Cedars, well done on actually trying to inform people outside of the organization about things like this. I think in the UK, like the US, it is easy for the WTS to hide behind the word 'religion' and therefore get the authorities to keep their distance. Unless the WTS said something like, "If a wife is physically abused by her husband then she should pray about it and hope that things will get better in time, but should never seek to end the marriage", then I think there is very little that can be done other than to publicise the way the WTS publications have dealt with this issue over the years.
In my view this is another example of the organization's Pharisee-like thinking, effectively making the marriage certificate (the symbol) more important than the people in the marriage itself (the reality), or put another way "the sanctity of marriage" is more important than "the sanctity of the marriage partners' bodies". We all know what can happen when the symbol of something supercedes the thing that it represents, particularly when it comes to the lives of human beings. It would be extremely sad if even one JW woman with a physically abusive husband (JW or not) saw it as showing respect for "the sanctity of marriage" to continuing living with her spouse on account of an example of 'patience' and 'endurance' found in the pages of one of the publications. There is never any excuse for husbands to be violent towards their wives. Certainly those husbands who claim to be Christians "ought to be loving their wives as their own bodies" (Ephesians 5:28).
You know, I hope the members of the Writing Department who wrote on this subject didn't simply ask themselves, "Now what particular scripture(s) somewhere in the Bible can we find to fit this situation?" I think it would have been good if they had asked themselves something like, "Now, given that we are trying to promote the Christian way of doing things rather than the way of doing things under the old Mosaic law, and being aware of how the scriptures describe the kindly character of Jesus and his genuine concern was for helping the disadvantaged, if he were present with us right now, what do we honestly believe God's Son would advise as being the most important issue here?"

Do you think that we are in the last days?
by stuckinamovement indo you think that we are in the last days?
i really don't think we are in the last days.
i came to the conclusion that 1914 is false and is no more than another year in man's history, so hence we are not living in the last days prophesied by jesus.

"'And in the last days,' God says, 'I shall pour out some of my spirit upon every sort of flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy and your young men will see visions and your old men will dream dreams;'" (Acts 2:17; NWT)
Peter is applying these words to what was happening to those Christians at Pentecost during the last days of the Jewish system of things. That is why there is a sense of urgency in various letters to the early Christian community. Those letters were written to people living in the first century, so why would the writers be talking to them about some time period in the future that would not affect them? Why would Paul warn Timothy about "critical times hard to deal with" if those times would never touch his life?
"It must have been also with reference to the end of the Jewish system of things that Christ Jesus was spoken of as appearing and carrying on his activity 'at the end of the times' or 'at the end of these days.' (1Pe 1:20, 21; Heb 1:1, 2) This is confirmed by the words of Hebrews 9:26: 'But now he [Jesus] has manifested himself once for all time at the conclusion of the systems of things to put sin away through the sacrifice of himself.' "(Insight, Vol 2, "Last Days", 'Last Days of the Jewish System of Things', second paragraph) -

Tampering with the COUNTDOWN CLOCK of Armageddon
by Terry in1. charles taze russell was not a jehovah's witness (because judge rutherford had not invented the term as yet); he was a 2nd adventist (wannabe).. .
2. adventists were hung up on one idea that they could not let go of no matter how many times they were proved wrong: end times date-setting.. 3.pastor russell threw every gimmick he could cobble together into creating a personal theology for sale using books and magazines through his publishing house.
dispensation charts, pyramidology, claims of inside information (fds bullshit) created a fanbase of customers.. 4. the eventual prediction for the end of the world was 1914 since jesus had already returned.

After describing his humble position and view of himself to the readers of the Zion's Watch Tower in the 15 July 1906 issue under the heading "A Sketch of the Development of Present Truth" (on page 229), with such statements as "I claim nothing of superiority, nor supernatural power, dignity or authority; nor do I aspire to exalt myself in the estimation of my brethren of the household of faith" and "my position among men of the world and of the nominal church is certainly far from exalted", he goes on to tell them that he is "an index finger, as I have previously expressed it, to help you to trace for yourselves, on the sacred page, the wonderful plan of God" and "God's mouthpiece"!
As Terry pointed out, CTR was influenced by Second Adventism. He knew about people like William Miller (www.presenttruthmag.com/7dayadventist/1844/2.html) and the desire to engage in date setting and failure of predictions (www.presenttruthmag.com/7dayadventist/1844/3.html).
One wonders why the Second Adventists and CTR thought that it belonged to them "to get knowledge of the times or seasons which the Father has placed in his own jurisdiction" (Acts 1:7; NWT).

The world is passing away but He that does the will of God remains forever - 1Jo. 2:17
by mankkeli inthis was taken from the watchtower 1975, august 15. paragraphs 12&13.
12 resources and abilities that we might possess should be used to advance kingdom interests, rather than letting them serve as hindrances in the race for life.
for instance, if you have an extra house, could you sell it and use the money to enter the pioneer service instead of working hard to maintain both houses?

[An edited and expanded version. Changes in CAPITAL LETTERS.]
12 Resources and abilities that YOU might possess should be used to advance THE INTERESTS OF THE WTS, rather than letting them serve as THINGS TO CHEER YOU UP AND BOLSTER YOU SELF-ESTEEM. For instance, if you have an extra house, could you sell it and use the money to SIGN UP TO OUR LOCAL FULLTIME FREE-LABOUR CONTRACT? If you have retired or will soon retire from secular work, does your heart move you to use the increased freedom for SPENDING MORE TIME HELPING TO FIND MORE WTS FODDER? Even though your resources may be limited, how can they be used best in serving the WTS?
13 The objective should be to make material things serve US as needed, and not for YOU to ENJOY THEM. If YOU truly appreciate WTS values and put YOUR relationship with WTS above all else, it will help US to keep running the WTS. The world with its desires PECULIAR TO HUMAN BEINGS EVER SINCE THE YEAR DOT "is CONTINUING TO COME UP WITH YET MORE ENTERTAINING (EVEN HAPPIFYING) WAYS TO LIVE LIFE, but he that does the will of THE WTS remains forever TRAPPED IN A PREDICTABLE WAY OF LIFE." -

C.T. Russell and the Bible Students blessed and used by God?
by WontLeave inthere is no question that the first president of this corporation, c. t. russell, was used mightily by jehovah during the period when basic bible truths were being restored among gods true worshipers on earth.
we have great love for brother charles t. russell, for his works sake, and that we gladly acknowledge that the lord used him and greatly blessed his work - ka p239, jv p155, others (rutherford's speech announcing the adoption of the name jehovah's witnesses).
at their regular gatherings during the years 1870 to 1875, the religious thinking of these men underwent profound changes.

OPEN APPEAL TO THE BIBLE STUDENTS
With great respect, I would ask all current-day Bible Students who still hold to the teachings of Charles Taze Russell (CTR) to ask themselves this: "If any of CTR's teachings were shown to be based on error, would I allow loyalty and respect for him to prevent me from acknowleging that teaching as wrong, or would I for the sake of truth not only acknowledge the wrong teaching but refuse henceforth to promote it?" A similar question could be asked of JWs in relation to the Watch Tower Society. Another question I think good to ask oneself is: "Do I really have autonomy over discovering the truth where it relates to spiritual belief or do I still rely on, or even feel the need to hold to, particular beliefs as promoted by a person or group of persons?" Also: "Is my concern to 'save face', or to 'face the truth' and accept it even though it may be at odds with what I had been led to believe?"
It seems to me that not a few of the teachings of CTR are based on an error, which consequently would put various calculations of his out by 100 years. The error I'm talking about was an incorrect understanding of the number of years found at 1 Kings 6:1 where 480 years was believed to have been 580 years, based on a footnote in the Emphatic Diaglott referencing Acts 13:20. This has an effect on CTR's dating of the start of Christ's parousia (presence) in 1874. Once the error is corrected, it takes us to 1974 which is 58 years after his death. This means that Christ's parousia could not have begun in 1874 but rather in 1974, which would mean that he could not have been chosen as 'that servant' at the time of the Lord's inspection.
I wonder how many other teachings of CTR's are based on this error and should now be called into question by real truth seekers?

1 KINGS 6:1 AND THE EMPHATIC DIAGLOTT FOOTNOTE ON ACTS 13:20
"Now it came about in the four hundred and eightieth year after the sons of Israel came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the LORD." [1 Kings 6:1; NSAB]
"20. A difficulty occurs here [at Acts 13:20] which has very much puzzled Biblical chronologists. The date given here is at variance with the statement found at 1 Kings vi. 1. There have been many solutions offered, but only one which seems entirely satisfactory, i.e., that the text in 1 Kings vi. 1, has been corrupted, by substituting the Hebrew character daleth {4 [?]} for hay {5, [?]} which is very similar in form. This would make 580 years {instead of 480} from the exode [sic] to the building of the temple, and exactly agree with Paul's chronology." [Benjamin Wilson's Emphatic Diaglott (1864), footnote to Acts 13:20]
"Man's creation was placed in 4128 and sin's entrance in 4126 B.C.E. Such chronology followed an incorrect manuscript rendering of Acts 13:20 in The Emphatic Diaglott, which said that God gave Israel judges 'about four hundred fifty years, till Samuel the prophet.' A footnote stated that this was at variance with 1 Kings 6:1, where the Hebrew letter daleth (thought to represent the number 4) supposedly had been mistaken for the similar character he (5). Hence, it was suggested that 580 (not 480) years elapsed between Israel's exodus from Egypt and the time that Solomon began building Jehovah's temple. But the oldest manuscripts spell out all numbers. So a transcriber's visual error could not have occurred at 1 Kings 6:1, which gives this period correctly as 480 years. This harmonizes with a correct reading of Acts 13:20, which indicates that the period of 'about four hundred and fifty years' there mentioned preceded the era of the Judges. In 1943 the Watch Tower Society's book "The Truth Shall Make You Free" did away with the nonexistent extra 100 years in the period of the Judges and placed the end of 6,000 years of man's existence in the 1970's. It also fixed the beginning of Christ's presence, not in 1874, but in 1914 C.E." [Watch. 15 Aug 1974, "No Spiritual 'Energy Crisis' for Discreet Ones" (pages 506-509), Footnotes]

Dear Teary Oberon,
First the point of providing a list set out in such a way was simply to allow quick access to congregation information that is publicly available. Without a list set up in a similar way to this one would have to spend time doing searches on the Charity Commission's website. I believe that just as the previous list seemed useful to some people in looking at who might still be around in their old congregation(s) this list may also be of use to some in this way. If people wish to contact a particular congregation through its representatives in order to provide certain information and/or to ask questions, then should they not be allowed to do so as long as they are polite and use points of contact that have been provided by the congregation for the general public? You will notice that I did not provide from the Charity Commission any congregation's personal information as there is the matter of Crown copyright to consider.
With respect, please don't assume bad things of me. The motivation behind providing this and the previous list is certainly not for people to "firebomb, vandalize, harass and mail spam". I have no sympathy with people who wish to cause others nuisance. Unfortunately, as you know, this world is a mixture of good and bad people. Someone going into a shop that sells kitchen knives may well buy one from the store and harm other people with it, but does that make the store guilty of bad intent knowing that a few people might use their knives for evil purposes? I think that people have a right to easy access of information publicly available. If they wish to harm others on the basis of that information then they should most definitely be held accountable for their individual action(s), but I don't think the potential actions of a tiny minority should restrict the freedom of the majority - to do such would amount to 'nannying' or treating adults like children.
In conclusion, I would ask if most people visiting this site really have evil intent on their minds. Of course, if this list and/or the other list is considered by Simon, the moderators or even a large number of the members here to be a bad thing, I am quite happy for the relevant threads to be removed.
Kind regards

Where is Mr Gillies headed next? Could we being seeing him in a few years time moving to America to take up a position as a member of the GB? If and when and he gets the heavenly call, it certainly would be the ultimate accolade in a very busy career.
Any extra bits of information about Paul would be very welcome.

Most congregations of JWs in the UK have as their Governing Document what is known as The Model Constitution. Here is an interesting extract that shows who holds in trust all land and building belonging to such congregations.
CLAUSE 5 OF THE MEMORANDUM OF CONSTITUTION
5.1 THE KINGDOM HALL TRUST (or such other Body Corporate as the Congregation with the approval of the Society may from time to time appoint for that purpose by Congregation Decision) shall be the Custodian Trustee of the Congregation
5.2 ALL LAND and building belonging to the Congregation shall be vested in the Custodian Trustee on the Trusts which are set out in the First Schedule to this Memorandum
'the Society' is defined in clause 1 as:
The incorporated body known as Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania whose office is at The Ridgeway London NW7 1RN (Company Number F4273): Charity Registration Number 241623) in association with the incorporated body known as International Bible Students Association whose office is at the same address (Company Number 136726): Charity Registration Number 216647) (or such incorporated or unincorporated body as may be used by or succeed to the Society in respect of the organisation of Jehovah's Witnesses in Great Britain)

Note: Company Number F4273 (Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania), was closed as an overseas branch on 1 November 1999.
