October 15 Study WT, Page 17 Story: "Richard, Lowell, Ramon, Bill:" A Gay Subtext?

i don't now whether anyone else read that article, but several of the photos , and the comments under the subtitle "happy marriages" wherein the happy quartet suggested that they acceded to marriage only when uber-zealot females who took priority over physically attractive girls could be found.... made me wonder... hmmmm... .

I read the article once again and can't find anything that speaks for a gay subtext. I personally know Richard (been in the same cong for several years and he is still a good friend of my parents), Lowell (he was the branch overseer in Luxembourg when I spend there a year at the construction of the meanwhile closed branch office), and also Raymond (from my time in german bethel). Sure at least in Raymonds behavoir you could find something that could be labeled as "gay" (but more a certain "softness" of gesture and the way he spoke).

By the way, Richard Kelsey, who was Branch Overseer when I was at Bethel, was one of the most humble and friendliest person, I've ever met while I was a Witness. Very often I think about him and how it is possible that he is unaware of the fraud he and his wonderfull wife (Peggy) are part of.

How did you break the news to your parents?

so one of the things both me and my wife are faced with is breaking the news that we've stopped going to meetings to our parents.

my wifes parents could go either way, they have made several critical remarks of the wt over the years, while my parents are die hard jw's.

i tossed the idea around of sending a letter or doing a phone call or just not saying anything.. we've decided that were just tired of having to hide our true feelings and play pretend.

I wrote a letter to my parents (die hard jw since the early fifties), just saying that I don't believe the witnesses have the truth and invited them to talk about it whenever they want. I didn't get an answer. I called them two weeks later, just to ask, if they've received the letter. My dad said: "Yes". I asked: "Do you want to talk about it?" He said: "We are not interested." I said:"You are not interested in why you son after more than 40 years as a witness came to the conclusion that it isn't the truth?" Again he said: "I'm not interested" and finished the call.

Since then I didn't had any conctact with my parents. This was a bit more than a year ago. Sometimes I think it would have been better to say nothing. Maybe I would have had the opportunity to make certain comments that could raise some doubts in them. But my goal isn't to convince my family (even I would love to see them leave the cult). More important than the relationsship to my family is my own integrity and the way I consider myself. I don't see my parents anymore, didn't see them very often before. But I have to look in the mirror everyday. And I don't like to see somebody looking at me, who doesn't stand for what he thinks and what he feels.

this may be useful for those that have specific questions about bethel, but don't know who of us actually served there.

could we hear from those that served at bethel and where you served?

I've been at german Bethel from 1985 -1986, and again from 1989 till 1997 (construction, maintenance, magazine shipping).

2014 - an interesting year

for me, i'm awaiting for october 2014.. and i'm interested to see how the brothers will react; both in print and in the kingdom hall.. have others thought that it's a bit odd that the eartly christian era was only 74 years in length ( from the baptizm of jesus in 26 ce to the death of the last of the apostals in 100 ad); but the last days are 100 years long?.

I remember in 1979 they made a big deal about 100 years of the watchtower magazine ("Don't miss the next 100 years" ).

But 2014... it would not suprise me, if there will be no mention of 100 years since 1914 at all.

Stronger Christian presence on JWN?

i've only been a member here for a short time, but it seems like there are more christians on the board lately.

for the first few months that i was on jwn, it appeared that there were very few that argued in favor of a creator and belief in the bible in particular.

there seems to be several more that have recently joined...or at least posted more regularly regarding belief.

For me this forum is great and I prefer this one to the german ones I know (even it is a lot harder to express myself in a foreign language). They are either very atheistic (what is, even I'm considering myself as an atheist too, a bit boring). Or most of the members are still christians, who don't like to debate and just want to be nice to one another with all these "good morning" and "good night" and "I love you all" and virtual hugging stuff - which is although very boring.

I love to read the posts and comments of believers who are not just willing, but although able to explain and defend there point of view. Always looking for an argument that shakes my conviction that there is no god. Haven't read any up till now, but I'll keep looking for it.

For this - to come back to the OP - it's fine if there are joining more believers this forum. I'm reading here now for a bit more than a year and I think although that there is a slight increase of believers lately. I'm looking forward to learn about their view of all the topics that are discussed on this forum.

New Pattern regarding Science in the Awake

reading the first couple of awakes for 2013 i think there is a pattern developing.. they have the regular "could it have happened by chance" article on something amazing in nature but they are also interviewing a scientist who is also a witness.

this is a pretty interesting tack on a number of levels.. firstly it is sending out the implicit message that "look, this educated person accepts creation, the flood and every other account that is at odds with generally accepted science, so that should give you confidence that you are right as well".

secondly, as a magazine designed for public comsumption is suggests to non-witnesses that there are many well educated people who accept the bible.

I agree with everything you wrote konceptual99.

I made an interesting observation in the german issue. In the interview with Massimo Tistarelli they adress him formally, as if he wasn't a witness. But he's baptised since 1992. It is just an hypocratic way of pretending some kind of respect for Science, while there is absolutley none. Hard to believe that Tistarelli doesn't realize how he's beeing (ab)used.

The first vid is great, but I don't like the second one. Tyson is right about not labeling or categorizing people just by a term like atheist or theist.

But his comparision of atheists to non-golfers or non-skiers flaws. I don't ski and I don't care about giving this fact a certain name or label. But in that moment, someone came up and told me: You have to ski - in that moment I'll became a non-skier.
