I remember once when my sister lived in VA, I was at an assembly (teenager), and volunteered on the salad line to get out of a couple of talks (had to get ready for the rush, you know.)
I was reprimanded by a babyface MS for putting too much salad in the bowl. I said, well how much? He took the bowl and put in a couple of lettuce leaves, and said, "No more than that!!"
Pfft.

what i can't understand is new york is, to me, the archetype of independent thinking - individuality.

I'm from NYC and wondered the same thing myself. Of course, I'm guilty because I never go to the meetups, mostly because my BF never was a JW and wouldn't understand my abandoning him on a Saturday night (he wouldn't go.)
Originally from Staten Island, would pretty much kill to meet an ex-JW from Staten Island who could possibly fill me in on who may have left and who is still there that I would remember from 20+ years ago. Ironically, there is an active one here at work from S.I. that says hi to me even though I wear a cross, I remember her as being very pleasant and she still is, but I wouldn't have the nerve to sit down and ask her. I'm not up for an intervention.
I do enjoy flipping the bird at bethel whenever I drive across the Brooklyn Bridge. If I'm a passenger, I get to use both hands!

That was always the worst part of the memorial.... FOUR meetings in one week! Arrghhh...

those of you who are now x-jws, did you ever lead a double life while you were "in"?
did you have "worldly" friends, watch r rated movies, drive fast cars and do other things you weren't supposed to do, yet believed you were a "good" jw because you belived in the truth, "put in time", and attended meetings?
if you did, how long did it take you to see the truth about the truth and leave?
I did. I got caught too, smoking. I was turned in by a wannabee elder ministerial servant, then sob storied my way out of a judicial meeting and only had to meet with one Bethel-based elder privately, repent, and bring him home to my parents house for dinner. Then all was forgiven. It's amazing what a career Bethelite will do to enjoy an unrushed, friendly, home-cooked meal before the book study.
I actually liked that elder. He is dead now, but he was a good guy. I hope I see him again someday.

he hasn't posted since last june, i was wondering if anyone is still in contact with him.. his story really touched me... i'm so glad he got his babies back from those jw grandparents.
i was just wondering how they all were doing..

It's just that of all the stories I've read, there was something about his that really resonated. I am so glad he won, in so many other cases the grandparents would have won.
I just finished a grad term paper on court cases where religion was a factor in custody battles, and I got an eye opener of how the courts will protect the jw's freedom to the exclusion of the child's welfare. It was, actually, quite sickening, so when I see people like Larry win, I'm glad.
