At what point did the WTS become overly controlling?
by jambon1 ini used to hear about good `ol days when people were happy dubs.
people had fun, did things together and it seems by the tone of the converstaions that there was less control over every tiny detail of the brothers lives.. i remember the 1st time someone told me as an unbaptised publisher that i would eventually be 'counceled' for not wearing a suit.
i was utterly stunned!

I remember when it didn't seem to be so controlling. The 70's I remember lots of activities, ball games, pot-lucks were really big. I went away for several years and when I returned things were different. Really different.

Question about shunning from someone who has never been a JW....
by whyizit ini wondered, since the jws claim that jesus is their teacher, what evidence do they have of jesus shunning "bad associations"?
it seems to me, from reading the bible, that the religious people of his day really gave him a hard time, because he actually spent the majority of his time with "bad associates", rather than shunning them.
thomas, though he followed jesus, wasn't totally convinced.

WELL! I don't get to log on much anymore so I missed the exit. I think gunshy may post as another newbie or perhaps an oldie but will return. He likes himself too much not to be here anymore. I will respond anyhoo.
gunshy I have posted to this thread a few times now and read your response. It is now clear to me that you comprehend what you read however necessary to fit your argument. But that’s ok, especially when it comes to reading the Bible; most, if not all, of us are guilty of that sometime.
I was never dfpd for smoking. My use of the smoking example was simply fitting since jgnat asked you to supply biblical info with regard to smoking specifically.I was not talking about what is healtful, sensible, or lawful. I am referring to what is sinful, biblically speaking
I figured you ignored her because there is no scriptural reference to be found on “smoking” but plenty on being unclean. But still, where does it or will it stop with the power and control issues the GB wants to maintain over followers of "Jesus"?
My mother, who has partaken for more then 40 years, was a chain smoker. She smoked 3 packs a day and quit cold turkey when the society gave everyone 6months or be disfellowshiped after the SG announced the dangers of smoking. Personally I believe the choice should have been left to the individual. You see, she would have quit ANYWAY based on the findings of the SG. But because of the “threats” of the GB, she went through a much more difficult time then nessessary and with no support.
You see, plmkrzy, your words themselves suggest you are in disagreement with the WTS. Is it your smoking that has you marked until this day or is it your blatant attempts to turn others to your side (divide) and away from the WTS, refusing to give up the unclean thing (smoking) that has you marked?
It is my words themselves that you haven't paid any attention to. Or perhaps you are just attempting to insult me in your own way. Or perhaps you’re just dancing?

my post went somewhere else. sorry for the blank.
I do not recall stating anywhere that Christians "should" go barhopping or otherwise associate with anyone who does. BUT, since my words were taken out of context anyway, barhopping was in fact a "girls night out" thing in my last congregation. Of course it was all very innocent…just a couple drinks and dancing, for the aerobic benefit. I personally know MANY MANY jws that go to clubs where alcohol is served, I don’t know that that is a sin.
Back to the point, even though it wasn’t, I will ask myself, gladly,
where "confirmed drunkards" would be... in a bar or in a Kingdom Hall?
If I were in a Kingdom Hall and did in fact see a “confirmed drunkard” there I would like to ask those with their noses in the air, whispering to one another, to pull their self-righteous heads out of their asses and pat the drunk on the back for not being in a bar, where he/she shouldn’t be due to his/her obvious problem with alcohol. Then they can simply go their own way, as apposed to asking the “confirmed drunkard” out for a drink, dinner and a movie (associate with).
With regard to “Associating with”
There is a BIG BIG difference in “not” associating with and just being plain rude. One does not need to associate with a so-called wrong doer. Are you rude to everyone that you do not associate with or are you just rude toward a select few? I have seen so-called Christians in the Kingdom Hall exhibit the most rude and unkind behavior toward others that have been disfellowshipped. HAUGHTY is not Christian like and being directed to behave in a haughty manor is even worse. Perhaps the idea of shunning has been blown way out of proportion within the wtbts, at least in the US.

- shun·ner nounRomans 16:17 Now I beg you, brothers, look out for those
... you, brethren, to keep a watch on those who are causing the divisions among you, and are leading others into sin, in defiance of the instruction which you have received; and habitually to shun them.
Romans 16 KJV
17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. 18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
· 1 Peter 3:11 Let him turn away from evil, and do good. Let him
Let him shun evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and pursue it. (WBS) 1 Peter 3:11 WEY: Let him turn from evil, and do good; Let him inquire for peace and go in pursuit of it.
Put it all together along with Romans 16:17 and 1Peter 3:11and you get:
Shun or avoid deliberately and especially habitually coming together as partners, friends, or companions with those who are causing the divisions among you, and are leading others into sin
Shun or avoid deliberately evil
The scriptures discribe the “TYPE” of persons to shun/avoid.
The wtbts instructs its members to treat someone that may have been disfellowshipped for smoking as though they were evil and attempting to cause divisions within the congregation.
There IS a difference between evil people and a person that “fell short” or committed a sin. We are all sinners but we are all not evil people.
The wtbts would not instruct anyone to treat the flag with disrespect, but its own members?
We may stand, out of respect, when others are saluting the flag so as long as we do not salute it. But do not so much as say hello to a brother or sister that was dfpd for smoking.

In regard to barhopping, consider the following scriptural reference to words of Jesus himself and then ask yourself where "confirmed drunkards" would be... in a bar or in a Kingdom Hall?

Why did you choose your USER NAME?
by In Between ini think some people actually use part of their real name.
i chose mine because i really feel 'in between', in that space where your not a jw anymore but really haven't figured out where you are in life and what path you want to take.
just thought it would be an interesting topic.

Mine was given to me many years ago when I was plumcrazy. I use to do things some folks considered a bit dangerous.
I no longer am of course. I've had different reasons over the years to keep the nick name. I'm a bit older now, more stable, and I just like the color purple. plum

Daniel 4......
by Stromboli inlet's assume that the 70 year prophecy will be confirmed by all archeologists and geremia 29:10 is correctly rendered "at babilonia" so 607-537 is fine.
when we get to daniel 4 we have the dream and the tree is compared to the king nebuchadnezzar.
the wt confirms this and all is fine.

Gunshy
I'm curious, plmkrzy about a few things.
One has to do with the prostitute comment.
One - do you know any religious leader anywhere that openly, in public has prostitutes washing his or her feet? I'm curious because of your statement
My comments were made in sarcasm, not to be taken literally…in a sense. My point was that whatever society we live in, is what decides what is proper and what is not. Or I guess I should say what is “socially acceptable” and what is not. Regardless of what behavior a person exhibits after they get done washing your feet is beside the point. If someone is behaving in a manor that is considered, to whom ever, to be unchristian we don’t have to go barhopping with him or her anymore then we have to practice shunning. I doubt that Jesus would have “shunned” a prostitute for continuing to be a prostitute anymore then he would have partied with her. He may have prayed for her.
Do you believe that “all” Jehovah’s Witnesses in all countries practice shunning?plm

A priest and a pastor from the local churches are standing by off the road,
pounding a sign into the ground, that reads:
The End is Near!
Turn Yourself Around Now,
Before it’s Too Late!
As a car sped past them, the driver yelled, “Leave us alone, you religious
nuts!”
From the curve they heard screeching tires and a big splash. The priest
turns to the pastor and asks, “Do you think the sign should just say
’Bridge Out’?”that tickled me.
