  We make judgement calls all the time.....even the most liberal of us. For instance, pedophile organizations lobby congress all the time to lower the age of sexual consent so they can legally fulfill their sexual desires. They cite big studies that indicate that they cannot change their sexual orientation and so are intitled to individual rights under the constitution.

  The will of the majority has spoken on this issue and draws a line that says pedeophiles can come so far but no further.(age of consent)

  Equality is not absolute and is often used as a marketing word just like the word freedom that you and I discussed in a previous thread.

  That's why I asked viewers to choose one that "most accurately describes" their point of view and then qualify their answer. When we vote for our elected leaders, nearly all of the time they will not represent our views to the T. So, we choose one that is the closest to our values.

  You made some very good observations and stated a position. Thank You. I think a lot of newly ex-jws find this kind of critical thinking unfamiliar ground, thus the reason for this series of issues.

  Ok Folks,

  I see some are reluctant to be committed on a social policy regarding this issue, which is the real reason that I raised it.

  C'mon folks don't be shy. No matter what you say, someone will agree with you and some will disagree. No big deal, that'as the way it works in the real world. And if you don't take a stand, others will take one for you and you will live by their decions.

  As Jehovah's Witnessees our opinions were meaningless. In the real world they shape our societies. Don't just state facts, but form an opinion you think our society should live by. Let me expand on the ramifications of the issue.

  Option (A) Indicates that your policy, if implemented will at times trample on the will of the majority since most people are hetero and don't want their children socialized in any way into a homosexual lifestyle if they do not have a strong genetic link.

  Option (B) Indicates that your policy, if implemented will trample on the rights of the minority because they have less voting power.

  Option (C) Indicates an attempt to balance the two. Protect the individual rights of gays, but fall short of giving full societal support (marital status, gay family welfare, gays adopting children) for fear that it will send a socializing message to people that may encourage some to be gay that otherwise would not.

  So, c'mon people take a stand. How would you vote? Then, qualify your answer.

  Issue #1

  I might as well jump into the frying pan with the issue of homosexuality.

  Recent studies done with identical twins have been offered by some as evidence that the origins of homosexuality are the genes. In one study, Dr. Michael Bailey of Northwestern University examined 110 pairs of identical twins who had been separated at birth and raised in different environments. He found that if one was gay there was a 52% chance the other was also. But among fraternal twins, the chance fell to 22%. Because the ratio was higher among twins who are genetically identical, this study has been referred to by many as evidence that homosexuality is genetic in origin.
  The reason why identical twins are such fascinating subjects of scientific study is because they ARE 100% alike genetically. Therefore, if homosexuality is solely genetic in origin, then if one twin is gay, you would expect the chances of the other twin being gay to be 100%. The fact that only 52% of those who were identical in genetic makeup to their homosexual twin were gay themselves would strongly indicate that genes and socialization play roughly equal roles in sexual orientation.
  In light of this and similar studies, should society:
  (a) give the same status of gay relationships to that of married couples because of an evidently strong genetic link? - (rights of the individual)
  (b) Deny gays the same social status as heterosexuals because homosexuality can evidently be socialized or not socialized in many cases? – (will of the majority)
  (c) Protect every individual right of the gay person but fall short of equating the gay relationship as an equal societal ideal to that of married heteosexuals? – (constitutional/legal interpretation)

  What's the Strangest Dream You Ever Had?

  i just woke up from a dream where my girlfriend and i were testing a new spacecraft for nasa.

  the new craft could achieve near orbit on it's own power and speeds of 18,000 miles per hour.

  my girlfriend seemed very impressed that i could fly the craft and was astonished that i was a nasa operative.

  Ok, I'll go first,

  I just woke up from a dream where my girlfriend and I were testing a new spacecraft for NASA. The new craft could achieve near orbit on it's own power and speeds of 18,000 miles per hour. My girlfriend seemed very impressed that I could fly the craft and was astonished that I was a NASA operative. (I'm always playfully accusing her of being a spy because she is from CZECH REPUBLIC and her accent reminds me of the Russian James Bond girls)

  Anyway, we parachute down to an Assembly dressed in our space suits and all the Friends are impressed with the new technology. Everyone wants to eat ther bag lunch with us. My family is not impressed and thinks I'm just showing off.

  More on the Bryant Tragedy

  here are some excerpts from todays oregonian regarding the bryant family tragedy.

  on the night of his 17th wedding anniversary, robert bryant pulled a $100 bill from his wallet and bought a box of 12-gauge turkey shot, officials said monday.. sometime that feb 23rd evening, the bryant family went to bed.

  later, robert bryant got up, loaded two shotguns and shot each of his four children at close range.

  Interesting isn't it? A lot of counselors ask people to do this. Looking back at all those old photos really made me put where I've come from into perspective.

  This is my favorite:

  We struggle now to understand how the members of a church could turn their backs on a family like this. The God we believe in is a God of love and forgiveness, not one of self-righteous hypocrisy. Being excommunicated from the church (a Jehovah’s Witness congregation) had a huge impact on this family and is a practice that should be exchanged for one of love and understanding.

  This family, especially Ashley and Alissa, will never be forgotten.

  That is a pretty powerful indictment. The community should be very alert to the anti-family nature of this religion.

  My severe adolescent depression was due directy to the environment of fear and ignorance fostered by the Society. A few years ago, I went to my parents house and viewed old photographs of our family.

  In every photograph, the children stopped smiling at about age 7 or 8....the age of logical reasoning. I kept smiling the longest in the photos...till around age 13. My siblings faces appeared expresionless while mined appeared as if I was very angry. If anyone hasn't tried this, it can be very illuminating.

  Anyway, sorry to digress.

  The saddest thing about this family tradegy is that the Witnesses will undoubtedly drag this families' name through the dirt and will most likely use it in a meeting part to show what the fate is of those who leave "Jehovah's Spiritually Clean Organization".

  This is making me ill, I'll sign off now.
