Interesting point P... Well, Ann is excellent on the 607 debate as is Londo (the thread Recovery debated on). Yes, you are a NOOB.. (LOL) but seem pretty clued up on the subject too... so maybe he'll take you on as well.

Me... I started reading Gentile Times Reconsidered and have yet to try and get past the first few pages.. but I am determined!

That's the whole thing Pterist.. no other religion is as obsessed with this date... it's meaningless to them. The reason it's so important is because JWs NEED it... to back up their 1914 date. Without 607BCE there is no 1914. Without 1914 the whole belief system crumbles.

I think Ethos/Recovery needs to believe 607BCE to keep his faith in the WTS.

Who really cares when the 70 years started? What does it really matter in the scheme of things? What's so important about the 70 years? God said Babylon would dominate the nations form 70 years. They did, exactly as the bible said. Does it matter what year it began? Secular writers say it was from 609BCE-539BCE.... the WTS say it was from 607BCE-537BCE......... SO????? What's the point??? It was over 2.5 thousand years ago...

I don't understand what's the big deal. Ethos/Recovery seems obsessed with it.

You accept the few secular references for 537BCE... yet you won't accept the many secular references for 587BCE?

Why would anyone think the 7 times of Daniel 4 should have two fulfillments?

each prophecy in daniel had only one fulfilment.

why believe inconsistently that daniel 4:9-32 should have two fulfillments?.

daniel 2: an immense image representing kingdoms.

I saw your comment Paul and thought it was an excellent point. If they haven't got 607BCE as a starting point and the convoluted '7 Times' explanations for what they say was the 'appointed times of the Gentiles' that Jesus talked of then there is no 1914. Seeing as it's almost 100 years since 1914 they've had to make up an 'overlapping' generation to mak it all fit. Now they say they don't know the day or the hour (last weeks WT study). They should just forget the whole thing altogether! OOps.. I forgot... if they did that they'd have to forget the FDS appearing in 1919.. that wouldn't do would it?

i'm reading here almost every day (kind of adicted i think).

but due to the fact, that my english isn't very good, i abstain from commenting most of the time.. nevertheless i'd like to share some thoughts with you.. .

when i learned the tatt over a year ago i quickly became an atheist.

Sometimes I think what we've been fed as JWs (or many other religions for that matter.. ie heaven or hell) has distorted our view of God. I am beginning now to see the difference between the Jesus of the NT and the God of the OT. Jesus said that any who have seen him have seen the Father also. Yet there is much in the OT that shows God in a opposite way. A God to be feared and not loved. I think man's way of visualising who and what God is have distorted him. Also what the bible has to say about creation is obviously not to be taken literally and is actually very limited in what it does say. Man has filled in all the gaps and has come up with something that science has shown isn't possible. It doesn't mean that there is no God or there is no creation.

However what I would say to you as an atheist (and it goes for all of us)... enjoy your life now! Enjoy every moment. Thinking about dying can spoil your enjoyment of the life you have! One guy whose blog I read sometimes said a few days ago:-

"So as we approach a day of giving thanks as well as the start of a new calendar year(which is meaningless by the way, every day is worth making that special), i cannot help but step back and realize that I need to make a conscious effort to invite those feeling of simplicity back into my life.Carrying out, with pride and excellence your adult responsibilities while living life with a childlike passion and simplicity is, in my opinion, the goal of any well led and full life.I sit here with a choice to make this day routine or make it extraordinary...but words are not enough. At the end of the day, I must be able to prove to myself that it was a well-lived day."
