Hi Big Jim,
Thanks a lot for the list of quotes--they're great! I'm printing them out and sharing them.

Sci-Fi Fans Only: A.I.
by Maximus ini hear tell there are some aficionados out there.. as a young man i secretly loved ray bradbury, isaac asimov, l. sprague decamp, poul anderson, arthur c. clarke and others.
loved brian aldiss' "super-toys last all summer.".
when the movie "2001: a space odyssey" premiered, i sneaked into a theater all by myself, and was blown away.

Hi again Truwoman,
I just posted to your thread about the WT magazine.
Very good review! There are many parallels to the Bible's view of humans, as you allude to. One of them is the failure of humans to obtain God's love. Being expelled after one sin into death and dismay for endless generations. How dismal.
The movie definitely had dismal overtones, but the kind that make you think.

R&F at fault for Armaggedon delay
by truman inwell, another issue of the wt came today, aug 15,2001. and again it has some statements which piqued my ire, so i thought i would share a couple.. on pg.28, paragraph 14, in the study article titled 'do not give up in doing what is fine'is the following:.
"remember too, that 'jehovah is not slow respecting his promise, as some people consider slowness, but he is patient with you because he does not desire any to be destroyed, but desires all to attain to repentance.
' (2 peter3:9) notice, god is 'patient with you'--members of the christian congregation.

Thanks Tru-woman,
"and the hits just keep on comin'. . ."
But they have to keep having fresh reasons why 'the end' has not materialized--why not blame the R&F?
Thanks for apprising us!

Fighting Words (formerly "Biga Peula")
by GinnyTosken inthis comes from they have a word for it: a lighthearted lexicon of untranslatable words & phrases by howard rheingold.. ginny.
biga peula (kiriwina, new guinea).
potentially disruptive, unredeemable true statements.

Hi Ginny,
Interesting info. When reading about the hard words, I thought a milder form of it exists in the U.S. in the old saying "Let sleeping dogs lie." Everyone knows about it, but let it go. Maybe also related is 'let bygones be bygones.'

Hi all,
I went to see "A.I." yesterday and was very surprised by it. It was very thought-provoking (the best kind of fiction).
Some salient points and comparisons for me:
1. The line about "didn't God create Adam to love him?" to justify creating a robot to love humans.
2. The futility of the pleading David did before the Blue Fairy. It seemed so similar to the prayers people offer endlessly to God.
3. The "bloodthirsty" humans at the Flesh Fairs were similar in fanatacism to religious zealots.
Twice I thought the movie was ending and yet it went on. I really enjoyed it. The robots at the end were so benevolent too. It was great.
But there was so much more to consider about the movie. It was a warning about ecology, morality, ethics, etc.
Thanks for the recommendation, Maximus.

Gems from August 2001 KM
by comment inwhat i loved about the majority of these quotes are the implications that an orthodox reader would be oblivious to.. you are "a theatrical spectacle"!
paragraph 5: "when you encounter opposition or think that your ministry is not getting results, remember that you are the center of universal attention.".
(but of course, don't forget psalm 8:4, in case you ever think you have any importance outside of going in field service.).

Comment,
Thanks for the summary of the August WT and their 'timely reminders' of good uses of dubs' time to prevent them from enjoying their vacations too much.
I've not read one word, I think, of the WT and Awake since 3/01. It's due to FEAR that I'll fall down the rabbit hole again and not emerge for another 28 years.
But I enjoy knowing what new 'spiritual gems' of endoctrination they have for their prisoners.

(FAQ WT site) Do you shun former members?
by D wiltshire inhere's some thing right from the official jw site under fequently asked questions.. do you shun former members?.
those who simply cease to be involved in the faith are not shunned.
in compliance with the scriptures, however, members can be expelled for serious unchristian conduct, such as stealing, drunkenness, or adultery, if they do not repent and cease such actions.

Seeker and Waiting,
Good points on the legalism in the WT FAQ.
I couldn't help but think of Clinton's infamous "it depends on what your definition of 'is' is."
To speak with the WTS one would have to have a definition of every term they use. E.g., 'sever family ties': biological or social? Former members: df'd, da'd, inactive?
Actually, didn't they write that themselves? So, it was crafted to avoid telling the whole truth.

Ad hominem
by philo inwhy do we sometimes attack people rather than ideas?.
we lack the mental reach to chase an argument further, or we just can't be bothered to, the issue clouds over, we begin to realise the limits of our capacity, and all we can see clearly is the person who brought us to this unpleasant place: so we lash out at them, our 'opponent'.. ideas are difficult and people seem easy.
the truth is that people are much more difficult, and when we attack them, it is not usually with understanding, rarely does it advance the debate.

Very good thread, Philo. It's good to have these ideas to counterbalance the anger and hurtful comments we can sometimes make.
Amazing, thanks for the sympathetic view of folks who have had decades of that tack. And also, JWs are intolerant of other viewpoints, so it takes a bit to cultivate a tolerant viewpoint.
Maximus, very good points. People who are irate are hurting. That's a good thing to remember.
I just love this group for the most part and it's a good stimulus to me.
Thanks to all for their participation.

Why Are You Here?
by larc inthe question, "why are you here?
" is simple enough, and your answer may be straightforward.
however, when i asked that of myself, i find that my answer is pretty complicated.

LauraLisa,
Your post made me laugh out loud! I hope you stay here a while, you have a lot to add.
I loved your synopsis of jw life, and then added you didn't actually DO all of that, but gave good comments! LOL!
Thanks for the intro and the laughs,
Pat
