A Gilead grad missionary once told me that he thought it was a sin to pay attention to a bad speaker. He recommended a little nap or personal planning.

Pathetic Speakers
by Alpaca inthis is great.
i was suffering through an interminably long sunday p.m. public talk (we flip-flopped w/ the other cong--at least sunday a.m. was a little more tolerable because there was still some of the day left to do something).
the speaker was talking about "physical training being beneficial for a little" and how some exercise was necessary.

Now King David was old advanced in days and they would cover him with garments but he would not feel warm so his servants said to him "let them look for a girl a virgin for my lord the king and she will have to attend upon the king that she may become his nurse and she must lie in your bosom and my lord the king will certainly feel warm. And they went looking for a beautiful girl throughout all the territory of Israel and finally found Abishag the Shunammite and then brought her into the king. And the girl was beautiful in the extreme and she came to be the king's nurse and kept waiting upon him and the king himself had no intercourse with her. 1Kings 1:1-4
SO, this is cool. This is the kind of uplifting story that could actually make me want to serve Jehovah.
I had one brother suggest that this was God's final punishment of David the Lecherous. He finishes his life spooning with an extremely beautiful young virgin and HE COULDN'T GET NONE.

Terry:
I don't know if the US Agriculture Dept. still sends out agents to instruct farmers on the latest advances in modern farming. But there is the story about an agent who visited a farmer and started updating him on all the new types of crops, fertilizers, equipment, irrigation, insecticides etc. The farmer sat patiently and listened half heartedly until the Agent was done with his "informative update". The agent was ready to leave and asked him "So, did you get any ideas from my presentation?" The farmer responded "I don't farm nearly as good as I already know".
Terry, we can read books. We all have had thinking courses. Many of us have very good shrinks. We have the internet where we can research this stuff in depth. We know about Plato, Aristotle, Ayn Rand, Objectivism, General Semantics, Korzybski, - basically, we know the need to get our maps updated on a regular basis so that we understand the territory. But, we still do stupid things because knowing HOW to think clearly is just a tiny fraction of our problems. We smoke, overeat, have unsafe sex, destroy our relationships, take drugs, believe crazy religions IN SPITE of our thinking. Changing behavior is VERY difficult. Habit will sabotage clear thinking every chance it gets. You are prescribing a remedy that we all are working on in the first place. If people thought too rationally none of us would be here.
Don't get fooled by the occasional compliment from some people who think you have enlightened them. They will say "oh WOW Terry...I want to learn more Terryism" but their bodies (ID) will "fuck" them up as soon as they realize nobody's watching. I think most of us on this forum are sensitized to people who would "enlighten" us.

LOVE, ALTRUISM & EVOLUTION
by Dansk ini'm an evolutionist.
one cannot argue that evolution isn't a fact.
however, i'd be interested in the better informed amongst us here explaining in simple terms how the feeling of love evolved.

Terry:
My mistake. I was thinking in terms of alturistic behavior. Altruism as a philosophy is as bankrupt as just about any -ism. Sorry to put you through the time consuming process of explaining all of that.
But thanks for the effort. At least I know what you mean and our distance isn't far apart.
See, you ended up doing something altruistic. You knew what you meant. I didn't. You must have spent an hour thinking about it. Another half hour writing it. For what. Not even a tall one at Starbucks.
Thanks for clarifying.

You and RAF have zeroed in on an important point. And it is kind of a which came first the Chicken or the Egg? Is there some selfishness at the bottom of love? Sure. But that doesn't change its structure. As RAF points out when a good deed is done it is done and who cares if someone gets satisfaction from it. If a person wants a metal. Then that's after the fact and becomes their personal problem. And if you make too big of a deal about your altruism the group will punish you.
Aren't we "altruistically" selfish and "selfishly" altruistic?
An individual oranism may adapt in a way that it gets some kind of advantage over others resulting in competition. But for that adpatation to be conserved it needs the group. So evolution is not really geared to competition but to conservation of adaptation. The adaptation does you no good if the group doesn't provide you with mates and other goodies.
In the end we only have the world which we create with others.

Prove that altruism is a "neurosis". Then, you will have successfully rebutted my comment that your statement is a sweeping generalization.
Do you think by implying "I do it too" (with reference to generalizations) makes your statement fly?

Didn't get to go to college? Want to see what it would be like?
by grey matters inin a move to "democratize education" many top universities are now publishing class information online.
content can range from lecture notes to audio and video of lectures, assignments, and practice exams.
the article i read was called "yale for $0 a day" and originally appeared in the wall street journal.

Grey Matters:
This is a very appropriate link for this discussion group. Unfortunately most here will not click on your link.
The thing that strikes me is that the universities don't have to do that. Of course you can basically take the courses on line and get 0 certification but it also doesn't cost you anything. The point is the "knowledge is free". If a person WANTS knowledge - even an Ivy league level of education- they can get it.
Contrast this with the paranoid way the Watchtower makes their information available to the public. Jesus said "you receive free - give free". The Watchtower could put ALL their information on the internet. They could put the current Watchtower on the internet. Even though they are cutting the Awake down to a monthly they could easily put a Weekly "Awake" on the internet. They could put their entire CD rom on the internet. They could put Videos of the annual meeting on the internet. They could put videos of their public talks on the internet delivered by their best speakers. They could transcribe the discussion of the daily text at Bethel breakfast . They could...they could...they could... but they won't.

When the biologist Haldane was asked if he would die for his brother he said no but he would die for 2 brothers or 8 cousins.
