Anyone read the latest Awake (on the supernatural)?

just read some of this latest awake on the org's webshite.. it begins by talking about the 'supernatural' - wizards, witches, vampires, etc.

- their popularity and why they might appeal to people.

then it goes on to state the wt belief that someone is 'behind it'.. now, i like a few horror/scary films - when i was a kid, i always actually liked being a bit scared by them, tbh.. the silence of the lambs, a nightmare on elm street (1984), the ring, the witch, the thing (1982) and a few others are all great, imo.. they are just genres and subgenres of film, that's all.

My whole family has lots of demonic stories and experiences - but when you press them for details they contradict themselves. I stopped believing in the supernatural after reading Derren Brown's Tricks Of The Mind. He debunks all of that. Now i think to myself, if anything supernatural did happen to me I'd claim James Randi's $1m prize money. So far, nothing has come up.

My family used to say having any other bible translation outside the NWT would bring demons in. Also, second hand clothes, Harry Potter DVDs, books on conjuring tricks etc. Which is strange because my home is full of Hindu idols and so far i haven't had a sniff of a demon. Slept like a baby since the day i left the cult actually.

Homeless guy begs with the Watchtower

after that crazy story about the bride and groom going out in service in their wedding attire, that reminded me of a scene yesterday in one of the subway stations, a disheveled homeless guy had one hand out begging for some money, "does anyone have some spare change to help me " he kept saying, in his other hand was a copy of the magazine.

so what must've happened was some dub passed him by and instead of giving him a quarter gave him a copy of the latest publication.

although some of the beggars use their money for alcoholic beverage anyway instead of food i'm sure that magazine will be put to good use when he feels the need to take a squat somewhere and needs some paper.

When i last visited Germany i noticed almost all the homeless/beggers had Watchtower magazines. The witnesses get to count them as placements in their report and the homeless get to wipe their ass after taking a dump in a dark ally somewhere. Everybody wins.

What is the name of this specific book?

my teacher is talking about a "big brown book" that is used for any questions or scriptures quoted by the person who jws are talking to.

he used it in the context that if they don't know the answer off the top of their head, they look for the verse in this book.. what is the name of this book?.

Reasoning From The Scriptures - but it wasnt big, it was the same size as the songbooks.

Does enforced shunning violate free will?

Perhaps I am wrong, but I was under the impression that freely and openly associating with a disfellowshipped person is something one can get disfellowshipped for. Therefore, if that person does not shun, then they will be shunned themselves. That sounds like "enforced shunning" to me.

That's what i used to think. But actually, in Shepherd The Flock Of God page 116 it says:

So there is a loop hole. But because this is in the secret elders manual the rank and file wont know this.

I thought about the OP's question when i first left. The majority of JW's who are actively shunning are doing so because they're told to. It has nothing to do with the perceived sin the person may have committed. This is proven in the fact that most family members will still speak to you until your announcement is made. If you ask them they say its to "keep the congregation clean" or that they "choose to stay loyal to Jehovah". Of course some will pull 1 Corinthians 5:11 out of their ass and use this as "proof". But this isn't really the case because if the GB abolished shunning i guarantee that 99.9999999% of JW's would suddenly start talking to you again.

It violates free will because the person doing the shunning may want to talk to someone, but they know there'll be consequences if they do. When in fact, there shouldn't be. An abusive relationship indeed.

I actually think this would put people off approaching, what sort of crazies do this on their wedding day.

Im told this is brother and sister Cholokashvili from the Supsa congregation in Poti, Georgia (the country, not the US state). Lets hope this isnt in their wedding album because when one of them wakes up and leaves they'll look back and cringe.

Is this the best they have now? No REAL practical help from the scriptures? No REAL practical help from the congregation to the community? Just "hope"?

It was crap like this that i envied other religious people that seemed to live happy lives knowing their scriptures back to front and inside out.
