Path and RHW certainly capture the feeling of how this got 'enforced' in the congregations.

i've seen this term used a lot (love-bombing) re: new jw studies.
the implication is that this is some kind of nefarious wt strategy, but, the more i think about, the less i agree.
at least, it's not an intentional strategy, i think, just something that happens that works to their advantage (getting new recruits in).. i grew up as a jw.

Also, xander, there are plenty of non-cynical "true believers" who probably are thinking something like 'my loving conduct will help them to recognize the Truth, even if I actually am more than a bit repelled by their personality and body odor."

Everything you're saying is true... but it's still love-bombing. After all, your average rank and file Moonie has similar thoughts.
Whether or not there is someone at an upper level intentionally directing the technique is an interesting but irrelevant question; a classic cult indoctrination technique is being practiced, perhaps with good intentions by the love-bomber.

do they "mystically manipulate"people joining them?.
im inclined to say they dont.. they are almost unique in this.. practically every cult ive joined, i could recite a litany of manipulation techniques applied to me during my joining process.. the dubs study with people, systematically, unemotionally.. noone else does this in my experience.. people who join the dubs join under "intellectual conviction".. do you agree with this view or not??.
im most curious to hear opinions on this.
RF, your question seems more than adequately answered. Do you agree?

Re: topic - All classic cult techniques are used, albeit in somewhat milder forms. So, the WS isn't even particularly good at being a cult.

Xenu, clearly an expert on brainwashing.

Certainly they manipulate recruits. They isolate from friends and family by planting suspicion of Satanic influence, they "love bomb" at meetings and studies, they seek early on to control information by warning of "apostate" literature, they seek to control time by studying as often as possible and encouraging association and meeting attendance, their literature manipulates with lies and half truths, they target people (by the nature of their preaching work) at transitional/stressful periods - thye use just about ALL of the classic cult indoctrination techniques.
Was this a serious question?

the past few weeks i have been comnunicating with jw's in my area who attend kh meetings physically but not mentally.
they are "closet apostates" or "double agents".
some are planning to leave the area altogether to avoid the hassles of being shunned.. according to one of these "closet apostates", he believes that 30% if not more of the members in his congregation would leave if it were not for the shunning.
DFing is most effective, and most unfair, with those"raised in the Truth". A lot of kids go through a phase somewhere between 13 & 16, where they just want to belong and getting baptized is a great way to belong. And then the trap is sprung. I believe this amounts to child abuse, and reluctantly wonder if the State does not have a role here - perhaps preventing baptism of minors? Worth discussing; it seems like a weak point in the Society's legal armor. (the helmet of Litigation, feet clad with Plausible Deniability, the breastplate of Secrecy...)

like many, for years i understood the generation mentioned in matthew 24:34 to be an actual chronological generation that actually saw the events of 1914. this would mean that to be in a position to see and understand the events of 1914, someone would have to be at least 10 years old, and to be someone who actually fought in the great war, say 17 or 18 years old.
this generation has passed away, as clearly brought home with the recent death of the british queen mother who was born at the beginning of the 20th century.. whilst i understand the so called change of thought of a few years back that now makes this generation a contemporary rather than a chronological one, i cannot see how the guarantee that heaven and earth will pass away but my words will not pass away sits with a much vaguer contemporary one.
if it is not possible to clearly define this generation, then this guarantee makes no sense.. has anyone heard of any new spins on the guarantee aspect, say from cos, dos, bethelites, etc, as the official lines have been particularly vague on this point?
Since the definition of generation is now elastic, the guarantee is now elastic. Plainly, the WS felt a great deal of pressure building up because they had been trumpeting the guarantee for 70 years or so - always, btw, explaining 'generation' in such a way as to create urgency.
This topic is dear to my heart, because the 1995 change in generation is what finally got me thinking that the WS might be full of crap.
