Since Christmas can be representative of many holiday traditions; and I think Jesus birth may be the newest addition. The basic underlining is about reciprocity and clan gathering. Most of our Christmas celebrations derive from Germanic tradition; thus the yule log tree decoration lights huge feast (slaughter of the animals --- also known as culling the herd) piles a bounty of protein for the rest of the winter. Let's face it the Germans know how to do winter!
My favorite parts of Christmas is the sharing of good times and good food.

Winning the lottery, would it really change your life?
by JH inimagine that you won a couple of million $, would this have a huge bearing on you or would you just make slight ajustments to your life?.
i'd be the same person, but with more resources, that's all !!!!.
i'd be more "me" and wouldn't change into someone else because i became rich.. how about you?

Very funny ... making us dream the impossible dream, to have beauqueys of cash to pay off our bills and then take our friends travelling. Also visit the people I love most, start a school of-no- bullshit in a building minus aspestos tile. And hire great teachers, buy them houses and pay them well,,, I guess set up some foundation and trust to keep the school progressing, loads of field trips to NASA. Teach young kids about Enlightenment philosophers (de Montesquie) and maybe have stoies about a young Charles Darwin in England and the people who influenced him. I would also teach young children about architecture beginning with pyramids in Africa ...heck I'd take them to North east Africa and study the early civilizations which even the Egyptians may have been influenced by. WOW I'd need to win a ton of money. Dream on Panda.

Black History Month? Is it separation or just realistic?
by under74 inso i got to thinking after seeing 60 minutes this last week.
morgan freeman said black history month is "ridiculous" and pointed out that it keeps african-americans seperated from other americans.
i guess my thinking is that the school text books haven't really changed since i was in school.

Every celebration and celebration symbol derives from some earlier ancestors celebration (often called pagan ). The symbols we use: christmas tree, lights,Santa (you better be good) are traditions taken mainly from Germany by Queen Victoria in order to honor her German husband Prince Albert.
The date for Christmas marked the astronomical occaision of the days getting longer (so the god Tammuz was rising again) I'm thinking that would be a Persian origin. So when Christians decided that the birth of the Sun should become the birth of God's son, well, heck, Saturnalia was as good as any date (Dec.25th) and people were already used to this date for winter celebrations.
Basically we are continuing the ancient holidays of seasonal changes. (so you don't have to be a Christian to celebrate Christmas) It's fun , and if this holiday makes people act nicer even for awhile I say bring Christmas on we need some bright days.

I also saw Morgan Freeman on 60 minutes and agree with his very reasonable statement that labels may cause divisions. In the US we have way too many fplks who make a living on creating the black/white divide. Black history month does not represent Black history it only represents Black separate from White, so we encourage the "Other" mentallity .
I taught my students that there is one race, the human race ... and we had great conversations (and debates).

Do you know where the first person you had sex with, lives now?
by free2beme ini was actually baptized in my early 20's, so i spent some time as a teen and early twenties doing things that were not witness-like.
one of those things was sex out of marriage and to be honest, i have no regrets.
i have wondered though sometimes, where is that person i shared such a landmark moment with in life.

Please don't hate me for this BUT I have always considered violence an essential component in human evolution. If you didn't get angry and "do something about it" our species would have died out. And our selfish genes require us to puff up and growl. I never saw a KH fight, and yah'll are having all the fun.
