I know a family that came in the truth in the mid 1980's and their son applied to bethel when 18 years old in the 1990's. The young man and the family were crushed that he was not accepted.

Anyone else an Ex Bethel "volunteer"
by BackseatDevil ini was wondering if there were any other ex-bethelites on here.
i personally regularly went for temporary work at brooklyn then was assigned to the farm for a year and a half.
it was... one of the most bizaare experiences of my life.. so i wrote it all down (finally, after some 15 years) so i won't bore anyone on here with the details of the story - because bethel doesn't show up until chapter 15... and for you straight folks, it gets a bit gay in two places... but nothing gross.

Yes, unfortunately, served nearly five years overseas on various branch locations, always living in temporary barracks.

I know of a single brother who went to Bethel (New York City) in 1968?/at eighteen years of age; he eventually served alongside the GB for years. He was a trusted person, bethel elder, giving talks in the French speaking congregations and assemblies. He was feeble or ill regularly, but he had been in Bethel for years and wanted to get married. About five years ago perhaps more, when in his mid to late fifty's he was asked to leave. I have spoken to him and he is trying tax preparation services, bookkeeping etc, and he named off about 15 different states that he had accounts with individuals. He mentioned that he just couldn't make any enough money to make ends meet. He is still single, his mother died and he is living in her old house. It is a pitiful situation, he has given so much to the WTBTS.

Again, if this is the case, the elders in the congregation nor WTBTS has the authority to make you present them with this information. It is a personal matter to be handled in and between your family and, if you chose, a lawyer that draws the DPA up.

How many of you followed the WTS direction on education years ago and have been screwed by it?
by Julia Orwell ini'm really interested in this question because i've heard for years that if you forgo further education and go pioneering, when you have a family down the track you will get a good job because jehovah will provide for you because you pioneered.
as long as i was a kool-aid drinker, even then, i thought, "how does pioneering pay your bills?
surely education should come first.

I'm sorry to hear about all these sad stories; it seems that many of us are still struggling.
It kinda piszez me off to read people acting like giving up a college education was nothing for them and they have been so successful. The old "I'm so talented I didn't go to college and still make $100,000's a year, plus bonuses, plus retirement, plus investments, health insurance etc., crap touches me and it turns to gold. " If that's your attitude, perhaps you need to be on a convention encouraging the youth to not seek further education. Perhaps you should teach you own children that they won't need an education, just look at yourself. I'll bet you won't, and your making plans to send your kids now to a University near you.
How many actually served in the pioneer service with a dead end cleaning job and a POS for a car, or got sucked into going to Bethel and giving your best productive years to a scam, learning to be obedient cleaning a toilet. Then, when you’re in your 60's are sent home from Bethel so you can retire.....On WHAT? Or who has been injured at Bethel and sent home handicapped for life with no money to fend for yourself, but all you were qualified to do is physical work; well no more your now physically handicapped. Again, no education to fall back on.
Or how about giving up a lucrative job to serve where the need is great, going through all your savings because the end didn't come as expected, had to pay for all the kingdom hall bills out of you own empty pocket because the congregation was so small and poor. Stayed in the assignment until you died because you believe WT Society's "end is imminent" crap, then end up dyeing with nothing, and your wife, children, and family have nothing but bills when you die, and they don't have an education either to fall back on.
Some families were given the opportunity for full scholarships for their kids, where they could live at home and go to school, but thanks to the fanatical ranting and demonizing of education by WT and her cohorts, these kids were forced to Pioneer, and these kids are now in their 50's and 60's and continue to get screwed. Unfortunately, the abuse is beginning again and there will be still more victims.
You can say what you want about "a college education is not needed, Look at me, I'm successful without it" but for most of the population you don't even get an opportunity, interview, consideration for, not squat for an adequate paying job unless you jump through the "tested for fitness" test that college provides. College and University is the world’s way of in measuring that someone is tested for fitness over a period of time and ready for a responsible position. Some have faked this with experience, but business today doesn't want to learn on experience, it's too expensive.
If you don't have an education, you will have only limited success, and that is what this thread is about. The experiences read here are not of all the successful doctors, nurses, engineers, and scientist, etc., but experiences of people that knew they could have done better in life, but because they listened to WT's faulty reasoning and empty promises, they are screwed for life.
How about the thousands of people worldwide that have gone to prison over the societies opinionated stance on alternative service, offered to both plant trees for the Forest Service and live at home or attend a University with no jail time. These young men that went to prison to substantiate their faith, could have went to the University, but NOOOO, WTS wouldn't let them "compromise". Some of them endured rapes and beatings in prison.
The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society holds a tremendous amount of culpability to its members and former members, that they have manipulated, mislead, lied to, borrowed from and did not pay back, by greatly influencing them in what is their PERSONAL decisions, NOT any of WT's business!
Instead of people making decisions based on a lifetime, WT promotes making short range decisions of a few years out because armageddon is so immenient, and life ends up being a hodgepodge of short sited decisions. WTBTS is a printing corporation that does not pay taxes and does not have to abide by the laws of the land on safety or most other things because they are using volunteer labor, and “are religious”, but they also can ruin young people’s future and force them into slavery for themselves.

Yes, I got the royal theocratic shaft from not following my gut feeling with regards to education, and having a father that laid the law down so hard I did not attend college. Yes, he was an elder. I graduated HS in early 1980's.
I was accepted to the universities school of engineering in my home town, a very respected institution worldwide. I had good highschool grades, and took many college preparatory courses in high school, (my parents did not know the difference). The summer before starting university, dad met with me several times, trying to reason, and I always came off feeling I had won the "reasoning". He would bring up armageddon being so close and I would bring up the false hopes of 1975 for which he believed, it was information that was fresh at the time. He photocopied all those famous quotes out of WT bound volumes of not growing old in this system, and not even having the time to complete a four year degree.
When he realized he wasn't making progress with me he sent my older brother who was the star of the family as the 29 year old PO to further the harassment. The older fleshly brother did not convince me either and I felt I had won that arguement.
Dad tried to get me satisified with working for him, and I told him that I didn't want to spend my life driving nails, I wanted to do something with my mind. I asked what was wrong with structural engineering, it was not philosophy. He would bring up the threat of drugs, alcohol, and women at the university. Anyway, Dad threatened me beyond what I ever thought and I acquiested. I fell into a depression.
The family business that Dad wanted me to support, I told him explicitly in 1979 that there is no future in a small family business in constrution, especially ours as the boys all fought and hated each other and their wives. Little did I know I was a prophet. We did well through the 1990's but who didn't, but come 2000 and by 911 the wheels just came off. The remaining fleshly brothers all pulled in different directions and argued. (Both had years of bethel service) Everything was sold and we fleshly brothers went our separate ways. One is in bethel, and the other is a momma's boy, living in her house. I wonder if the brother that went back to bethel (divorced) is expected to get out of bed on rainy days and go to work, or expects to be paid and not show up for weeks at a time but call the bookkeeper to write him a check for 40 hours?
In 2008 I joined a local union and started a four year program with the University of Phoenix, the only thing I could do having to work and provide for my family. Thank goodness for the internet and online courses. I am taking my last course and I lack 2 weeks from finishing a four year degree.
My wife recently graduated the nursing program and is being interviewed. She mentioned that if I wanted to go back and get the engineering degree, she would support me, like I supported her in nursing.
We have also broken the abusive controlling nature of WTS and the kids WILL get an education and that is not optional. Fortuneately, I still have some time before retirement.
My grand question is: "What business is it of a "congregation" or of the WTBTS. They should mind their own business, and any elder or witness that shuns or mistreats someone that is attending college should be ashamed of themselves. What a hateful group of people.

calling all elders - what goes on at the week long elders school?
by not bitter inmy dad is currently attending a week long elders school.
dad is in his 70's and not in great health at the moment so this is adding to my anger that he is having to leave the house at 7am and doesn't return until 6pm and then has to lock himself away to study further in preparation for the next day.. he has also been told he is not to discuss anything about the school with other elders until they have all attended.
what are they learning about that isnt' already out there for all to read anyway.. they can't be learning more bible stuff as the bible is there to be read by the general public so i can only assume that its all top secret stuff that the rest of the congregation can't know about.

One school we had in the 1990's they literally read the organization book to us,, word for word. I thought "I could have done this at home, even though I had already done it.

Hey punkofnice
"They know exactly what they're doing. They are not under delusion. I won't give those kiddy fiddlers that luxury. They are fully aware of what they are doing as evidenced by the propaganda in the rags and from the podium."I tend to agree with you, everything written by WT has skillfully worded propaganda, as if they follow or have authored a textbook on how to manipulate people, they have a long history of misleading people, and their manuscipts at the conventions, magazines, and other correspondence are too well orchestrated and planned to be written by innocent geniune christlike people. There is an overwhelming agenda: control. Once you are aware of the different characteristics of their communication it is easier to identify. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda

How important are the bricks and mortar you currently live in?
I am not divorced so I didn't walk away from my house that way. However, I lived in a "family commune", as most call it, with mom, sisters, brothers, etc living real close. After my dad died, I had a brother that came home from working overseas at Bethel branches (oh, the love absorbed at the bethel branches) and decided that he was going to be a "difficult" neighbor to say the least. I mean not nice about anything, totally an ass, blatant lies, deceit, and hatred. So I talked to my wife and we sold the house. We were not really wanting to leave the house because I had worked on it so hard and it was very nice, but left it because the unloving attitude of the family.
Moving was easy, we sold everything and just drove away. I did make some money on the deal, and I am still renting, at a really good price. But I view it as a small price to pay for freedom. I have neighbors that will say hi to me when we see each other in the yard, are nice to my kids, we can ask a neighbor to feed the cats or dogs and are comfortable with that. My wife is getting her degree and soon we will both be working, and the hot conversation is "where will we move to?". My daughter wants a place by the ocean. So I think it has kept us active in the game of life having the changes, and there are plenty of nice places on earth to live, even in other countries.

Gerrit Loesch was at our DC today!
by goatshapeddemon inso, unexpectedly, the final talk was announced today and to my surprise and evil glee, they announced gerrit loesch as the speaker!
first off, at the beginning of his talk, he interrupted himself in the middle of his sentence to scold the microphone brother to lower my mike it's right in my face.. anyway, it was the talk on inspired truth, vs. inspired falsehoods.
he went through 6 expressions inspired by the demons.

Hey Goatshapeddemon,
I was only able to listen to the audio of another convention downloaded from sendspace, but I don't doubt that with Loesch running overtime 45 minutes that he had plently of more information to embellish than was supposed to be presented. I had an email from someone that mentioned that Loesch was the GB speaker. They didn't mention specifics but I may be able to get the notes.
