Who is keeping watch over my soul, that I should be submissive to him?

I'll answer your question with a question. Given the fact that there are thousands of Christian denominations out there, how could anyone ever truly know? It seems that the burden is on the "high command" to clear all of this confusion up.

though he must later have revised his misunderstanding, because he seemed to expect to die before Christ returned
tec - now that is an interesting thought that I hadn't considered. Do you perhaps know which bible verses speak to that changed view?

Paul is speaking of an entirely different point in the verse Tootired quoted... he was not advocating people leave their spouses.
I never said he did! This quote just shows that following this unsustainable commitment that Jesus wanted of his followers was of far greater importance than having a "normal" family. So what are the side effects of this? I'll let you fill in the blanks.

loz - I don't see how it makes a dimes worth of difference. Jesus disciples today are expected to live their lives the same as Jesus disciples did then. Everything Jesus and his disciples said is always relevant and in context when discussing any aspect of Christianity.

Here is the apostle Pauls words on this too.
29 Moreover, this I say, brothers, the time left is reduced. Henceforth let those who have wives be as though they had none, 30 and also those who weep be as those who do not weep, and those who rejoice as those who do not rejoice, and those who buy as those not possessing, 31 and those making use of the world as those not using it to the full; for the scene of this world is changing. - 1 Cor 7:29-31

there is no evidence of a wife or children left without support.
My question is; if this is what Jesus wanted of future followers, why would he not provide more information on how those disciples worked those very important issues out? I mean that kind of decision is arguably a bigger one than getting married. The lack of detail that would help one make a rational choice just creates so much confusion. Perhaps this is by design, so that only a few make it through the narrow gate.

So we do not know the details, and we don't know that any woman or child was left to fend for themselves without support. I imagine that in those days, women were pretty good at tending the business of the families... especially if a husband must travel (for trade or for sea faring things or for war).
tec - How is this possible that you do not know all the details? I thought you had a direct link with the high command; you yourself stated in other threads that Jesus talks to you, why don't you just ask him? Then we can have this settled in no time.
cofty - I couldn't agree with you more. There are so many details and issues with just following the command at Matt 6:33 that the bible is uterly silent on. In so many ways it's the irresponsible thing to do. Case in point; the pioneering chickens that WTS have created over the decades are coming home to roost now. All of these baby boomers with no retirement savings; it's a disaster of epoch proportions that is coming to life right now. All of this and yet they are still holding fast to the approach of no education etc.

haven't officially walked away from the cult over a year ago (had been trying to apply a slow fade over a number of years) and now being able to think clearly, i can truly say that organized religion is the epitome of man's arrogance and ignorance.

BM - I enjoyed your post. I've recently come to this realization myself; the idea that God in his infinite power would create a system where he would micromanage our lives and view and judge every private action and thought is repulsive to me. The world thoroughly rejected the idea of the Stalinistic style of goverment/tyranny (excluding uber-liberals of course) of controlling everyones lives. How is what the bible presents as what God expects of us, and wants to be involved in our lives any different? So much for free will!
Hitchins put it well, when he classified this whole idea as a "celestial dictatorship". Do a seach for some of his debates on youtube, they are very eye opening.

I guess I'm in a particularly morose mood today
by wha happened? inbut i guess i finaly had it at the office with religion.
(there are two dubs and everyone else just throws in comments).
i guess living the life of a dub for a number of years took a lot of the belief out of me.. i think what threw me the most is when i hear people saying that god is like a parent, a father watching over his children.

wha happened - I'd love to buy you a beer or four and talk about it. I think that would make both us feel better
Cheers!
