Winning wars doesn't get you re-elected. Bush doesn't want to repeat his fathers mistake and seem like he didn't do anything about the economy.
It won't help the economy at all. State taxes will go up to make up for programs that are cut by the Federal government. Which is fine. States should be taxing their people instead of making the Federal government tax everyone. This gives better control over funds.
The economy is simply going to finish this down cycle until all the fat is gone. It will recover on its own. Bush will reap the benefits if the recovery is felt by election time. If the recovery isn't felt strongly by Next September the Democrats will get back their control. Since recoveries tend to be longer than recessions the Democrats will probably hold onto the presidency for two terms. The republicans should have let Gore win and then they would have gotten into the recovery rhythm.
Unfortunately the recovery is going to be derailed when we become victims of the next act of Super Mega Terrorism. As Warren Buffet says "it's not a matter of if - only how and when"

Russian Missiles are good to go. The fact that they don't have a good army or navy means they have to rely heavily on their Rocket Forces.
You are making a serious error by saying Russia is finished as a world power. As long as they have the capability of delivering a deadly strike against the USA they are a counter balance to the US monopole. That's why they just completed war games last weekend with the US as target. Smart bombs? What smart bombs when Russia has the ability to knock out GPS satelites. This was one of the maneuvers included in their game.
It is one thing to be a futurist. It is another thing to grasp onto straws and ignore the negative possibilities in the future.
People who try to write off Russia forget the lesson of Weimar Germany following WWI. An empire is most dangerous when its pride is hurt, its territroy shrunk, its population thrown into poverty. I think JW's don't officially practice the institution of slavery anymore. Even though the early Christians did. So maybe they'll change some more of their rules some day.

Who says trust is a good thing? What rule in the universe says "You OUGHT to be able to trust people" I don't "trust" myself 100%. Trust is a fancy word for predictability. Boring. People who are real predictable make great accountants.
Predictability equates with death. I have some pictures of one of my favortie parks when I was a kid. I took those pictures back to the park and was surprised by the fact that some of the same small rocks are there. Rocks are predictable. You can trust them.
Are people bad just because they are unpredictable? Aren't other people entitled to the opportunity with becoming bored with our asses? Can't they leave us for other preferences?

This has all happened before. When Christ didn't return in the first century. You can only maintain a sense of urgency for about 4 generations. Count the years from Russell to now and you have a situation that mirrors the rise of the Catholic church.

6. You can't trust the lay people to teach so lets write a Catechism that covers the important points. While we may not be good teachers there will be a test to make sure everyone's got the main points.
7. Just to make sure any new ones value the Bishops - only the Bishops will do the baptising.
8. Since the young ones aren't getting baptised we'll do that when they are small and don't know about sex yet.
9. No more talk about when the end is coming. It is enough to know that it will come some day. As a matter of fact we don't care if he doesn't come because we aren't serving with a date in mind.
10. The ugly sisters who pioneer with the hope that God will eventually find them a mate will be rewarded with a big wedding to Jesus. We'll give them some strange clothes as a symbol of their sacrifice.

Christianity as it was practiced in the first couple centuries was pretty strange. Cult is a useless word. It makes you think that some religions are Cults and therefore "bad" and other religions aren't cults and therefore "good". It's bogus - and is calculated to keep anticult professionals permanently employed.
My post was meant to illustrate that the JW experience isn't as unique as some here would like to believe. It is not a justification of JW craziness. I am not committing the "they do it too, fallacy".
I think all religion is off to a bad start if they teach you about a GOD who can't seem to speak for himself and needs schizophrenics to get the word out.
