One school we had in the 1990's they literally read the organization book to us,, word for word. I thought "I could have done this at home, even though I had already done it.

calling all elders - what goes on at the week long elders school?
by not bitter inmy dad is currently attending a week long elders school.
dad is in his 70's and not in great health at the moment so this is adding to my anger that he is having to leave the house at 7am and doesn't return until 6pm and then has to lock himself away to study further in preparation for the next day.. he has also been told he is not to discuss anything about the school with other elders until they have all attended.
what are they learning about that isnt' already out there for all to read anyway.. they can't be learning more bible stuff as the bible is there to be read by the general public so i can only assume that its all top secret stuff that the rest of the congregation can't know about.

they live in la-la land, in story land.. it is embarrassing to realize how uneducated and dumb they sound.. they pride themselves in being ignorant while living their life in this "world".. it's too bad so many witnesses drink the koolaid and prefer to stop exercising their brains..

Hey punkofnice
"They know exactly what they're doing. They are not under delusion. I won't give those kiddy fiddlers that luxury. They are fully aware of what they are doing as evidenced by the propaganda in the rags and from the podium."I tend to agree with you, everything written by WT has skillfully worded propaganda, as if they follow or have authored a textbook on how to manipulate people, they have a long history of misleading people, and their manuscipts at the conventions, magazines, and other correspondence are too well orchestrated and planned to be written by innocent geniune christlike people. There is an overwhelming agenda: control. Once you are aware of the different characteristics of their communication it is easier to identify. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda

How important are the bricks and mortar you currently live in?
I am not divorced so I didn't walk away from my house that way. However, I lived in a "family commune", as most call it, with mom, sisters, brothers, etc living real close. After my dad died, I had a brother that came home from working overseas at Bethel branches (oh, the love absorbed at the bethel branches) and decided that he was going to be a "difficult" neighbor to say the least. I mean not nice about anything, totally an ass, blatant lies, deceit, and hatred. So I talked to my wife and we sold the house. We were not really wanting to leave the house because I had worked on it so hard and it was very nice, but left it because the unloving attitude of the family.
Moving was easy, we sold everything and just drove away. I did make some money on the deal, and I am still renting, at a really good price. But I view it as a small price to pay for freedom. I have neighbors that will say hi to me when we see each other in the yard, are nice to my kids, we can ask a neighbor to feed the cats or dogs and are comfortable with that. My wife is getting her degree and soon we will both be working, and the hot conversation is "where will we move to?". My daughter wants a place by the ocean. So I think it has kept us active in the game of life having the changes, and there are plenty of nice places on earth to live, even in other countries.

Gerrit Loesch was at our DC today!
by goatshapeddemon inso, unexpectedly, the final talk was announced today and to my surprise and evil glee, they announced gerrit loesch as the speaker!
first off, at the beginning of his talk, he interrupted himself in the middle of his sentence to scold the microphone brother to lower my mike it's right in my face.. anyway, it was the talk on inspired truth, vs. inspired falsehoods.
he went through 6 expressions inspired by the demons.

Hey Goatshapeddemon,
I was only able to listen to the audio of another convention downloaded from sendspace, but I don't doubt that with Loesch running overtime 45 minutes that he had plently of more information to embellish than was supposed to be presented. I had an email from someone that mentioned that Loesch was the GB speaker. They didn't mention specifics but I may be able to get the notes.

The comments about college are about 18 minutes into the talk. It is still a bashing of education, listing it as "inspired error" in between examples of a sister marrying a brother not "free" to marry, (speaker said she is disobedient) and viewing pornography. Satan's false reasoning is that higher education is the road to success. Getting an education takes possibly getting a part-time job while attending school, then too much time and energy studying; what time will be left for kingdom interest, some have fallen away. People that fall away from the "truth" are paying attention to inspired error and are not successful.
The speaker gives the experience of young JW's that wanted to be happier and continued their education at the university; they are no longer in "the truth". Some got engaged in immoral conduct. Another young sister had unbelieving father and he was going to pay for college, but she chose to pioneer, Father was upset. However, after 28 years of pioneering the father says that out of all the children she is the only one happy. The others went to college (the not happy ones)
So if you are going to college the ideas are presented that even if someone pays for it, you will not be happy, only pioneering brings happiness. If you attend college you are not obedient and will fall away from the truth and are listening to and acting on inspired error by Demons.
It is also inspired demonic error to save too much for the future or retirement. Inspired truth "completely demolishes" inspired error, as stated by the speaker. Makes me wonder why the leadership is so paranoid about thoughts that don't agree with Jw's.?

Footnote on Awake 8/22/1994 Whaaaaaaa happened?
Supplementary Education
The Watchtower of November 1, 1992, noted concerning Jehovah’s Witnesses and the full-time ministry: “The general trend in many lands is that the level of schooling required to earn decent wages is now higher than it was a few years ago. . . . It is difficult to find jobs with decent wages after completing simply the minimum schooling required by law . . .
“What is meant by ‘decent wages’? . . . Their wages might be termed ‘adequate,’ or ‘satisfactory,’ if what they earn allows them to live decently while leaving them sufficient time and strength to accomplish their Christian ministry.”
So The Watchtower said: “No hard-and-fast rules should be made either for or against extra education.”

Number 4 falsehood was "higher education has nothing wrong with it because it is a conscience matter". He gave three reasons it is demon-inspired:
1) Studies show that most kids go to college to receive higher paying jobs. No shit, really?
2) college education makes you look down on people, knowledge puffs up. Except for the people who learned the truth after college, they're ok because they learn true humility in the org. Seriously, he said that.
3) college education tends to encourage people to rely on and try to "save" this system, making the end seem further away than it is. Really? They've been teaching this hogwash for 120 years. I'm sorry, it's time for a stream-of-time reality check.
I have carried a copy in my bookbag of the Awake articles in the early 1990's about education under the full page heading, "What is the Bible's Viewpoint" and it basically said it was conscience matter, consider the pros and cons. I thought that Jehovah doesn't change, so why was the "Bible's Viewpoint" change, 20 years ago it was ok, but today it is a demon expression?
The new stance (early 1990's) on education made me think at that time the organization was finally seeing the light and "Jehovah" was working with these old GB out of touch ignorant leaders. So much for that thought!. I still have the articles readily available although I haven't went to a meeting in 4 years. I feel sorry for the young ones in the congregation today, they will be so mixed up with who to believe: their religious leaders or their school councilors. No wonder the young are depressed or leave.

Flood insurance and cover for overland flooding
by Simon inwith the huge floods in alberta the news now is starting to cover the issue of property damange and insurance.. we've never really thought a lot about insurance cover for flooding because it became a big issue in the uk about 5-10 years ago with limited land availability leading to building on flood plains and the eventual inevitable consequences and so when we bought over here we didn't buy anywhere that was a possible flood risk.
our choice seems to have worked out as we've been completely untouched by the recent issues but tragically, others have been less fortunate and apparently few people are covered for 'overland flooding' which is where water enters your house through doors and windows.. it's hard to really know what is fair.
i understand the reason why insurers don't cover it and the arguments on both sides.. one one hand, we included the flood risk when puchasing a home.

"I have no idea but can people in Tornado or Hurricane prone areas get insurance for those?"
Flooding, as noted is usually building at an elevation or an area near to a body of water with the potential to rise significantly. What about these homes in the Western United States and other areas of the west that have built their homes in areas prone to have "natural" uncontrollable fire prone conditions.
In other industries the insurance companies wag the dog. In other words, if a costly trend begins, the insurance companies will usually make it so expensive to modify behavior, such as where people build their homes.

I think about the innocent believers that have been lied to over the decades that support construction projects like this. They pay for their own way to the project, (sometimes $100's of dollars in airfare), take off time from their work, families, and any personal money making pursuits for weeks, months and years.
WT can afford much when all they have to supply is material for contruction, equipment to build, and food for the workers. Everything is great and wonderful for WT HQ's, but my father-in-law who has went and starved where the need was great, served as an elder for years, served the quickbuilds to an excessive degree and is 70 something years old and needs some house repairs, sorry Charlie, he's up crap creek. Volunteers are only used for officially sanctioned projects.
I also like that they have volunteer workers fix up these homes and offices for "construction workers", but this is also just a scam of purchasing more real estate, fixing it up to "use it" and then selling it when the project is over. The Wt saves in the cost of labor, including workers compensation, and social security, no wonder they have such nice buildings. I think about the volunteers that WT has used to literally wash the walls in exisitng buildings. It's kinda of like, we don't need you here, but if you want to do something, wash the walls, and clean the toilets.
