hhmm, well in the UK it's lots of alcohol... North America it's prescription anxiety medication. meh, we're all drugged, lol.

before the usual suspects start reaching for the pich-forks and forming a mob, i invite you to actually read and consider this, not just leap to conclusions.. http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/americas/united-states/130607/7-graphs-america-overrated-nsa-prism-privacy.
why do i care?
it seems the people being screwed the most are also the most visciferous defenders of the status quo which sees them being severely disadvantaged.. maternity leave?

i mean, it's so utterly ****ed up, it's unbelievable.. just think about the nitty gritty of it:.
people that they love & care for who don't share their religion deserve to be killed, left without a grave & eaten by wild animals.
one day, this will happen & they'll be surrounded by billion upon billion of decaying, rotting corpses.
I don't think I ever REALLY believed it, not REALLY.

<--- Canadian
<--- Lives in North Yorkshire half the time.
Sick to death of people in UK thinking that because I'm Canadian I hate the U.S.... I don't. I like America just fine.
My default position is to side with Britain... sorry ... just the way it is for me... but on the other hand... stfu about America!
My observations...
'Americans are fat'... oh, not said by the fatties (and there's quite a few).
'Americans are stupid morons that go to church'... not said by those going to church on Sunday.
'Americans don't travel'... well, yeah, they don't as much when it costs way, way more than 60GBP to get to a whole different culture. Consider yourselves fortunate that way. When I was at an outdoor ice rink in London... how people skated... was so very sad. Of course I would think that, wouldn't I? Do I think that anybody that can't ice skate is an absolute moron.... no, it's a result of culture based on geography.
... etc...
I will say this.. I think there's a cultural difference at play here. The English do lots of critisizing their own country in a way that Americans may not understand at first glance... it would seem 'unpatriotic' to them.
Finally, if I could speak Norwegian I know where I'd be.
jw discourage higher education through conventions magazine etc.
in kindom ministry 2011 july they considered higher education as date, and use alcohol or drugs.
however if you look at the front page of the brochure "jehovah's witnesseswho are they?
I remember the early 90's there was a WT on it being ok to get some higher education... this was a turnaround from everything I'd been told when I was in school. I was told to just get a higher education 'out of my head'. They tightened up on that again soon after as I recall. Maybe a bit of an experiment.. we need professionals for bethel, etc... nope, people get to a university campus and tell us to piss off. Yeah, flip flop.
after lurking for 7 and half years (is that a record?!
) its time for me to say hello.. so who am i, and whats my story?.
im a born in jw, with all my siblings, mother, wife and children in.
7.5 yrs lurking is quite some time, lol. I graduated high school in '89... and I remember the whole time being told repeatedly that it's very doubtful I'd graduate high school. 'What if armeggedon came tomorrow... or this weekend?' was very common speech. I wonder if publishers nowadays realize / remember that. Welcome!
does anyone find it odd that it seems there's less of a vocal apostate movement for scientology and mormons.
i'm getting this from google - i can't seem to find any majour forums like this one, or websites that are regularly updated exposing doctrines etc.. there is stuff out there, but from my search at least it doesn't seem to be as much as jw's.. strange considering mormons have 13 mill (?).
scientologists 'claim' 8 mill.. .
Maybe those groups aren't as painful to be in, or as painful to leave?
Makes it real just how bad we had it(?).
is it possible that someone has a jw friend who's very active in the congregation, knows you don't believe it anymore, and is still your friend?
i'm at the point where word is getting out that i'm not going to meetings anymore, and friends ask me if they'll be seeing me at the ca and i tell them i'm not going.
they want to know why, and what they can do to encourage me.
Sorry, Julia, not gonna work. In my experience you end up making all new friends. If you've left recently then I realize this is hard to visualize. It snowballs faster than you might think.
All my JW friends are ex-JW.. and they are some of my favourite people in the world. One of them looked me up when he decided to leave years later... I basically ignored them while they went to the KH.
You have to sacrifice your soul far too much to be their friend whilst they are still in... speaking for myself.. I'm just not willing.
Like, what? You're going to be sitting around with some old 'friend' having a nice visit when she quotes 1Cor 15:33 at you? You're then going to dive and tackle her while you scream 'You shut your mouth whore!' ... I mean, honestly... is this how you want to live your life?
an hour or two ago, i was reading a topic on this forum that welcomed new elders to jwn.
there was some criticism aimed at the op and i understand that elders shouldn't be singled out as special.
one poster said he/she hates all elders.
@Athanasius:
Thank you for setting an example of somebody that moved from being an 'elder' to a responsible adult.
What you've described doesn't sound easy in the slightest.... which is why it's so respectable.
i've always been told that i have a very good personality, that i'm humorous, etc.. one elder called me over and said that i was "smiling too much".
the other elders talked to the elder who counseled me and he came back to say that i should be like i was .
.
Lots of stuff. But yeah, like Minimus, when we first started studying at the age of 13 I was told repeatedly by the MS studying with our family that people thought that I 'liked to fool around too much'.
I also remember my mom being irritated with people that seemed to not like that I laughed in the KH after meetings (not laughing at people... just enjoying my life).
I was supposed to be miserable and I just didn't seem to get it! Well, they did wear me down and make me miserable in the medium run.
But now I'm out and free.. and smiling!
Suck it sados!

something i have struggled with over the last few years, do i have a responsibility as an "apostate" to warn/extract others from the wtbts?.
one part of me says "damn right you do", its a frikken cult.
how would you feel about someone who failed to warn you about a dangerous organization, whether its a religion or something else.. the other part of me says "leave it alone".
'When the student's ready... the teacher appears'.
Why rush them?
... and when they do get to this point they're surely going to come on this site and be dazzled by my hypnotic logic.
Responsibility fullfilled.
