There is now ice on this lake.
Edited to add: Unfortunately, I know this because three teenagers were playing on the ice and fell through last night. One of them died.
she will probably kill me for posting these photos, but i can't resist.. last thursday, our rachel (princess here) and one of her friends decided to dive into a local lake and do a polar bear swim, despite the fact that the temperature was in the teens and there was fresh snow from the night before.. here are a few photos.
you can see the snow on the ground and notice everyone else is bundled up.. .
this is before she dove in.

Who's complaining? I was just telling how it was.
It was cold, very, very cold.

Any idea what the water temp. was? The coldest I have been in was around 46 and it gave me an ice cream headache every time my head got dunked.
I couldn't feel anything but my pounding head. Richard told me the next day that he couldn't put his head back in after the initial dive. I knew I'd swim much faster with my head down so I pushed through the pain.
I need to go back out with Steve's dive computer to measure the water temp. I'll just put my arm in this time though.

Richard and I swim across and back this lake 2-3 times a week from late May to late September every year. I thought it would be a great idea to do a Polar Bear swim in it to "christen" the year of swimming. We weren't able to schedule it on New Years Day and ultimately had planned it for January 11 because his friend visiting from Montreal really wanted to be there and she was going home that night. We woke to snow and temps in the teens. Neither one of us will ever back off from a stupid idea like this, (and give the other the opportunity to say the other backed out) so we all piled into our cars and drove to the lake.
We originally were going to jump in and climb back out the ladders. With the temps so low we were afraid of our hands sticking to the metal railings so we had to dive in and swim all the way to shore. I knew if we tried to count down and go together it would take all day and I'd have to get my frostbitten toes cut off so I just dove in before Richard had a chance to do anything.
It's all on video and will be on Youtube soon.
Quite simply, the coldest and most painful fun I've ever had. It's not that I couldn't do it again. I just don't think I need to. Been there, done that, have proof.
Next.

it snowed here at the end of december and i said then that it usually doesn't snow here in the seattle area until january or february.. well.............they predicted a big snowstorm last night, and it didn't happen, but it's snowing now, really hard.
not sure if it will last long, because the weather forecasters can't seem to predict much correctly, other than rain and wind.. i was hoping to take pictures but it's dark, so will have to wait until morning.
a cold front is supposedly going to last awhile here, so the snow should be around for a few days this time..
There was an article in the Seattle Times last Saturday that said the schools may not have to make up all the snow days. The governor declared a state of emergency or natural disaster (can't remember exactly what it was) on December 15 when we had the huge windstorm that knocked out power to most of the state. It hasn't yet been lifted and the districts can petition the state to have the lost days waived from Dec 15 on. If so, they'll only have to make up three days and two are already built into the school calendar. They were to be released on June 20, a Wednesday. If they only make up the three days, Monday the 25th will be their last day with a noon release. If they do have to make up all the snow days, they'll be in until June 28...so far. We usually don't have snow days until February so I'm not holding my breath anymore.
It's pretty, that's for sure. We have a plumbing company and are getting overloaded with calls for freeze breaks now that we are thawing out. Unfortunately, the roads are not passable right now at 7:45. Hopefully this will turn to rain soon and I can send him out. For now, I'm going to make another pot of coffee.

if you've already been 'announced' and were at the kingdom hall to hear it, how did it feel?
i think when my time comes i may be there.
a part of me says "sod 'em", but another part wants them to see how happy i am.. hmmm, not sure..
Was I present for my announcement? LOL! HAHA! And miss one of my regular volleyball nights?
Nothing gets in the way of volleyball. All but one of the men on my team are ex-dubs, it's awesome.
We just had the anniversary of our DAing last week. Is it a coincidence that I ran into BOTH elders who came after us that very week? Haven't seen either of them in four years and then see them both in the same week. I didn't even realize it was the fourth anniversary of our DAing until I read this thread.
I was running one morning and looked up to find myself face to face with one elder who was in field service. I grinned and never missed a step, kept right on running. A few days later I turn the corner at Costco and there is the other elder. Same thing, grinned and kept on walking.
The elder who instigated the witch hunt has two kids who could be DF'd at any time. Why is it they turn a blind eye to their own adult children and come after people like Steve and I? Don't they see their own hypocrisy?

there is a significant difference in the prices of houses that are built of brick exterior to comparably sized ones with vinyl exterior.
i assumed brick costs more because it's more durable, but was surprised to find that brick houses such as the one i chose at random pictured here for sale in texas actually costs over 50k dollars less than the one with the vinyl exterior in the far northern us.
both have four bedrooms.
In the Washington state Puget Sound area, the minimum price for either of these houses would be about $350,000. Garage with the vinyl siding and what appears to be a larger lot would be a plus. The newer look of the brick would be a plus. Just depends partly on taste of the buyer.
I live in the Puget Sound area (Edmonds) and the minimum price for a house period is $350,000. An older ranch on an average lot will run you $350,000 + . Eithere of those houses would be well over $500K around here. You can only compare them if they are in the same neighborhood. I love the brick.
read some books on this card game, played some home texas hold ' em.
watched them on tv.
the new bond movie casinoe royale has a great texas hold ' em game in it.
I play.
We have Hold 'Em parties once or twice a month. Usually have 6-16 people playing, $5 buy-in for about $15K in chips, re-buys are $5 for about $8-10K. You have to be under $1K to re-buy and once the blinds hit a certain level, we stop the re-buys.
Second place gets $10, winner gets the rest...unless it's a pretty big pot, then we split 70-30.

a local student at foss high school in tacoma wa was killed today by another student.
the other student was arrested.
this school is a few miles from us, and my kids have visited for school events.
I heard about it on the radio this morning. I was shopping and only caught a snippet about it being a shooting in Tacoma.
I'm sure I'll hear more about it later on the local news.
