they won't be apologising for any errors/falsehoods they have promoted in the past that fail.. congregation members must be quick and apologise for their errors to avoid harsh discipline/disfellowshipping.. when they change a major belief/doctrine you must not complain or criticise them.

Actually, they DO say that to excuse the GB. They just never extend it to the rank and file members.
It's always interesting when we start readjusting our thinking after jettisoning something we held dear. We start to notice patterns, real or imagined, that we wouldn't dare speculate before.
ATM, you're having fun with your new freedom to look at things critically. You'll notice things. Some of the biggest WT gotchas were with people innocently noticing things that others wouldn't have. a few months later it was revealed that the watchtower bought him a house in lumberton, north carolina.. however, and correct me if i am wrong, since leaving the gb nobody has reported seeing tony attending jw meetings or participating in field service.
in fact nobody has reported seeing him anywhere, not even at a local liquor store.
Vidiot, that is a fun scenario. Unfortunately, not likely to happen in the real world. Tony out drinking in public is the last thing any of them would want, including himself. Too much chance of another Bottlegate or your scenario playing out. Besides, as previously discussed, he quite probably believes what he preached. It's highly unlikely he'd want to hang out with "the worldly" and apostates; we know from his videos that he despised them. Someone else will be buying his booze, and he'll be consuming it privately, perhaps with a small group of friends (if he has any).
A thought just crossed my mind: instead of kicking him out or demoting him, why didn't they just kick him sideways? They could have just created a new position and title for him , eg. Consultant to the GB. He could still have attended board meetings and argued for the hardline position, just couldn't vote. It'll probably always be a mystery what really happened.

with what is arguably the biggest change to jw life in recent decades (the scrapping of publishers counting hours) what does this lead to?.
in my mind these are the results;.
1) a massive decrease in 'preaching hours'.

If this is their conclusion, that they need to go mainstream to survive, it's got some major flaws. One being that the mainstream denominations are already mainstream, and they are struggling to keep attendance up, let alone attract new members.
The other is your main point. Going mainstream means that they are just one religion among many and lose their main carrot 🥕 and stick 🏒.
