I've been studying martial arts for almost ten years now and both my kids started when they were little. My oldest gave it up, it wasn't his cup of tea and my youngest is very much into it. It 's been nothing short of a great addition in my life and as for my youngest who is still active, it has done a lot for him also, in a very positive way.
I would occasionally get the sermon about what i'm opening myself up to, the bad side mostly being a "False sense of security". It's wrong to put your faith in weapons or training in self defense rather then trusting in God. I just learned to ignore it because nothing you can say will convince most JWs that what your doing has any real benifits.

Karate
by Ranchette inthis year i have learned so much and what i keep being taught repeatedly through experience this time instead of what someone tells me, is that much of what the society taught us about the world and many of the things in it is pure nonsence!.
i'm just giving one example for now even though there are many.. my son who is in elementary school has over a period of time expressed a desire to do something extracurricular.. oh the shame!!!.
now out of all the different things out there we chose karate.. jws frown on this because its a form of self defence, a competitive sport and they have labeled it and all martial arts in fact as demonized.. he is learning shotokan karate.he loves it and not one demon or demonized thing has happened so far and never will.. in fact i like what they are teaching my son.. this saying is on the wall of the school or dojo,.

What makes the GB different?
by thinker inwhat makes the gb different than other wt members?.
this seems to suggest that because the wt has told you some truth they are worthy of your complete confidence that everything they say is the truth.
russell explained his "enlightenment" like this:.

New thread = What makes the GB different? or MADE?!Is this comming soon?
I am very interested in what you have to say about
this.I also have a background of being very close
to someone who is anointed and I have always pretty
much kept certain things that have been shared with
me to myself simply because I can't imagin anyone
relateing to it. I have a great deal of respect for
my mom even though I may not have the same respect
for the WTBTS. There are a lot of things that just
don't add up when it comes to the way they seem to
want to pick and choose thier own personal anointed.
I believe my mom is and not because she's my mom but
because she always seemed to have a stronger insight
interpeting scripture then that of, shuuush....the GB.
but she has always remained very modest never bolting
out a rebuttel when she was in disagreement with
something that was said from the speaker ect. She
usually does as she damn well pleases as long as it
is within the area of being a good christian regardless
of who may dictate how a christian should behave,
she usually chooses to follow Jesus example rather
then mans. I've never known her to shunn anyone, ever,
unless they deserved it and they would have had to
do something really bad like hurt a child or murder
someone and then again she might not even shunn a
murderer if it was someone who murdered a child
molester, in fact she would probably shake thier hand.
Anyway i am anxious to hear what your expierences are.

I remember everything, well almost everything, that
I was taught regarding the cross and what it had to
do with Jesus and the whole cross thing was more on
the lines of something not to obsess over
because it doesn't matter, in those days when they
killed people that way they used both. Some may have
had cross beams and some may not have. As for the
nails, plural, he could have had a nail through both
hands and another nail, making it plural, through
both feet. But in any event the point in not making
a big woop dee do over it, was it a cross or was it a
steak, is insignificant and nothing more than a
distraction away from the whole point of him dieing.
Example, if a very dear and close friend of mine was
killed, say shot to death, the last thing I would
want to do is have a miniture repleca of the gun that
killed him made into jewerly and wear it around my neck.
And as for the idea that
JWs believe that he died on a pagan symbol, i've
never heard it that way. However they did publish
many times that the cross was in fact used in ancient
pagan ritchuals(spell ck) as a fertitity symbol
and if i'm not mistaken you can find this in some
encyclopedeas.A Christian, I did enjoy reading the information you
and JanH supplied, it was very interesting.

wasn't the cross a fairly new term added to the bible?
It will be interesting to see the replies.

How Do You Deal With Stress??
by JerryTX inwhat do you do when you're being blindsided from seemingly every direction and you're drowning in stress?
what do you personally do to counteract it?.
reading joelbear's latest post ("joelbear needs to calm down")reminded me of what it was like when first exiting the watchtower.

Beat the shit out of something.
Just joking. TiChi i've heard is a great way to manage stress.
i know several people who practice this and i'm going to give
it a try.

Are you really ready for big moral issues?
by Mindchild inwhile reading the abortion thread on this site today, i was reminded of a college class i took on dealing with ethical and moral issues.
i learned something interesting in this class and it was that just because we have strong beliefs about something, it doesn't give us any rights to impose our beliefs on others.. this is of course the "christian" way...to demand that their beliefs should be the standard by which we all live our lives.
this intolerance, or in milder cases disgust for nonconformers, is in itself one of the huge moral issues we face.. essentially, regardless of things being right or wrong, our world defines societal norms by community standards.

"I would be doing more than keeping an eye on them."
I whole heartedly agree. And there are a few stories
I would love to share and have no problem doing that
but not on the NET. Even though most of us are
annonamous there's always that chance of
being caught in a very incriminating position so I
think it's a good idea to be careful about admitting
too much. Call it paranoid if you want I can live
with that.

A lot may find this offensive but it is my opnion.
It is more then obvious, or it should be anyway,
that in to many cases forcing some of these victims
to bring the abuse out in the open by going behind
their backs and publicizing it anyway against their
wishes may only cause them more harm. Even though
intentions would be good, we don’t really know how
their lives will be affected from it not to mention
other innocent victims it would spawn. Each situation
is unique. Even if the story is all to familure and
most of them are, still each case is unique because
everyone’s living situation is different and their
relationships with loved ones and friends and even
neighbors and classmates are theirs.
This may sound a little on the vigilante side however
when ever I come across a victim of abuse, especially
molestation, within my sphere of influence, I have no
problem keeping an eye on the abuser and letting that
person know that I am keeping an eye on them where
ever they go. Iv done it before and I have no problem
doing it again if needed.
It works. If everyone who knew of someone who was being
abused would do that, and mean it, it would make Impact
and it would help.
The molester is not likely to challenge you in most
cases and if they did, So what!
plm
I'll tell you why I feel this way. The first time I
remember hearing of someone being molested that was
fairly close to me was when a good friend of my moms,
a sister in our cong. came to my mom as a friend in
confidence, not knowing what to do because she found
out that her husband was molesting thier daughter.
I don't know why she was at our house, I do know that
she went to the elders with it, I wasn't aware of
what took place there. Anyway to make a long story a
little shorter, she got a restraining order against
her husband and filed for a divorce. Believe or not
the courts gave custody to the molesting father and
ordered her to leave the home.
Sounds wako but it is every bit true.
When it comes to trusting, i'm sorry to say but because
of this and many many many other situations the judicial
system is nearing the bottom of my list. -

For those who grew up a JW . . .
by Trixie indoes it ever surprise you when you see people that you grew up with as a jw and they're still witnesses?
i went to school with a lot of those jw kids my age and i can't believe that they continue to be jws when they are free of their parents.. i want to say," you're an adult with a high school education or a ged!
haven't you figured the scam out?!".

Supprised? No not at all. I still run into people
I new as a kid who are not only grown now with their
own kids but their kids have kids now that are growing
up in the "Truth"
In fact I don't know but a hand full of people who left
(of those I knew as a kid)
and a hand full who were df'd. probably amounts to about
20% out, 80% still in.
