So we can pretty much conclude that the Mankind's Search book was not "food at the appropriate time".

DaVinci Code & "Mankind's Search for God"
by proplog2 inthe watchtower doesn't want its members to see the da vinci code.
probably for the same reason they don't want its members to read their book "mankind's search for god".
they went to the trouble of researching and publishing this attractive well illustrated book.

Are JWs Discouraged From Seeing The Da Vinci Code?
by Seeker4 inin another post on the da vince code, it starts by saying that the wts doesn't want the witnesses to see that movie.
does anyone know if this is true?
where has it been stated?

I made that statement on a post about Mankinds Search for God book. They don't officially forbid seeing movies that aren't R rated. However, an Elder, MS or Pioneer wouldn't want to be seen coming out of a theater where such a movie is showing.

The elder told you wrong. It was a book with questions at the bottom corresponding to the numbered paragraphs. That means "study book".
Who wrote the book? Does Barabara Anderson have any insight into how that book was viewed by the writers?

Vomit:
I like the book because it actually attempts to show the importance of choosing a correct premise on which to base your conclusions. Unfortunately its main premise is that the Bible is so much older than other ancient writings. If we followed that reasoning they should still be studying the seven volumes of the Studies in the Scriptures.

The Watchtower doesn't want its members to see the Da Vinci Code. Why?
Probably for the same reason they don't want its members to read their book "Mankind's Search for God"
They went to the trouble of researching and publishing this attractive well illustrated book. They even put it in a format for study with the questions for each paragraph placed at the bottom of the page.
It was released 16 years ago (1990). For a couple years after its release the Kingdom Ministry encouraged special months where the book was to be featured at the door.
But since then it seems to have been placed on the clearance list. Every once in a while they encourage the publishers to clear out some of the older pre-1987 books in special campaigns. In 2000 and 2001 they also encouraged congregations that had copies of Mankinds Search to offer them during the special clearance campaigns.
Since 1990 we have studied many publications twice but we have never studied the Mankinds Search book. This in spite of the fact that there has been a special effort to reach out to people in the USA who are from areas of the world where our work is banned ie. China and Moslem Countries.
You would think that after the 9-11 attack they would want to broaden their membership's knowledge of other religions especially the Moslem religion.
The book has been effectively back-shelved.
The DaVinci code makes people question the mythological basis for Christianity. It makes people think about "alternative" sources for the history of Christianity. The end result is at least the creation of doubt about ALL such ancient sources of "truth".
The book Mankind's Search for God will NEVER be studied at the congregation book study groups. They don't want their members to read things like the following study questions:
What are some manifestations of the world’s various religions? What does the history of religious devotion indicate? In what way do most people have some form of religious devotion in their lives?Does religion make an impact on the modern world? Illustrate.
Why is it not wrong to examine other faiths?
What factors usually determine a person’s religion?
Why is it not reasonable to assume that the religion of one’s birth is automatically approved by God?
What benefits are there in examining other religions?
Why should we not hate those whose religious thinking differs from ours?

How do you know Satan didn't write the Bible?
by seattleniceguy inthe standard christian story on the bible is that god wrote it to let us humans know what's going on, lay down some rules, and tell us how to get saved from our pitiful state.
as everyone knows, i don't buy any portion of this.
but i have a question for the believers.

Even if an entity did some amazing miracles it does not follow that their claims about themselves are necessarily true.
If an entity starts predicting scores for sports events, heals down syndrome kids, and stops hurricanes you can never know if they are really doing these things or if they have some help from some still greater undisclosed entity.
And just because some entity does something wonderful for you today that doesn't mean that they may not decide to do something awful to you in the future.
We are trapped by whatever information our sensory systems are capable of delivering. Our brains are not universal "truth" detectors.
This is why the Bible is not authored by an omnicient omnipotent omnibenevolent being. Such a being would never hold us accountable for disbelief.

Do you think that the Book of "Genesis" is a fairytale?
by booker-t ini mentioned before on another post that i am in college working on my ba degree and i am having such a "hard" time with believing in the bible since taking my science class.
the information that i am learning is totally destroying my faith in the bible.
i still believe in jehovah and jesus and would never chose the "atheist" way but i am wondering if maybe the bible is just a book of fairytales to teach us a lesson.

Don't let the fundamentalists set the agenda. Their insistence on believing all or nothing is wrong. Those who say that the whole Bible is nonsense are probably vicitms of the false dilemma presented by the fundies.
You should treat the Bible as you would any thing else. In the final analysis you ought to be able to pick and choose what makes sense and seems factual.
Some of the Bible is myth. Some of it is oral history run amok. Some of it is biased by a priestly caste. Some of it is the work of fanatic zealots. Some of it is wishful thinking. Some of it is true and some of it is false.

True Christians neutral in War?
by Van Gogh intoday i re-established contact with an older true - friend who is still a jw.
in the fifty years that he has been baptized he invested a lot of time and effort in helping the needy and elderly, loyally taking up responsibilities in the org as an elder, organizer, speaker and shepherd.
he is still out there as a lowly publisher, tirelessly going from door to door with only his bible.

The ONLY redeeming value of Jehovah's Witnesses is that they follow the example of Jesus and claim citizenship in heaven and therefore will not actively engage in national killing sprees.
This forum with its perverted hatred of JW's is blind to that fact. Even JW's don't get it. Most of what Jehovah's Witnesses think is important like their arguments about holidays, the cross, blood transfusions are mostly sectarian games. The real deal is overcoming nationalism. The Bible is a story about transcending human selfishness. The selfishness of nations is an unecessary exaggeration of the selfishness that helped humans evolve in the first place.
The reason the Jewish zealots stoned Stephen is because he showed them how all the really important things in their history took place outside their beloved land and before it was their possession.
Nationalism is the greatest evil on earth. Even if we are destined to die because we are evolved animals - war robs us of our natural death. War makes widows and orphans. Traditionally a slave that follows the commands of his owner has a greater life expectancy than a soldier. A slave has value by surviving - a soldier will most certainly be killed - whoever lives by the sword dies by the sword.

What is the Future of the Watchtower Society?
by jwfacts inafter reading comments on this site for a while and looking at what happens to other religions i feel the watchtower society has a long future in front of it.
this is bad news all round, sad for us waiting for our families and sad for witnesses waiting for paradise.
the reason i say this is that any organisation with 6 million members, billions in assets and little to spend their money on would find it very hard to go out of existence.

I don't know if there is a flu going around but my hall was filled on the memorial and during the special talk - but lately they are using up a little more than half the seats. Six months ago you couldn't find any seats in the "choice" back rows. Now - no problem. Even if you come late a family of 4 can find seating in the back (on the sides).
I attend a white suburban hall. Perhaps the Spanish congregations make up for it.

6/6/6 months away, any ideas?
by alamb in.
june 6, 2006.. just thinking that this date won't roll around again in our lifetimes and it would be so fun to launch something on this date.
any ideas?

Terrorists look for just that kind of date to do their deeds.
Of course I'm not making any predictions. (Been there-done that).
It doesn't surprise me that more "seers" aren't predicting disaster.
One reason is that "prophets" want to be unique in their predictions. They want to be known for calling it based on their clever calculations and intriguing grasp of historical currents.
6-6-6 is too obvious. Anyone can claim they had a hunch.
But it wouldn't hurt to have a couple weeks supply of food and water on hand. In this world that's always a good idea.
