Seen this movie?
by bittersweet ini was just wondering if anyone here has ever seen the movie "the invention of lying".
if you haven't seen it it is basically about a guy who lives in a world where no one knows what a lie is.
when this mans mom is on her deathbed he tries to comfort her and makes up a story ( something no one else has the ability to do ) about a place like heaven where everyone will get to live in a mansion of their choosing.

People over hear this and believe he is a prophet so he starts making up a bunch of rules as to how you can make the man in the sky happy so everyone can have a mansion when they die. It's just a real funny movie as to how people come to believe what they believe and how it is all a bunch of bull.
It stars Ricky Gervais and Jennifer Garner. I liked it and thought I would recommend it. It's been out on video forquite a while.

Don't leave, its God's organization....
by dissed inrecently, i've been seeing this argument displayed here more frequently by those still believing jw's.. usually in reply to arguments they can not answer well, like 1914, generation(s), etc.... its almost like, they are are having serious doubts as well, but their fall back is, "but its god organization....where else would you go......don't leave, we are so close to the end".
as one recently shared their experience with a jc.
the elders, when feeling trapped on explanations, fell back to this defense.

for many it is still that nagging doubt, that fear, that what if it is true? Then where will they be at Armageddon? They are too afraid to leave. My husband says sometimes; "but what if they are right?" I just tell him well if that is the case I lived my life the way I wanted it and Jehovah can bring it on. I DON'T CARE.

why do ex-jw's talk so much....
by bittersweet inso my husband ( who is a baptised witness who no longer attends meetings and pretty much doesn't believe any more ) asked me last night why do so many ex-jw's feel the need to keep talking about the religion even when they have been out of it for years.
i told him that in my case i still talk about it because i feel i lost so much of my life to them and i am still upset about it.
also that many people have lost families and livlihoods, etc.

That okra sure looks good!
I think maybe the fact it isn't a big deal to my husband is that he still thinks some of it makes sense. How, I don't know, but to each his own. He was even an elder and all that nonsense. It's just my siblings and myself talk about it a lot and can't believe the crap that the society is still shoveling it's followers, and he just doesn't get why it bothers us so much. I told him that maybe becasue he was able to choose it rather than have it pushed on him growing up like we did is the difference. Of course then there are people who did choose it who are bitter once they relalize they wasted their life following lies. I guess maybe my husband feels there are better things for him to worry about and this isn't something he chooses to spend time on. I on the other hand feel differently.

Facebook is a menace to the fading JW! (and society in general)
by slimboyfat inmark zuckerberg says that the philosophy of facebook is that people only have one identity.
i think then it's fair to say he couldn't have had jws leading a double life in mind.. i was careful not to add any jws to my page, so i thought i should not have any problems.
i did however add friends and family, including family members who are former witnesses and some who are related to current witnesses.

I like Facebook but you do have to be careful. I once was friends with a cousin in another state and all the sudden she was no longer my friend. Then I heard thru the grapevine that she found out I was an apostate so she defriended me. I think it was because I was a fan of a page about a book that was written by an ex jw. Also I am friends with most of my family, half of which are disfellowshipped ( I am not official, just haven't been in over 10 years ) or dissasociated. My Mom who is a witness friended me a few weeks ago and I have ignored her friend request because then my siblings will feel funny about what they can put on my page. It can certainly be tricky, but I still like it because I can easily keep in touch with my family who live accross the country and in different time zones and it is hard to catch them on the phone becasue of busy schedules.

So my husband ( who is a baptised witness who no longer attends meetings and pretty much doesn't believe any more ) asked me last night why do so many ex-jw's feel the need to keep talking about the religion even when they have been out of it for years. I told him that in my case I still talk about it because I feel I lost so much of my life to them and I am still upset about it. Also that many people have lost families and livlihoods, etc. And many people still have family in that they wish they could get out. I was just wondering why many here still keep talking about it so many years later. I will pass it along to him so he gets a better understanding of why it has affected so many people so deeply.

Should Immigrants Be Made To Learn English If They're Living In The USA?

minimus are you in New Englad? Because I am in MA and I keep seeing some political ad from NH with some dude in a classroom talking about making everyone speak English. I can understand the frustration with expecting everyone here to speak English, after all it is the official language of our country. But to force? Some people are fleeing their country because of abuse and such. I don't feel it is up to us to force them in their already stressed out state to learn our language. Should they? Yes, I would suggest it. It would make their lives that much easier. Forced to by the government? Don't think so.

sad but true.
Witnesses always feel better by putting others down. God forbid you try to help those more unfortunate than yourself.

My friend and I were about 16 and were at a door that only had the screen door shut, so we could see right into the house. We kept knocking but there was no answer. We went to turn around and leave and heard a noise. We looked just in time to see a naked guy coming out of the bathroom. We kinda froze, as did he. Then he just bolted down the hallway. We got away from that door fast, lol.
Another time I was working with an elder and we were standing on steep stairs, with me a couple steps behind him. Unfortunately this put me at eye level with his backside. It looked as though he had sat in a pile of melted crayons because there was a huge multi-colored stain on his backside. I wasn't quite sure how to go about telling him that he had a huge stain on his butt. I didn't want him to think I made it a habit of staring at elders bums, but I couldn't let him keep walking around like that. Finally I just asked him if he sat in melted crayons and he asked why? I then proceeded to tell him about the stain, lol. I think he was glad I told him.
Another time I was working with a bunch of brothers and I went to get out of the car and my skirt split straight up the side, all the way to the waist. I had to borrow one of the brothers jackets to wrap around myself until they could drive me to my house to change! Seems wardrobe mishaps are my claim to fame in the field service stories!

How squeamish are you?
by Gregor inlets say you are enjoying a glass of good red wine while preparing dinner.
you pick up your glass for a sip and see a gnat floating on top.
1. pour the whole thing in the sink and pour a fresh one.. 2. pick out the gnat and drink the wine.. 3. ignore it and drink the wine and the gnat.. i am a 2. i have done a 3 and it didn't spoil my appetite.. .

I wouldn't be drinking red wine, but if it was a nice pinot or chardonnay I would be 2. Why waste a good glass of wine? I have picked fruit flies out of a glass and I am still living.
