steve2, I agree with you 100%
Believe me, I claim WILLFUL ignorance as well as a measure of selfishness wanting to live in paradise. There is blame to go around and around.
The reason I made my post is I don't think people who believed what was said in that 1969 article were/are necessarily stupid. Our natural intelligence was not fostered or rewarded. We were directed to be "sheep like" as the gold standard for faithfulness. And the pressure from family? INTENSE As I was reading that article my much older brother was being shunned and disinherited by the family simply for not getting baptized!
All that being said I am mad at myself for being too stubborn and lazy to research my own religion as an adult.

daringhart13,
Of course, a lot of us feel stupid for believing that lie but we were born to parents and grandparents who "inculcated/mentally regulated" our minds from birth. I and many others trusted our parents to have our best interests at heart. Besides, we have learned the effects that b.i.t.e. mind control has on people.
Something else to consider about that time: 1963 JFK was assassinated, The Vietnam War was raging and we were seeing the bloodbath play out in living color in magazines and television. By the end of the 60's Civil rights, Watts riots, Malcomb X, MLK and RFK ALL assassinated over and over again in front of our eyes in the news programs every night on TV. Add to that the HUGE growth in the borg which seemed to fulfill the prophesy that "ten men will take hold of the skirt of a Jew". It seemed to make sense at the time.
So no, I won't accept that I was that stupid. I was lied to.

I was 17 when that article came out so of course I remember it and the climate in the entire organization vividly.
To me, the issue is not so much that they were dead wrong (thus false prophets) as the CONSEQUENCES to those who were fed this spoiled spiritual food. We made life's most important decisions based on the belief that the world would POSITIVELY end in 6 years or less. Now take gullible adults with their impressionable children and imagine the dumb shit JW's did which to this day is negatively affecting our lives.
It's easy for younger dubs to pass it off as "old light" Honest older ones know better.

Female Perspective about WTS, marital relationship & control
by Muddy Waters indespite my user name, am female.
i was not born-in, began studying when i was around 20, am 50 damn years old now and have spent almost the last 30 years in that stupid religion.
but here are some observations, make of them what you will.

Muddy Waters,
Your observations can be helpful to those whose wives are still in.
I agree with your observations because I lived it. My first husband was Dfed for the second time and no longer pretended to be a JW. I was miserable trying to "save" our children from certain death from my loving God with what I saw as a terrible "Worldly influence" from their father. I was angry that he broke our JW wedding vows about a "threefold cord" with "Jehovah in our marriage" I'm embarrassed to say I threw tantrums too. For that and many other reasons the marriage ended.
Meanwhile, I find a polar opposite of my first husband in my new congo. He he's a respected elder, kind, honest, faithful, completely unselfish. We marry and attempt to be as perfect JWs as possible. That didn't last long and is a separate story. The point is we are now both out physically and mentally and are experiencing the same freedom as INDIVIDUALS as you and our marriage has been strengthened because of it. We do not always agree but when we don't, we don't pass moral judgement on the other or try to see what the Watchtower (yuck) has to say on the subject. Like you, we are FINALLY acting like adults.

I Haven't Missed a Meeting in Years!
by Oubliette ini recently ran into a jw i knew from a few years back.you know how it goes, a few pleasantries that always seem much more awkward than they really should (not for me, mind you--for him).and then the question, "so what congregation are you attending?
are you able to make the meetings?
"i'm thinking: do you always start conversations this way?so anyways, knowing full well the jw-mindset, i decided to have a bit of fun.furrowing my brow, i said, "that's an odd question!

Oub, That was classic! BA and I are laughing out loud just picturing that scenario. We love your first statement, "That's an odd question," JW's seldom realize how dippy they sound. :) -

Who leaves first, the husband or wife?
by snugglebunny inwhen it comes to a simple matter of no longer believing the teachings of jw's, it appears to me that it's more common for the husband to make the first move to leave the religion.

Hubby stopped attending before I but he was not mentally out. He carefully shared his doubts with me and helped me think. Yet I was the first to see the TTATT partly because I had more time to research.
I am much more emotional than he so when I became mentally out I wanted to immediately DA and shout it from the rooftop. He reigned me in kicking and screaming. He insisted that we do nothing to arouse suspicion in order to keep our freedom of speech with JWs.
