I was visiting a friend in Vermont once and went to special assembly day with him. The Co gave a "needs of the circuit" part on "Incest and Beastiality"...I was new and wondered why !!!!!!!...how scary was this...I looked around as he was giving the talk and noticed some squirming and shifting eyes...upon leaving, I noticed that some looked quite "strange"...

LOCAL NEEDS TALKS, ANY YOU REMEMBER?
by minimus inone of the best tools the elders have to counsel the congregation is the local needs part.
how does one usually get picked for this talk?
generally, during an elder's meeting, one elder will have his pet peeve.he convinces the body that this issue has to be handled by the body.

Reinhardt was one of the most honest and humble people I ever met...thanks

How to Ruin Your Family and Children
by metatron in1. teach your children that everyone they know that isn't a witness.
- baby sitters, teachers, policemen, the kind old lady who gave.
them a dollar for ice cream - are wicked, led by satan and will.

Metatron...excellent post...one other point which always got me:
Highlight "priveleges" (such as holding mike, or cleaning or being an attendant) as if this was the main goal in life. As a result, establishing "classes" right before their eyes...the priveleged and everyone else. Everyone else gets to be "marked" as being not spiritual; not moving with the organization. Instilling bias (and the inevitable competition and pressure this may bring) in a young mind is the sick result!
Always apprecaite your insight !

JWs @ My Door !!!

Jim...I agree...you really can't win an argument with JW's...they'll just spout the party line and if you don't agree...they label you an apostate (or worse) and kick the dust off their feet and move on...but to reach their mind...to get them to question and consider...now that takes some cunning and planning and effort...I just look at myself...for years no one could have made me "see" what I wasn't willing to see...I had all kinds of labels for people who tried otherwise...and was suppoeter by the Society in my warped thinking...just like many on this forum now once were...but once the seed was planted...once I began to question...the floodgates opened to question many many things once held sacred and true because the WT said so...
Getting a JW to this point, especially one who comes to your door, is a noble feat...and well worth the effort.

Where are they now?
by RunningMan inthere has been a fair bit of discussion regarding witness kids, and whether they stay in the organization or leave.
looking around me at the the dc this weekend, i began to wonder whatever happened to my old group.
when i was younger, i grew up in a congregation that had a lot of kids.

interesting...in my congregation very near WT Farms and the "bethel influence" the umbers are even worse.
form 13 years ago...of 18 children...now only 5 are still with it...2 ms...3 other sisters active...all the rest are long gone...and sadly forgotten by the org...this too also in a congregation with strong families...i believe this to be close to the norm...in a DC in NYC in the early 90's it was said that the attrition rate in NYC of teenager witnesses was about 90%...the WTS BLAMED it on poor family study habilts...

Volunteer Work is Never Encouraged
by Mary ini always find it so annoying whenever there's a wt study on the good samaritan.
no one at the hall ever suggests that the idea behind it, is that we should be helping our "enemies" in a charitable way, such as feeding them, clothing them, helping them out in a physcial way.....nope they always turn it around to where it only means we should be preaching to our enemies, cause lord only knows, actually helping someone out in a charitable way means less than nothing in the organization.. anyhoo, the last time we had an article on that (couple of years ago), i specifically put up my hand and said "this is not talking about preaching to our enemies.
the samaritan did not preach to the jew nor vise versa.

Mary...good post...some years ago...a CO named Murphy said..." helping (volunteering) some organization or cause in this 'system of things' was like putting a band aid on a cancer patient"!!
I was very new then - back in 1985 - and a real "society man'...but even this made me think...it's a pretty slim and sick view about the WT position and how they easily take from the same system they otherwise suppossedly shun...
Just last night in the service meeting ( I listened in with my wife on a tie line - I am inactive) there was the last part about helping others. The first paragraph referencesd Jesus holding his hand out to cure a sick non believer because he "wanted too"...the entire rest of the article and all the audience comments was slanted towards only helping the brothers and your family...this was totally opposite the message Jesus related in just the first paragraph...this is sick !...I can't believe how narrow and closed minded these people are...NO ONE thinks !!!
Glad you are volunteering and getting a good measure of satisfaction from it...helping people is truly a loving gesture...and so self rewarding...

The WTS at its farm complex in Wallkill NY has allowed severaol farm properties to remain on the tax roles so as not to be an additional burden to the locals. Meanwhile, they have also paid made many payments and contributions in lieu of taxes in that area (I am not familiar with Brooklyn). They have built parks, firehouses and roads. They have donated much labor, materials and equipment in assisting the local towns (Pine Bush NY particularly) thru difficult economic times. They are know as a very good neighbor there. I am not a JW apologist. The WTS there though has tried to be reasonable with the local authorities.
