  Biblical definitions of marriage

  so marriage is currently the topic du jour in the tms and this meme's got me thinking about the bible and marriage:.

  but when i bring this up with dubs they say that 'jehovah tolerated this so that the israelites could shore up the numbers; it wasn't necessarily sanctioned by him'.

  can i get some help with a rebuttal?

  Lars, I think you made some good points there. I'd never thought of that about Polygamy before. Obviously the culture in Africa is much more different than in the Western world and having to divorce all his wives would be a hardship to those women. The same as in Israelite days.

  Also in Israelite times the culture was that any woman who stayed single or had no children was disgraced. It was worse for her to be unmarried and have no children than to be married to a man she didn't romantically love. It's difficult for us to see beyond our own culture sometimes.

  if you still go or remember the days when you did what did you think about while you were sat there?

  obviously it's very difficult to concentrate.. lol..assemblies i find impossible and have often drifted off to sleep, listening to the endless same old stuff.. .

  and i want some funny stories.. .

  i'm trying to translate from swahili, i cant find my english bible lol).

  so i had my bible study yesterday and my teacher came with an elder.

  If you look at Acts 15 carefully it tells us it was more than just the apostles and older men.. v4 they were received by the congregation.. v12 the entire multitude became silent..v22 the apostles and the older men together with the whole congregation..

  the problem that had arisen was in Antioch, Syria where Paul had his base as missionary. The Christian Jews there were expecting Gentile Jews to be circumcised, which was why ALL the brothers wanted to get together to sort it out. Of course not all the brothers in Antioch could go so Paul and Silas were sent out as representatives. The answer given was so that 'we add no further burden to you except these (4) necessary things'.

  How many times did Paul get direction from Jerusalem? Take a look at Galatians 1:17-20; 2:1...straight after his conversion to christianity he didn't go to Jerusalem at all! It was 3 years before he visited staying with Peter for just 15 days, during that time he only saw James.. none of the other apostles! After that it was another 14 years till he visited again!

  He was directed by the Holy Spirit, not by a governing body (this word does not occur in the scriptures, also if you notice the wording in the publications, in the 1stC it is called 'governing body' in modern times it is called 'Governing Body')...Acts 16:9.10.

  dear xtreemlyconfused.. yes, I'm not 'out' yet. I still go to meetings and do FS, even though now it's hard to do. I have a lot of family still in and a lot of friends. I can see from what you write that you are a very mature young lady but just going through an emotional time after your discoveries. We've all been there in one way or another. I only found all these things out myself very recently, so I know how you feel. The best thing to do is take things very slowly, give yourself time to take it all in, try and resist the temptation to tell everyone what you've found out. As time goes on and your feelings settle you'll have a better idea about what you want to do and how to proceed. If you want to write I'm happy for you to, but no pressure! :) Take care!

  Slim.. so now I know why my hubby always disappears to do attending at assemblies!! That's an idea.. I could disappear off into the mothers and babies room.. :D

  SIAM.. I am in EXACTLY that same position you're in now.. except my kids are grown and already been taught. My dilemma is the same as yours and I really don't know what to do! I found jwstruggle a great help and I know you post there too. (Some great posts btw). It's almost impossible to know what to do, I'm just taking it day by day, sometimes it makes me feel physically sick at the meetings. Many times I just can't face going. FS I keep to an absolute minimum. I have to bite my tongue to stop myself telling everyone what I really think and feel. If I could leave tomorrow with no repercussions I would. Unfortunately it's not possible.
