RAF - I was married for almost 26 years to a Spaniard from Mallorca. So I speak that Catalunyan dialect well when it comes to mundane matters of running a household, cooking, asking about the weather, a person's health, etc. Nothing terribly broadening.
I speak some Castillian Spanish, having taken classes in college, but I am MUCH better at reading it and understanding the spoken word. I want to improve upon my oral and writing skills, so, like Katie, I plan to go away to immerse myself either in Spain or Mexico someday. (Mexico is less expensive, but Spain is so much closer to all the REST of Europe!!:D !!)
After taking French in both junior and senior high school, I immersed myself in French for six months in Lausanne, Switzerland when I was 19 years old and then worked 10 years for Renault USA. When I decided to finally go to college after my kids were older, I decided life is too short to do something I don't absolutely love (the death of my mother and my bout with breast cancer influenced this philosophy) -- so I went for a degree in French.
I am studying to become a French teacher -- I have loved French and spoken it for almost 40 years now -- off and on, as necessary. I almost double majored in Spanish, but decided that if I had Spanish on my resume I most likely would NOT get a position teaching FRENCH (my first love), but rather would be offered Spanish teaching jobs. So my major is French and my minor is history and I shall perfect my Spanish on my own time and unbeknownst to my future employers.
I love languages and took two years of German in High School, but I can only remember very rudimentary phrases. "Wo is der Rathaus?" "Es tut mir leid." "Apfelkuchen" ;0
And I know how to say "Christmas" and "I love you" in Danish. I'm a Christmas baby and my Grandfather was Danish.
How about you? -

by DeusMauzzim in"... since you were raised in the truth.
we respect your decision to break your promise and walk away, but don't slander us by talking about [child abuse / ngo / malawi / insert here].
how would you respond to this?.

"I love you, too, Mom and Dad, but I am VERY concerned for your eternal welfare, because I am certain that you have been duped. I wish you would make sure of the things I am trying to share with you, so that you can make an INFORMED decision about your faith."
(Tried my best to make it sound reassuringly familiar while espousing toying with apostasy -- in their eyes, of course.) -

Anyone seen the Secret?
by Satans little helper insomeone lent me the dvd of the secret over the weekend.
we watched it last night and i wondered what everyone thought of it?
i thought that it was very "evangelical" and alot like the jw's - large on promise and small on content.

I loved it, but I must agree that it is pretty much another take on positive thinking.
While I noted that some on the "panel" seemed to espouse Christian values, I agree with sammieswife that I noted NO parallel at all with JWism. On the contrary, I feel the JW religion is always telling you to put off enjoyment today for a post-Armageddon "harvest." 'The Secret' maintains that you don't have to wait for your personal paradise, you can create it here with powerful visualization, positive thoughts, and working in harmony with your goals (Hmmmm...well may that "working in harmony" bit was somewhat Dubby).
I DO believe that gratitude as an attitude and visualizing joy make for a happier existence all around.
I have employed the techniques and have had all sorts of "impossible" things come true for me since last November when I first viewed it.
Since you attracted the DVD to you, perhaps you've been wanting its message on some level? Perhaps play it again and reflect on what parts of it resonated most with you?
Wishing you the best,

So who's having therapy then?
by sweet pea ini have made an appointment to see a therapist who has been highly recommended (i don't think i would ahve taken that step, had it not been for the recommendation and that this therapist is strongly involved with a church so probably has a pretty good idea about the issues involved with cults and the like).
are any of you currently in therapy, have had it or are about to have it?
for those that have, has it helped?

sweet pea --
I had therapy for a while post-escape from JWism, post-mother's death, post-divorce after almost 26 years of marriage. The diagnosis/reason for therapy for all three was "grief and loss" counseling.
The time you spent in the WT probably feels like a loss to you. And you grieve your lost contacts, so I'd guess counseling will help you. It did me.
It also helped me face my deepest fears and to figure out my almost-automatic--based on deeply held or deeply "inculcated" beliefs--patterns of self-blame and care-taking responses. Now, when I start to inappropriately 'caretake" -- I recognize it, step back, and make a conscious decision about whether or not I really want and/or need to be doing that. Most often, I can let the others in my life run their own lives, which is very liberating and, restful, actually.
I hope you find your therapy sessions to be at least as helpful to you as mine were to me.

P.S. The sooner you are willing to go past the surface talking and get to FEELING the sooner you will have results and the less time and money you will spend. But I found that's easier said than done. Good Luck! -

Cellphone ringtones
by MadTiger inwhat type of ringtone do you use?
do you go with the normal rings that are already on the phone, like i do?
or do you go with snippets of your favorite songs instead, like many people?
-
outnfree
I have T-Mobile with the my Faves, and each of my Faves plus one other person have a distinctive ringtone so that I know who it is before I pick up the phone. I've chosen both the my Faves icons and the ringtones to match the personaities/interests of my friends and family members.
This system works for me. This is especially helpful to me for the kids' calls -- calls I will generally pick up at anytime, in case it's an emergency. For example, with my eldest daughter now in Europe, if I hear her ringtone, I jump to answer it, knowing it's important.
If I'm at work and the regular ringtone plays, I can decide whether or not the call even bears investigating, depending upon what I am doing.

(((((((Terry)))))))
I am so glad you posted, and no need--at all!--to apologize for the timing. It is good to know you are out there, getting through your sorrow day by day, happy memories and poignant ones alike. I was not able to express my condolences to you before this -- I hadn't your address and others apparently cannot read my PMs because I am not using a PC (although I can read theirs), so I couldn't PM anyone to ask for it.
Please know that I've been sending healing thoughts and will continue to do so. I cannot even fathom a loss such as yours.
I wish you the strength and the healing necessary to accomplish your plan and more...
Love,
out
