i just woke up from a dream where my girlfriend and i were testing a new spacecraft for nasa.
the new craft could achieve near orbit on it's own power and speeds of 18,000 miles per hour.
my girlfriend seemed very impressed that i could fly the craft and was astonished that i was a nasa operative.

how common it is in usa that a jw has a legal firearms?
i have no recollection of wtbs publications handling this matter specifically.
of course general attitude towards firearms in usa is different from europe but so is also legislation.. it is just that once being a concsientious objector i cannot, even after almost 40 years, imagine myself having one.
Undecided,
That was too funny!

post jw life requires us to think as members of the larger society as we look at issues from the perspective of a member of a participatory government.
unlike jw life, we get to have a say in what kind of life we experience for ourselves and our children.
i will present a series of issues that require our judgment, that we as former jehovahs witnesses were prevented in having a say in and may not have ever given much thought to.
Excellent comments everyone. I realy was surprised to get so many well informed comments!
But, I can see where this is going .....great comments and few policy stands. Maybe some feel the issue to be too controversial or is just too private to state a policy stand publically. I can understand that. I appreciate the ones that felt comfortable enough to take one though.
What I can't understand is how we were taught that if we just do nothing, think nothing, and question nothing everything will be all right. Jehovah will simply take care of you. We have all seen sometimes tragically how we were "taken care of". That attitude has no place in a democracy.
So, I'll put my money where my mouth is and fess up to a poilcy I would support. I would probally choose stand (C). Here's why.
First of all this is a democracy. Something that you won't hear on TV is that democracy demands that their be winners AND losers. What! Losers in a democracy? Yes, that is the nasty underbelly of democracy. The best we can do is try to make the winners more sensitive and responsible to the losers and cap the winners somewhat, and then try to lessen the harsher effects to the losers. But the stark truth is everybody cannot win. Anybody who tells you different is selling something.
I would say that every possible individual right of the gay person should be protected, civil rights, job discrimination of any kind(even in schools), military status, health care, etc. But because homosexuality most likely can be socialized in many cases, society should fall short of equal staus in the case of gay marriages, because it sends the message that it is an equal ideal in society to that of hetereo marriage.
The reason is that the majority of parents would like their children to grow up into hetero relationships, believing that to be the ideal for thier children and for society. However, if a child turns out to be gay, you can bet the most conservative parent will start to bear their teeth if their baby is discriminated against.
If we truly believe in democracy, the the bar must be very high in order to overturn the will of the majority. The alternative?; outright socialism or cultural marxism.

don't become emotionaly attached to jw.com.
it seems that many of our friends here have become too emotionaly involved with this discussion board.. it has eaten into their personal lives, and caused upset and anger.. it is a shame as a times there can be great encouragement and words of wisdom here.other times nonsense and triva.. it can be addictive, and i sometimes find myself wandering here too often.. but i think its good to keep yourself detached from the people here unless you know them more personnaly.. internet conversations are different from face to face chats, and people say things they wouldn't normally say in front of someone, or say things due to lack of understanding , of other peoples needs.. we would't want to put people off from coming here by petty bickering and such.. i believe that restraint is sometimes called for and a little patience on our part when we feel hurt by peoples cutting remarks, imagined or other wise.
It really is kinda funny how the personas online are perceived differently than in person. There is one poster here that has a very different opinion in many ways that I do. I doubt that we would have ever become good on-line buddies. Anyway, after he ribbed me a little, he let me know who he was privately. We were roommates and even pioneered together years ago!
I begged him to come down and he drove several hundred miles to get here one weekend. We had a blast, broke bread, had a few beers, reminisced about the past, philosophized, pontificated, and definitely re-affirmed our friendship. We both found out that we had some definite commonality. The commonality was far more valuable that any difference of opinion, and there are several. But really, what more could a person ask for in a friend than they share core values?
The way I feel about it is that, although validation and understanding is extremely important when exiting, eventually we’ll get tired of only talking to people that agree with us and move on to core values regardless of where the opinions go from there.
This board has been very helpful for me. Thank you Simon for providing this!

Good points Sleepy. I feel the same way. I think that its easy to start imagining getting slighted or to take comments personal that are really just opinion disagreements.
Although this board is very therapeutic, we probably shouldn't forget our friends in the rreal world around us.
Good observation.
