One of the most important, perhaps the most important skill one derives from a university education is the ability to think critically. This is entirely absent from the residents of Planet Watchtower.

Nourishment for the Spirit
by Maximus inmy observation is that persons who 1) heal/adjust the most rapidly from their jw experience and 2) seem to have the most joy in life are those who read, read, read, in pursuit of what i call nourishment for the spirit.
i've really enjoy the pithy aphorisms you use here, which suggests you've distilled some wisdom from somewhere.
i'm going to ask your help in this thread.

I can't recommend Barbara Tuchman enough! Her scholarship was outstanding but her work was easy for the layman to read. I recently re-read "The Guns of August." They say that the Kennedy brothers had just read this book prior to the Cuban Missle Crisis. Supposedly this was one of the things that influenced their non-sabre-rattling approach to this situation.

I recommend two books:
1. "A Distant Mirror" by Barbara Tuchman. This book shows that man has long thought that his specific time was the "time of the end." It is an eye-opener for anyone whose historical knowledge has come from WT publications. Reading this book was the final straw that broke the camel's back for me as regards 1914 and all that other last days stuff.
2. "1984" by George Orwell. I read this in my junior year of college in 1984. No way I could go throught that year and not read that book. Having been raised a JW it was hard for me to fully reject the WT. It took years to do and passed through many phases. Oceania proved to be a chilling parallel to life on Planet Watchtower. -

Wondering whether or not to join the Air Force
by Patrick_Ryan ini'm new here and i have some questions about joining the air force or not.
i'm 21 years old, i was raised as a jehovah's witness but stopped going when i was 13 because i was a kid and thought it was boring (like school).
even after i quit going i still done things that were right or i tried to still live by what i was taught and i'm greatful that i was raised that way because it kept me out of a lot of trouble and made me who i am today.

Patrick, two points:
1. The first Gentile to become a Christian was named Cornelius. He was an officer in the Roman Army. You can read his account in Acts chapter 10. Read the account carefully. Notice that nowhere is he told by the Apostle Peter that he was wrong to be an army officer, or that he must resign his commission.
2. Secondly, if you believe that we are in the "last days" as the WT would scare you into believing, go to your local library and check out a book called "A Distant Mirror" by Barbara Tuchman. Tuchman was one of the great historians of the twentieth century. I'm not going to spoil things for you by telling you what the book is about, but suffice to say after I read it in 1979 I no longer believed the WT talk of the "last days." -

Jehovah, and Watchtower Dishonesty
by Maximus inhere's another example of how the society uses selective quotations.
(see the thread blood, the watchtower and deceit for two other examples, carefully documented.
under the title "is it wrong to pronounce gods name?

I will never forget Dr. Mantey's letter as it was the first piece of evidence that made me realize WT dishonesty. It was shown to me in early 1976 by a young San Diego State University student named David Tidd. David was a young Christian man who had started "studying" with one of our elders. This elder couldn't cope with David's questions so he turned the "study" over to me (the young pioneer). I didn't study with David, he studyed with me. I didn't convert him to the WT, but he started the process that eventually led me to Christianity. God bless you David, twenty-five years later!

Awake exploits family tragedy ....
by dedalus inby now most here have read the terrible story of a pregnant witness, theresa giarrano, who was murdered for her unborn child.
the story appeared in vogue magazine shortly after the events took place; it is only now, 10 months later, that the awake (july 22, 2001 issue) has published anything about this tragedy.
though the story is "as told by" theresa's father, james giarrano, it is such a twisted piece of exploitation that i can only believe a ghost writer or collaborator is behind it.

I agree with Larc's description of the JW funeral. When my JW father died my wife was quite surprised by the nature of the funeral service. She described it to her friends as a "Watchtower infomercial." Probably no more than two or three minutes were spent on the deceased. The remaining 45 minutes was a rehash of WT doctrine and a recruiting pitch for those of us "worldlings" in the audience.

Electromagnetic Pulse Weaponry
by You Know injust a friendly reminder, that on any given day, merely one large mega-ton nuclear device exploded high in the atmosphere over the united states, could fry virtually every "unhardened" electrical device in the entire nation.
numerous prophecies speak about the fall of the oddly yoked anglo-american dyad.
the only thing at this point that remains unclear is exactly when the downfall will occur and how it will come about.

I believe in EMP...
I'm not so sure I believe in your theories about "King of the North"
Wasn't he Kaiser Wilhelm II?
Didn't President Wilson teach him a lesson in 1918?
Hasn't he been dead since 1941?
