  has anyone else observed or even taken part in the strange phenomenon of defending something even when you have doubts about it?

  it's not a new phenomenon; i think freud called it "reactive formation".

  i notice every now and then, jws and/or their supporters tentatively surface on the jw discussion board.

  DOUBT is the very foundation of fanatacism. At the core of a fanatic is a person who hasn't connected all the dots. A fanatic doesn't have faith. They are affraid of making the leap of faith. So they stand at the edge of the abyss and just jump up and down - never getting to the other side.

  Instead of facing their own doubts about what they "really" know they pick on others for having doubts.

  Fanatics have tough lives and eventually either surrender to their doubts or kill themselves because they believe infidels deserve death. Sometimes they kill others in the process. We should never underestimate the dangers of dealing with fanatics. If you find you are dealing with a fanatic its best to leave them alone - for your own safety.

  Congregation gossip - Why so rampant?

  is is just me, or did every congregation have a big (as in greater than in the non jw world) problem with this?

  how have some been affected?

  A congregation is a "small town".

  According to scientists our brains evolved to the present level of complexity because of the need to deal with the interactions in a hierachical group of about 100-120 members. The typical traveling group consisted of about 3 to 4 generations of a family which would come to about 100 people.

  Gossip is part of human nature and is essential to the functioning of an organization.

  The death penalty is a residue of irrationality left over from superstitious vengeful relgious thinking. If you believe in the Death Penalty you might as well go back to being a Jehovah's Witness.

  It assumes that humans have a complete understanding of other human beings. Just a few countries in the world carry out the death penalty. The United States is in good company - Saudi Arabia and China.

  The woman should be locked up so she can't do that again.

  Humans on other planets

  through research over the years, it seems to me that aliens do exist, and even it some of the alien abductions are "demonic" or "ginn activity" as many claim, there are still many tales of humanoid beings from other planets that have been seen on earth.

  this is something i've struggle with for years, because jw and mainstream christians alike write it all off as demonic etc.

  anyone have thoughts on reconciling belief in god with aliens, even humans on other planets?

  Time To Put Prayer On Hold?

  this huge tsunami disaster.

  thousands and thousands dead, others in grave danger of deadly disease, grieving parents seeking their children, whole families decimated.. in all good conscience, how can anyone who is untouched by this, pray to god for his usual ration of daily bread?

  our needs being so miniscule and even petty in comparison with the tsunami victims, how can we possibly ask god for anything at the moment?.

  was it not jehovah?s promise to never kill humans again by means of massive floods?

  i guess knocking on 100,000 deaths is just a minor slip-up.

  knowing the response of jw's to the horrible situation in asia and their reasoning of it, makes me feel indescribably sick in the stomach!

  "Kingdom Service". That was a good one. They were a little schizo about who in the congregation were "ministers".

  I remember the old INFORMANT. That would be a fitting name for the monthly news letter considering the current state of the organization. Imagine a monthly newsletter that would keep the congregation up on everyone's responsibility to meddle in other peoples lives.

  Maybe they think there is some significance to the fact that 1290 days from September 11 2001 comes on the Memorial date of March 25 2005

  Daniel 12:11 "And from the time the constant feature has been removed and there has been a placing of the disgusting thing that is causing desolation there will be one thousand two hundred and ninety days."

  Maybe they think there is some broader role for the organization in the immediate future.

  i've been fairly active on this board for the last month trying to get to 1,000.. this has not been an easy task for me.

  This is my 999 post. I've been fairly active on this board for the last month trying to get to 1,000.

  This has not been an easy task for me. My posts aren't just brief comments. I know some of you can do a 1000 posts in a month. Heck some posts are just emoticons. I'm not trying to criticize short posts after all they are the thing that keeps this forum going and they are like a glue that holds this thing together.

  I am reserving my 1000 post for a comment on a really significant event - the start of the Great Tribulation. I may never make the 1000th post. In that case this IS good-bye. But then again that 1000th post if I ever make it will also probably be good-bye.
