Remember this was written before the Superman comics, Rutherford was just trying to tap in to a market he had spotted, perhaps he should have done a reverse L Ron Hubbard and gone all out for the Super Hero Comic market.

Wasn't Armageddon Supposed to Happen in the First Century?
by losthobbit into me it's pretty obvious from these verses.... matthew 23:36, matthew 24:34, mark 13:30 and luke 21:32.
...that jesus, talking to his disciples, told them that armageddon would happen in their generation (the first century).
just wondering if everyone else sees it this way, or have i missed something?.

Armageddon makes its appearance in the Revelation to John , probably written at the end of the 1st century or a bit later, the writer would perhaps have been aware of the Gospels and Luke that deal with the coming judgement, and maybe wrote his book to explain that the end would be soon, perhaps he was surprised that it had not come by his time !
The other verses that deal with this, like the ones quoted by you, certainly read to me as though they should have occured not long after the writing.
There is certainly no hint in the Bible that millenia would pass before "the end", I think those early christians expected it "soon", but like modern day Apocalyptics they are chasing a Will O' the Wisp dream, the reality is that mankind is making the world a better place, and will overcome any problems that are thrown at them, and will be here on earh for many hundreds of thousands of years to come.
No doubt in that distant, better future, many will look back on this time of superstition and ignorant delusion with the utmost amusement.
By then, the "End TIme" cults, JW's among them, will be long forgotten.

Loss of the Mashco Piro one of the last Stone Age Tribes
by designs inisolated in the jungles of peru the mashco piro tribe may be near the end of its isolated existence.
first loggers are moving in to their lands and now oil gas and mining operations will end 1000's of years of existence and way of life..

The "Awake" magazine ripped off the story about the Tasaday tribe from Nat Geo and printed it as fact. When the nat geo story was discredited the "Awake" did a peculiar retraction, coz , of course "Jehovah's Spirit Directed" organization is never wrong.
Before that the "Awake" wrote a poor imitation of the "Bricklayers Story" as fact too, but no retraction on that one, this was all decades ago, but I knew from then on that they made things up.

Discrediting an individual so as to avoid giving due thought and attention to the argument
by jambon1 init seems that this has been a tactic that the jw's have used for many years.. i haven't contributed to this board in a wee while but upon my return a month or so ago, i was astounded to read about the article where the society described opposers as 'mentally diseased'.. it's a very basic strategy and one that works.. i myself experienced this with my wife during my more vocal periods of opposition to the society.
for a good while i had a problem with drink.
not a violent problem or anything, just that i drank more.

Once a protagonist in a debate stoops to an Ad Hominim attack, they are admitting that they have lost the debate.
Everyone knows that it matters not the source of information, or ideas etc if they are valid they are valid, if Vlad the Impaler told you something that was true, it would still be true, even though you may not like him, I bet you would get his "point" though!
The JW's/WT use every dirty trick because their position is so very very weak, they do not have solid facts and argument on their side , and nothing approaching truth, so they have to use underhanded tactics.
They try to get in first by undermining any dissenting voice by labelling it "Apostate" (a word they have managed to demonise) or "mentally diseased" or "bitter" etc. before the arguments have even been looked at.
I have never seen a reasonable or honest refutation of so-called "Apostate" views by the WT.

I think a lot of older (maybe younger ones) JW's are going to attempt/commit suicide....(READ)
by Joliette ini've been in lurkmode lately, but with the news that i heard about don cornelius dying, it had me thinking...as this world goes on, and people are coping with this world...i think a lot jw's are going to realize that the end of the world isnt coming...there gonna become more despert, the realities of having to work, pay off debts, etc.
a lot of jw's are going to realize that no magical sky daddy is come and 'take away there problems' and i think the more that they start to realize this, they get older, and there gonna start hating the reality that they have to face.
i had a good friend who's father-in- law (who was a ministrial servant) who had bipolar disorder, killed himself in his car back in 2007. it was sad.

I think it is hard for those that have spent many decades serving a publishing company, as they near, or pass, their "three score years and ten" they get to hear of more and more of their old Witless friends who are dead, dying, or have lost their marbles.
The avearge Dub who has been in for decades has a wide circle of acquaintances (they are not really friends) and so they get to hear this sort of bad news a lot more than normal people, who only have family, work and church (singular) friends, normal people don't know hardly anyone from the next parish, so don't hear all this negative stuff.
I think it does get to the JDubs, but they still go on believing, "perhaps it will come this week, or next", of course it does not.
I don't see a great increase in suicides though, I think they will just slide into their graves in the same deluded state they have spent the last decades in.

Just a Thougth - Since all say they are the only truth, why not choose the best salvation plan?
by DilemmaGF ini was thinking, since all the christian denominations (mainstream; unitarians; modalism; jws etc) claim themselves/their teaching to be the only truth, it would easier to make a decision to choose the best salvation plan and if it turn out to be wrong, minimize the severity of the consequences :).
since i only know about the trinitarians (i'm in) and the jw, i think the trinitarian plan of salvation would much better than the jw.
salvation by grace, not works (true, i don't i can ever live up to god's standard), and i got to go and stay in heaven.

I prefer the Atheist's Wager . (You can do it as an Agnostic too)
It involves absolutely no effort on my part, having decided on it, I need not think of it any more, and being a lazy old sod that suits me.

New one
by freshcrepes ini've been lurking on this forum for over a year, and i thought i'd say a quick hello.. .
i was raised as a jehovah's witness and managed to endure past the encouragement that one receives from age 16 onwards about what is holding me back, and never got baptised.
i figured that making one of the most important decisions of my life requires a lot more thought than people seemed to be giving it, and shouldn't be based on emotion as is quite common.. .

Welcome ! Can I be permitted to give two words of advice ? Firstly, do not be over polite when confronted by total nonsense from JW's, or they take it that you agree with them ! However, I like your compassion, it shows a good heart.
The second word of advice, do please give serious consideration to getting a University education as soon as you can, you have nothing to lose by doing so, and a whole new world of possibility opens up to you if you do.
The World is your Lobster. (See, if only I had got a UNi. education .......)

Draconian Rules for Attending "Special Convention"
by BluesBrother inbritish dubs are invited to attend a special convention next summer in dublin , irish republic.
o k, this kind of trip has been done many times before.
however i have never seen such a crude and rigid set of rules that would apply to their own people going on a trip, at their own expense of course.

I see they are doing Irish Sign Language there, last time I drove a car in Dublin I saw a bit of that ! It was accompanied by the request to "get some drivin' lessons, yer feckin eedjut !"
