in the movie annie hall, written by woody allen, as a young boy, alvy's mother, takes him to see a doctor as he appears to be dealing with some kind of depression.
when the doctor asks alvy what's up, alvy explains that he just found out the universe is expanding, everything will spread out and go cold and die, therefore nothing he does matters, so he is not going to do anything anymore.
most people might see this as a joke, but i think woody is trying to make a serious point.. the point here is about meaning.
I wish I had time to properly discuss this, but in a nutshell, you are correct. There is no real meaning, no right or wrong, no good or evil.
On the path to Atheism this was probably the concept that I struggled with the most.
But, in the end I was raised and live in a society that places value on these concepts and imagine that these concepts are deeply ingrained in most Atheist,as they are in me.
So, when you say that from an Atheist point of view, people are worth no more than a dog turd, don't be surprised if you get a reaction.
Hopefully, I will have time to comment later.

hi there everyone, looking for some advice on helping my sister who is studying the bible with a jehovahs witnesses to escape.
shes been studying for over a year now and attends meetings occasionally.
i have been looking for a way to help her for a while now and the answer fell into my lap last week, during her study last week she mentioned that her son was going to a birthday party.
ED,
Is your sister aware that if she becomes a JW and her son needs a blood transfusion, she must refuse the procedure and let him die?
The Study Conductor has probably already warned your sister that her friends and family will be opposed to her studying and becoming a JW. Kind of a little mind trick to make your sister think that Satan is working to keep her from learning the truth and becoming a JW.

here's an article i was inspired to track down.. http://beta.in-mind.org/issue-9/embodied-persuasion-how-body-can-change-our-mind.
i know from other reading that we can lift our mood simply by smiling.
i got to thinking of the steady cues for conformity that new book studies are fed, to get them used to the uniformity to come.
That reminds me of a video I saw recently.

i have often wondered if there is any actual archealogical evidence that jesus existed other than the claims of the bible.. i don't want to go down the route of 'you can't prove he didn't exist' as this is tiresome.
or 'well pontius pilate existed we found a stone with his name on so it follows jesus existed!
' that won't cut it.
I’m a little surprised that no one has mentioned why some think that the bible itself leaves room for doubt for a historical Jesus.
I remember reading years ago that the writings of Paul (the earliest NT writer) never give any detail about the birth, life, ministry or death of Jesus. Any passage written by Paul that puts Jesus in any historical context is considered a later addition. It is also thought that the Gospels (written after Pauls writings) were an attempt to flesh out the historical story of Jesus.
The following is the first site I came across that gives a good introduction into this concept:
Jesus Myth - The Case Against Historical Christ

or so says ronald weinland;.
may 27, 2012april 29, 2012. as readers of this site know, may 27, 2012, is the time that i have stated as being the date jesus christ will return as king of kings over all government on this earth.
for such an event to come to pass, the trumpets of revelation must all sound, the united states and dollar collapse, the ten nations of europe arise to fulfill the final revival of the holy roman empire, and russia with china must unite against europe in wwiii.. .... http://www.ronaldweinland.com/.
I decided to check on my favorite prophet and see what he's been up to.
I checked his website and as predicted (sort of) I've found that he has followed the tradition of the Millerites and the Bible Students and changed his tune when the expected events did not occur. So, now the day of Christ's return is a literal year and we have to wait until next pentecost for him to actually return.
Enjoy the spirtual feast that this fruitcake presents here.

September 15, 2012
TIME HAS RUN OUT:
It is Sabbath morning as I begin to write this post, and I am struck by how quickly time has passed since my last post exactly three months ago. That post was entitled, “God’s Time.” Since God’s Church had been focused on May 27th to be the literal “day” of Christ’s return, that post stated: “…there was more to the meaning of this final day to which we had finally arrived. This literal day was the beginning of a final prophetic day.”
God’s Church believes that on May 27th God revealed we had entered the “day” of Christ’s return, but that it was a “prophetic day” which is a literal year in length, from God’s Holy Day of Pentecost of 2012 to Pentecost of 2013. We now have 35 weeks remaining before the coming of the King of kings to reign over all the nations of this world.
We are in the prophetic “Day of the Lord,” which is the transition of time where God will intervene in world affairs and prepare it for the return of His Son to establish His Government on this earth and bring an end to man’s self-rule that now has existed for 6,000 years. Mankind cannot successfully govern himself. No nation and no group of nations can deliver peace for this world.

Maisha,
Also in answer to your question:
which line do you feel is identical?
Lines 2 and 3 in the Watchtower image are identical to lines 4 and 5 in my image.
pseudo
Yea interesting, however it is NOT the same,, maybe my eyes are blurred?... which line do you feel is identical?.
i realise that is their intention to portray the ten commandments, however it does NOT match
therefore can anyone translate this?
Maisha,
I won’t attempt to translate it, because it would be very time consuming to acquire the knowledge required to properly do the job.
I will however attempt to show how the first line in the Watchtower image corresponds to the third line in my image and how both correspond to Modern Hebrew.
First, here is a side by side comparison of the first line in the Watchtower image, the third line in my image and the first line of an image depicting the Modern Hebrew version:
Now, using Wikipedia, here is the Modern Hebrew, the corresponding Paleo-Hebrew and the corresponding characters from the Watchtower image.
If you will notice, the main difference is that the fifth (right to left) character (Tsadi) in the Watchtower text is considerably different from the Paleo-Hebrew text. There are probably a couple of reasons for this difference.
1. The Watchtower made a mistake (which I highly doubt)
2. It is a variant of the letter Tsadi
3. It is a variant spelling for that particular Hebrew word
As far as I know, translation of ancient texts is not as an exact science as one would hope for. Just a quick glance at Wikipedia’s page on the Hebrew alphabet shows the stylistic variants for each letter. This combined with the various media and writers styles is going to result in some marked differences.
It is also interesting to note that the cursive form of Tsadi in Modern Hebrew is very close to the letter in question in the Watchtower image.

huibers, a christian, used books 6-9 of genesis as his inspiration, following the instructions god gives noah down to the last cubit.
translating to modern measurements, huibers came up with a vessel that works out to a whopping 427 feet (130 meters) long, 95 feet (29 meters) across and 75 feet (23 meters) high.
story here.. .
Obviously not something that Noah would have built.
