Why "fancy dress" and "theme weddings" were BANNED by our Congregation!

our kingdom hall was in a boring town of 30,000 people so to spice things up me and some special pioneers living with us decided to have a fancy dress up party!

what could go wrong?

In the congregation i grew up in fancy dress parties were banned. Before my generation was born our parents all had a fancy dress party and one elder came as Wonder Woman. He got severely counseled for it apparently, and it was a sore point to bring up even 20 years later.

I would have went as JF Rutherford. Turn up pissed out of my skull with a 16yo female "dietician" on my arm making outrageous claims.

Just Bumped Into My JW Sister And Brother In Town

so im walking through town today on my lunchbreak and spot the unmistakable walk of my younger brother.

this is the one who left watchtower... well it turns out he's returned to the vomit after stupidly turning up to the 2017 convention and a few elders filling his head with seeing our dead dad in paradise and to "wait on jehovah".. a few meters behind him was my sister.

she spotted me first, then hurried up her step to my brother.

So im walking through town today on my lunchbreak and spot the unmistakable walk of my younger brother. This is the one who left Watchtower... well it turns out he's returned to the vomit after stupidly turning up to the 2017 convention and a few elders filling his head with seeing our dead dad in paradise and to "wait on Jehovah".

A few meters behind him was my sister. She spotted me first, then hurried up her step to my brother. Then he turned round and looked at me. One thing that stuck me was their expression. They look absolutely terrified to see me. They then sped up, my sister took out her phone and rang someone frantically and kept looking back at me as she was walking quickly away.

Did i do something wrong?

Yes i did. I waved and smiled. That must have done it. I wasn't gonna approach or anything, i was far to busy for that. But, wow, what a cult can do to people. Terrified to see someone they've known their whole lives who just so happens to disagree about there being a sky fairy who has the temperament of a toddler and loves blood.

do y'all remember the young people ask tape that came out in the late 90s about "bad association"?

i was a fairly small child with teenage siblings and watched it often (with family and alone cause i thought it was the inside scoop on older kids).

that was back when worldly was still very much so a part of dubspeak (i think they started encouraging people to stop saying it in the mid to late 2000s).

First thing that struck me was "wow, American kids really dress like that in school? Hey, what's he got on his head?"

Here in Liverpool, UK if you dressed or acted like that in high school you'd get the living s^it kicked out of you by lunchtime.

now i can finally rant about the things i put up with that i'd never put up with now.. in no particular order:.

Reminds me of a time a middle aged bachelor brother couldn't locate his shoes before leaving for the meet. He turned up suited but not booted, he had trainers/sneakers on. The PO/COBE was visibly shaking with fury. The Pharisees.

Oh i dont know, i think this fella's got it down to a good look. And i bet he's a better speaker than the PO as well.

Dietary Quirks Among JWs

i recently had to accompany an older family member out of state to a family reunion.

it was a big reunion and not much was overtly made of the fact that i am "misguided" and not attending meetings (lost soul that i am) which was nice.

the thing i noticed that i was most struck by was all the dietary quirks in evidence during our 3 days together.

We had a CO that wouldn't eat "foreign" food. Make of that what you will.

This is the same CO that said from the platform that JWs shouldnt go to pubs. The entire congregation thought he was crazy... except that one sister who agreed with him and her husband did too, he was trying to be an elder at the time.

praying out loud at the end of the meeting. especially up on the platform. i hated it.

The thing about giving the prayer was, we're all trying to "pad out" the prater to make it sounds really good. When in reality the prayers in my head were to the point and direct.

What a breath a fresh air to be free of Watchtower. Now i can finally rant about the things i put up with that i'd never put up with now.

In no particular order:

Little kids in suits. I'd see like 2yo boys in a full suit. Im sure the parents thought it was "cute" but, cummon people. Really?
The phrase "wait on Jehovah" to any question that cant be answered. Or when you express a disagreement with some "new light".
Conventions. Sitting there for 6-8 hours with only 1 break in the middle. Which was spent either looking for a marriage mate or if you were already married trying to find someone to hang around with because you're no longer of interest.
Being asked to do mics or sound desk duty. I seemed to be the person called upon to do it every meeting.
Door to door ministry. I WILL NEVER DO ANYTHING LIKE THAT AGAIN. Nor will any child i have or may have. It ends with me.
Passing the memorial emblems. Not that i'd ever go again, but if any bread or wine is passed to me you can guarantee that im gonna eat or drink it. I mean, it'd be rude not to seeing as Jesus told us to. (Im an atheist btw).
Everyone being on their best behavior when the CO comes round. Elders being all jokey and pall-y with eachother all kissing ass to be his best mate for the week.
Those stupid songs.
Weddings were there was an old elder sat at the bar with a notepad keeping tabs on how many drinks each of us have had. This actually happened on a few occasions in my JW days.
The usual douchbag who turns up to the convention in a white suit, sunglasses and white shoes. You know who you are.
The JW boy you see at conventions and parties that is living a non-JW life but puts on a front in the KH but we all know he's got 2 or 3 JW girlfriends who just love to be seen with him. This used to really annoy me. Either be a JW or leave!
"Why dont you reach out?". Elders would say that to me despite me working fulltime, barely making ends meet and having a baby child at home to look after. Why the hell would i want to be an MS or Elder?

Manchester City stadium 1991. I was about 8yo. It pissed down with rain and if you were one of the silly people to have sat in the front few rows that weren't under the shelter you got soaked. And that was just in the opening song!

yes, my family had been one of the silly ones. I still remember sitting on a wet plastic chair completely soaked and my books all wet too. My mum and her sister under an umbrella.

Strip off the old personality

yesterday’s watchtower talked about how by becoming a jw it enabled “worldly” people to ‘strip off the old personality’ and make really significantly good changes in their life.. paragraph named 4 individuals (anonymous names of course and probably embellished tales)) sakura, ribeiro, stephen, and hans.

their lives changed for the good because they found god or because they became jw’s---right?.

so on the way home from this wt meeting, my wife commented to me how wonderful our brotherhood is and how it helps people who would otherwise be ‘lost’ n this world.

Scientology apparently has a drug addiction course that works too. As do the Mormons. And I've heard many testimonies from Born Again Christians that tell me they recovered from drugs or pornography.

All it takes is for someone to replace their addiction for another one, or for them to hand over their thinking abilities to an organization that will tell them what to think, feel and believe.
