I have to agree with Breeze about "Igby Goes Down".Great, quirky movie(my favorite kind),and great acting too. What is it with those Culkin kids?Funny how talent runs in families.Susan Sarandon and Ryan Phillepe were great too.
I'm still undecided about seeing The Ring....some say it's really scary and others say silly.

Wedding receptions -- weird JW ideas
by Gopher inhave a reputation for being immature and quick to take offense!
then you can find yourself invited to a jw wedding reception.
do you doubt this?
-
bittersweet
this is a great thread.Ever notice how all the elders were always invited to the receptions? I guess none of them were mature,eh?
When my husband and I got married,we had to have a brother "oversee"everything..like the music and all that good stuff. We had to go over the music we wanted to play.Anyway,we wanted to play a song by Madonna(a decent one mind you),and he said we couldn't because of her reputation.....lol....then one of the songs we wanted to play was "Earth Angel",and the brother said we couldn't play that song because it had the word angel in it,and it had the worlds viewpoint of what an angel was....lol.Funny thing though, when that brother got married(when he was an elder),he had some questionable music at his reception.
Out of curiosity, those of you that heard kindom songs at receptions....where was that?I never once heard kingdom songs at receptions...that would be too funny.

Did anyone really ever study?
by freedom96 ini know we were taught to study all the wts stuff.
prepare for each meeting, prepare for service, (gotta know the articles) etc.
i mean with all the personal study to do, how could anyone have time for newspapers, novels etc.
-
bittersweet
Depending how spiritual I felt at the time,I would either study really hard, looking up every scripture and writing them in the margins,or I would underline anything without reading the article so it would look like I studied.
All that studying was such a chore, and you were made to feel so guilty if you didn't study. The fact that it was all so boring certainly didn't help.I think the only time I ever even got the Watchtower read was during the Watchtower study on Sunday.I would be so bored going over the feature article again that I would read all the other pages in the Watchtower to keep myself from falling asleep.
No wonder they had such a hold over people....not a day could go by that you weren't studying or reading their propaganda!

I married a stranger, did you?
by kenpodragon inin my current life i know a lot of people who live together.
some of them might have done this because they do not like marriage, and others have done this as a step towards getting married.
in all, in my post-witness life i find that i have no problem with either view.

kenpo,
What a great thread. You are so fortunate that your wife felt the same way.I wish my husband would come around.I have been out for 4 years, but he's still going strong. It's tough when you have kids, and I have 3.He makes them go to most meetings and it makes me feel helpless.I usually don't say much because it causes a fight, and I had enough of that growing up.My husbands a good guy,we've been married 15 years,it's just that he's so blinded by the org.
Congrats on your soon to be new addition to your family.Kids are awesome....as much as they can bring frustration in your life, they bring you so much joy as well.Good luck to you and wife.
And to orangefatcat,I'm sorry you spent so much of your life in a crazy marriage. My mom married my stepfather after knowing him for 2 weeks. My mom had 4 kids at the time(ages 2,9,11,and 14),and he had 3(ages 1,5,and 7).His wife had died the year before during childbirth(bled to death),and all the sisters in the cong were tired of taking care of him and his kids,so they needed to find a wife for him.Since there were no takrs in his hall, they looked around til they found my mom.4 weeks after meeting, the wedding was held at the kingdom hall and that's when the craziness began. This man was an undiagnosed manic depressive bi-polar.He was abusive(obviously totally overwhelmed with this new situation,9 people under one roof, which happened to be a 3 bedroom ranch!),unpredictable, and made our lives a living hell.I can't tell you how many times the elders were at my house, telling my mom that she just had to be more submissive and everything would be fine.God forbid they thought the man needed professional help.My mom spent so many unhappy years with that man because of the elders(she finally divorced him after 16 years)......I will never forgive the elders for that....ever.I have a hard time forgiving my mom for what she put us through also, but she was just trying to be a good Jehovah's witness(which she still is,very devout).Everyone told her he was sooo wonderful, after all the poor man lost his wife.....so she belived them and didn't get to know him well first.Any way, that's part of my story, just wanted you to know I can understand a little. It's amazing how a person can trick so many people into thinking they're sane, but show their true colors at home.

Anyone know the Weight Watchers point system?
by LyinEyes ini seem to recall someone talking about having the list of points for the weight watchers point system diet.
my sister and some of her co workers are planning on going to a weight watchers free meeting.
i told her of course the will have you pay up , and it is not that expensive, but i told her i might can get the information from someone on the internet.

Weight Watchers is a great program...but as with any weight loss program, you have to stick with it...it really isn't a diet,it is a life change. You can't lose weight and then expect to go back to your old ways...then of course you will gain it back(and then some:) ).
I have been a lifetime member for 13 years, and I think part of the reason it works is the support you get.You meet people of all shapes and sizes, who are all in the same boat as you are. It's great that you will be doing it with people you know...that way you can exercise together, try out new recipes together and all that good stuff. And it helps if you treat yourself every once and a while too:)
Good luck....you can certainly e-mail me(it's in my profile)if you have any questions.I also subsribe on line,so if you need any recipes or anything I'd be glad to look them up for you.

this is in response to frogit. The reason a woman in these types of cases are treated differently is because they have been diagnosed as having postpartum depression(or probably postpartum psychosis in these instances).A man cannot have this,so obviously would be treated differently. If a woman kills her children and is not suffering from this, she obviously would be treated differently. There are many stories in the media to support this.
any way, what a sad story, but thank goodness she got help before she went any further in her plan.

Were You Obsessed With Demons?
by minimus infrom my youngest days, i remember being told that we should be careful because of the demons.
they are everywhere, just waiting to pounce on us.
we were told to stay away from windchimes since they "attract" the demons.
