the award can be explained as it was decided: separate compensatory and punitive damages.
the punitive award is established in law to punish wrongdoing - here, the conscious disregard for others - and deter that conduct in the future.

updated at 3:20 p.m. et: in what both sides described as a momentous ruling, a jury in oakland, calif., has found that jehovahs witnesses was partly responsible for the alleged sexual abuse of a girl by one of its members and must pay her more than $20 million.. the alameda county superior court jury on thursday awarded $21 million in punitive damages to the plaintiff, who is now 26 years old.

Momentum Builds
by stuckinamovement inif possible it would be great to send a copy of the new "shepherding" book and the recent confidentiality letter to contacts in the media.
the society will try to paint this as an isolated case and that it is in no way related to their policies.
the documents mentioned above show that this is not the case.. what is next?

Living in the western "rich" world we are spoiled and don't understand harships! Agree?
by Witness 007 injust saw a documentary on bolivia how a woman gets up while it's dark, puts a barrel on her head and walks 10 miles to get water for the day from a filthy well we would not swim in!....thats what 1 billion or more people have to do everyday!
they also scavenge for a hand full of rice or dirty flour...meanwhile, i buy 4 litre "springwater" and run down to the supermarket to pick what fruit, vegetables, meat, i want to eat today.. our kids want nike shoes and ps 3 while there kids need food and medicine.....and clean water!
i jump in a nice car and complain about petrol prices, while they walk many miles a day to work and home......i think we are lucky but don't know it, just born on the good side of the world.. agree?.

I agree that those of us in the "western world" are spoiled and probably don't understand what life is like in the third world countries. I am also aware that there is poverty in this country. I believe that a lot of my (and your) tax dollars are sent to these other countries to help with the poverty. I may be mean but I feel that we should concentrate on those suffering from poverty in our own country. There have been times, when I was young, that I have come home to see the furniture company repossesing our furniture, our lights and telephone being cut off and our family not having enough food to eat. This was not because my father did not have a good job but because my father was a bad manager and had a girl friend on the side. My own young children got measels and chicken pox because my husband and I did not have the money for vaccinations for them. I know this may sound lame and petty to some of you, but they were hard times for me. There have been many times when I have sat down an cried because I did not know what I was going to do about paying the bills because my husband did not work and I had the whole responsibility for making sure we had enough money to eat and keep a roof over our heads. I know this doesn't compare to those poor people who don't have clean water or enough to eat. I work very hard to care for myself and I am not young. I know that I will have to work as long as my body can stand up to it. I hope that I last till the age of 75. I think those govenments of third world countries can do more to help their own people. Like some other poster said, I don't want our government to cause us here in our country to be poor like other countries due to Obama's bad judgments and spending. I always give items to goodwill, money to the Salvation Army and I have volunteered at food banks and cooked at places that feed the underprivilaged. I do what I can to help others.

Wife & I were Without Electricity for 6 Days - Empathize with 3rd World......
by flipper ina massive storm from alaska knocked the hell out of northern california , giving us a foot and a half of snow , snapping trees like matchsticks , crashing multiple electrical lines in the sierra mountains where we live.
knocking electric out for 6 days ( thus my dissapearing act from jwn for 6 days ) - we had a 90 ft. ponderosa pine tree ( 3ft, around ) crash on the lower end of our acre we live on .
it's still leaning on oak trees suspended in time.

My power goes off on occassion, I hate it. I have flashlights everywhere. I intend to get a generator as I also have a well and without electricty, everything goes. Glad you and your wife made it okay, wood stove is necessary where you live. Hurricans and storms are our problem in SE/USA.
