  What is the current JW stance on blood - for nursing assignment..

  hi, i'm an ex-jw, i left about 10 years ago, and my memory is getting blurry on some jw detail these days.

  sorry i'm sure there are stacks of discussions on blood already but i don't have too much time for reading through hundreds of pages.

  i'm a nursing student and our topic for the week is blood.

  The JW's would be hard pressed to make their stance sound anything but what it is, totally nonsense, if they were quizzed on it by someone knowledgable, like our very own JWfacts above. Most could not even explain what the doctrine now is, let alone justify it from scripture.

  They have never been presented with the clear reasoning on the doctrine as presented by JWFacts.com, and so none of them are able to make an informed decision on a religious basis ! Of course there is no medical reason why blood should not be used as a last resort at least.

  The Last Days and the Bible's Responsibility to Prove Itself

  according to the watchtower's interpretation of the bible, we live in a time of unprecedented importance.

  the current system is likely to end in our lifetime, and as the end draws closer the need to for the world to accept the bible becomes more urgent.. we are also in a unique time in that billions of people have the risk of eternal destruction upon death.

  as i understand it, the billions who have and will die before armageddon will get an 'auto-resurrection' after armageddon (save a few in god's bad books) but those who die at armageddon are gone forever.

  At the very least you would expect that the Bible, if from God, would not get important scientific facts WRONG.

  For example, "the circle of the earth" has been mentioned, the Hebrew word translated "circle" has the concept of a flat circular plate, like the one on the back of the turtles in old illustrations of early belief, there was a perfectly servicable Hebrew word at the time for "sphere".

  Why did the writer not use that word ? he obviously had no concept that the Earth was a sphere.

  The dimensions of the "molten sea" copper basin that stood in the courtyard of the Temple are given, they show that the writer did not know the correct value of Pi, to work out the circumference.

  And this stuff is supposed to be inspired by the "Great Mathematician" Jehovah ?

  The Bible contains not ONE thing that the writers could not have known, so why should we think our lives depend upon it ?

  Phone call from the local JWs this evening...

  gosh i wish i was better at having religious discussions with jws.

  this evening, as i am at home trying to relax, i get a phone call from the local jws who are evidently sitting in their kh dialing out.. i got this man who starts off by asking me if he can ask me a question.

  "okaaaaay..." i say slowly.... "do you think..." he starts... and then stops... obviously losing his place in his pre-prepared sermon....

  Well done Jim ! I think it is good when dealing with them not to come over too slick and knowledgeable. I know when I was an active Dub people that seemed ready and prepared to do combat with me made me uneasy.

  I think the lady and her male friend are more likely to research something that you said, in an effort to prove you wrong, because you didn't come over as the know-all smart-ass.

  However badly we seem to do to ourselves in these situations, and I always think afterwards "I wish I had said so and so", the point is that we know what they know, and then we know a hell of a lot more !

  Telephone "Witnessing" has not really caught on here in the U.K as until recent times even local calls cost money, but now most contracts include free local calls to some degree it will probably become more common, especially with gas costing us $9 a gallon !

  Lets give a big hooray, for mankind

  i know that throughout history mankind has made a lot of big mistakes and caused a lot of the suffering that has befallen earth.. let us not forget about the enormous benefits science and our brilliant minds have achieved during the last few hundred years with regard to health, prosperity and welfare that has happened, amazing benefits have happened to longevity and disease prevention have occured in a realitively short period of time.

  the future does look rosey.. alas, but for religions they are built on societies that always looked to external forces for our deliverence, we do not need need these ideas anymore.. countries and peoples that look to these ideas are misguided, mankind has all the answers and inteligence to sort them out on their own, no higher power required.. let's have a big round of applause for humankind, we sure don't get enough praise for the things we have achieved.. we are only a young race in the cosmos, and most things we do are for the benefit of mankind.

  but it's still best if humans don't have religion!.

  The doom mongerers, like the JW's and other end time groups, along with the Eco-warrior type crowd would have us believe that things are so so black.

  All we humans have done is bring the Planet to the point where it will no longer sustain life. The media too join in on this doom-fest, they love a story like that.

  Truth of the matter is, from hunter-gatherers with a short hard life, through centuries where things only gradually got better, especially life expectancy, we now have conquered many diseases, have many on the run, and soon will eradicate more. We have lifted millions of people out of starvation and poverty, we are striving to fend off future problems, and improve the lives of people even further.

  It has been an upward trend. Europe has had peace for 60 years or more, and many of the what seemed like insoluble problems between nations and peoples are being solved.

  Yes, there is still a way to go,people are still poor and hungry, but HOORAY for MANKIND for what we have achieved thus far, and I for one am convinced the progress will continue.

  "Yes but what happens when we run out of oil ?" is the kind of question these doomsters ask, so I say to them "The stone age did not come to an end because we ran out of stone", long before oil is depleted (we were supposed to have run out years ago according to the doomsters by the way) we will have found or developed a cheaper alternative.

  The problems will be solved, mankind will give itself another HOORAY ! Then go on to the next, till we have all evolved in to Hooray Henrys.

  Wheres the safest place on earth to run to!!!

  with all the bad things happening now where would be the safest place to be, for myself and and famiy i would expect that would be somewhere in the far east high above the food plain, people there also have much more repect for human life and do not leave their elders to die alone without any respect and have a much nicer famiy society and seem to be much more organised as to their affairs.. .

  Quite anumber of places are safe from intrusion by the JW's, they usually have a majority Muslim population, so the call to prayer may wake you, but not a JW banging on your door just as you are about to eat breakfast.

  the title of this thread is of course, a parody of the wts book: what does the bible really teach?

  not that the witnesses really know.... and this is the problem..... .

  im just amazed at the people coming to this forum from the witnesses who have no idea what is fact and what is fiction in the bible, so we are having discussions about talking snakes and noahs ark; all the weird and wonderful stories written down by the jewish scribes all those millennia ago.

  I like common sense ,and I like your common sense posts Terry !

  As Voltaire says "Common sense is not all that common", so more often than not your posts are a breath of fresh air.

  To me, if you wish to get close to the truth of a matter, you have to use the scientific method, combined with common sense.

  T.H Huxley said "Science is nothing but trained and organized common sense" so he agrees with me !

  Some will claim that there are "truths" that cannot be gained by the use of science and common sense, I would say these are not truths, they are mere ideas, they may in fact be great ideas, but they are not truths, let alone with a capital T

  I was kind of disappointed at first to discover this when I left the WT, I thought then, "Well if they (the WT) are not the Truth, who ,or what is ?" but I soon learned there is no single great "Truth" out there, sorry Muldour and Scully, and even what is "true" now may change in a way, time and circumstance change all kind of things.

  We need to teach ourselves common sense, then at least we may recognise a truth if it sneaks up and bites us on the bum.

  Dear Colfish, I hope you have found enough inf, if not come back and ask again.

  When you get to the Ethics side of your assignment it would be good to state that at no time could a medical practioner who decided a patient needed blood in some form be in the wrong,ethically, if they make the decision in spite of the patients wishes or wishes of the family.

  Of course the law must be adhered to, and best practice guidance from the medical authorities, but the JW's and especially their children, are not making an informed choice in this matter, even purely from a religious point of view, as information has been witheld from them.

  So the ethical action is to administer the medical procedure that is required.

  Welcome Mediator007 !

  I find a similarity with where you are on your spiritual journey and where I was at one time, asking "where can I find like minded ones ..."

  Your journey will not follow the same path as mine or others no doubt, but we all seem to be united in saying, give it time, there is no hurry.

  I found that my first research was into the WT, its history and doctrines, then I looked at other christian groups and non-christian religions, then I came back to the Bible, I firmly believed it was God's word, but I examined the evidence with an open mind and heart.

  I then examined the concept of God,again looking at all points of view with an open mind, but as the old phrase has it, not so open that my brain fell out.

  I am now happy that the conclusions I have come to make sense, and give me a workable worldview and lifeplan. May you find the same, and find the great contentment and freedom that comes with it.
