  i think she is a hypocrite and i bet she sells her invites to fornicators, or does she ask them if they are having sex before marrige, before she takes their money?.

  i was never like this when i was a jw, it's even more disturbing that she is going to ask her elders what to do.

  Obviously, most of you believe that this woman was wrong to deny this couple service.

  Are there any acceptable reasons for denying someone service?

  Yes of course there are. A good rule of thumb is the "What" Vs " Who".

  For example you can refuse service based on WHAT someone is wearing. No shoes ? no service ? for EVERYBODY. But what if you only refuse service for black folks without shoes? Then this would be unacceptable because you are denying service based on WHO it is. Get the point?

  Again, when you have a customer facing business, you are not afforded any personal liberties, because your business IS NOT a person. Your business is an entity that serves the public. An entity has no personal views.

  If you own a business that makes cakes for example and you are a JW, and you don't want to bake for a gay person, you don't need to bake the cake, but your BUSINESS does. So if you have another employee that is ok with this, you must have this employee provide the service.

  If she was just an employee of the shop it might be a different situation, but as the business owner, shouldn't she have the choice of what kind of materials she wants to print, no matter what her reason is?

  Why are you using a strawman fallacy on this? That is not what happened. Certainly a business owner can determine which types of products/services can be offered or sold, but that does not mean that he/she can discriminate on who to sell those same products and services to.

  Don't confuse personal liberties with the obligations of a customer facing business. This woman has all the rights to refuse to bake a cake to anybody in her own private life, but DOES NOT have the right to refuse to handle business as usual to someone based on who they are. This is the difference.

  The do not call list

  i have posted before about my experience trying to get on the "do not call" list.

  despite repeated requests, a phone call to the hall and mailing a letter, and then giving a copy to a jw, they just keep coming by.

  i was going to put up a no soliciting sign, then i can call the police on them, but my husband doesn't want me to do it.. so, i decided if they come back i would have some fun.

  But come on, if they have a do not call list they should respect it, otherwise why have it in the first place?

  You made me feel sorry for the guy that came to your door first. It's probably not his fault. What usually happens in this case, is that indeed there is a note on the territory card that says "Don't visit this person".

  But when a group goes out in a car, often there is one territory card and everybody pitches in, so the group leader will tell everybody " you do from house x to house x" and then report back with your notes. So when they go to your door, they don't have the territory card.

  The group leader must have realized it and ran to the house but didn't get there in time.

  Apparently WT and JWs do not "trust in Jehovah's™ protection" as much as they claim to.

  It's a great point. I mean wasn't there a recent reference to how Jehovah protects his people? Time to put your money where your mouth is. Send the security guards away and pray that Jehoober puts two angels at the door.

  Human Rights -ignored often, not far reaching enough, more than often.

  human rights are clearly laid out in a number of places, and are upheld by legislation in many nations, and yet they are ignored, or when they are invoked, do not go far enough.. this is a sad state of affairs in the 21st century.. human rights are simply trodden in to the ground where we have war, where we have totalitarian regimes, and where we have ignorant clerics who rule.. even in enlightened countries that broadly accept the principles of human rights, they often are not given the priority they should receive.. take freedom of religion for example, this right should enshrine the right to freedom from religion.

  the fact that we in the u.k, canada the u.s.a, europe etc etc are unable to really be free of the wt/jw religion if we wish to choose to do so shows this right is unenforceable at present.. the same with the right to family life, the jw/wt cult is allowed to ride roughshod over this basic human right.. it is time their power, and the power of religion in general, was reigned in, and they be made to respect human rights fully..

  The fact that we in the U.K, Canada the U.S.A, Europe etc etc are unable to really be free of the WT/JW religion if we wish to choose to do so shows this right is unenforceable at present.

  How are you not free? The freedom in this case is the ability to leave the religious group of your own volition. The rest of the members who stay behind are also free to decide they don't want to talk to you. Even if this is imposed on them, they agree to it, otherwise they too have the freedom to leave if they wish.

  We have never been as free from relgion in human history as we are today - even if it's still not perfect.

  we create a brochure and printing, so we can send to the maximum of congregations in portugal.

  some individuals were also covered in this campaign.. the title of the pamphlet is: "when will the kingdom arrive?".

  What a pathetic comment from Villagegirl.

  About 210 million people speak Portuguese and it is the 6th most spoken language in the world. To refere to it as "Spanish" makes me believe you cannot read English VG, as the op clearly states that they are in Portugal

  Lol, don't be too hard on Village girl. She must be from the US, where people are oh-so-aware of cultural differences.

  I understand now. I obviously missed that detail. They didn't actually buy a KH, but a piece of land. Disgraceful!

  Since the property has several trustees, it means that the other elders are in on the deal as well, since they had to agree on the sale.

  What am i missing in this story? I'm not quite getting the point here. So the congregation bought the hall for 265K. Then an elder, or a body of elders sold it to themselves for 110K. Are the people in the video trying to make the point that the 265K was never actually paid for the property? Because if it was, i don't see a scam here.

  To make analogy, let's say i want to buy a house for $265K. I ask my family to please lend me the money, which they do. So i buy the house for $265K, then a year later i sell the house to myself for $110K without them knowing. How did I make any money here? The previous owner kept the $265K and now i actually owe a least a part of the 110K.

  Are they implying that initially, the elders collected $265K, but payed less and pocketed the rest? I could see a scam there, but that's not what they are saying...

  You can't have the same expections for a multinational huge charitable organization, that you have for a local small one.

  An organization like the Red Cross has a large overhead. Once you are that big, you need a proper structure in place. They need to be run like a real company, because they really are one, and that costs a lot of money, so if at the end of they day 20 - 30 % of the revenue actually goes to helping others, it's still reasonable. It doesn't seem fair, but that's the cost of having an organization who can mobilize things in a worldwide scale.

  When you donate to the local corner church, your should expect a higher percentage of monies to be used to help others. Perhaps the local church only needs 2 people and a van to go help others; they probably don't need much structure aside from their goodwill, so their expenses are minimum.
