the new testament states that a warrant was issued for the arrest of jesus and that judas was the man that turned him in.. this warrant would have carried a description of the man that called himself the king of the jews, however this description did not find it's way into the bible.. this seem's a bit odd in particular since after all it would be interesting to know what the messiah really looked like.. i mean, think about it, if you had the chance to record the events of a man of such importance would you not include a description of his image?.
the appearance of jesus has been a subject of disscusion amongst many jw's (and other christians aswell i'm sure) and i remember many such occassions when the topic was being discussed and needles to say the opinions on this matter differed greatly.. the one opinion however that usually prevailed was that of a strong well built man, after all he was a carpenter etc.... as i said there is no such description in the bible, however, it was reported by josephus in his "capture of jerusalem".. now, i don't know whether this report is a genuine one or not, maybe jh can throw some light on that, but a copy of josephus description has survived in slavonic texts and it paints a picture quite at odds with the image many people have painted for themselves:.
'...a man of simple appearance, mature age, dark skin, small stature, three cubits high, hunchbacked with a long face, long nose, and meeting eyebrows, so that they who see him might be affrighted, with scanty hair with a parting in the middle of his head, after the manner of the nazarites, and with an undeveloped beard.'.
Have any of you ever read "The Day Christ Was Born" and "The Day Christ Died" by Jim Bishop? They are two best-sellers, combined into one book. An excellent read.
"DCD" is very detailed about Jerusalem and the surrounding areas during the ministry of Jesus. It also explains the relationship between the Romans and the high-ranking Jews, the relationships between Jesus and his apostles, the personalities of the apostles... granted, Bishop is relying on the authenticity of the period writings, and filling in the blanks, but it's an interesting read nonetheless.
... I'm not finished with it yet,(I just got "In Search of Christian Freedom" so that's taking up most of my reading time) but I will soon.
i can't reply to the original thread, but maybe starting a new one will work.. knows what, "well i suwannee !!
it means "i'll swear," and the quote is incorrect.
it's actually, "i'll swannee," or "i'll swan.
How 'bout this one...
"Slicker than deer guts on a doorknob."
A transplant from Georgia taught me that one. I nearly peed my pants the first time I heard it.

i'm just wondering if when anyone else hears people (jw's) say "well we must be living in the last days because look how awful the world is, look how awful people are to each other, look at the earthquakes, etc, etc, etc" that is doesn't really seem to make sense?
i mean look at the old testament.
i don't think people could be any crappier to each other than the examples put forth there!
thanks to communication (Satellites, TV, Radio, 24 hour news channels, etc.) We just hear about everything that happens around the world all at once
BW, I think you answered your own question. I agree, things aren't necessarily worse, it's just that we get the news instantaneously. Wars, earthquakes, etc. have been happening for millions of years, we just know about them right away.
As to people being more evil, I say absolutely... kids are watching to much damn television!

for the majority of humans, certain events are surrounded by tradition and ritual.
marriage, the birth of children, entrance into adulthood, and death are all life-events which will be marked by most with a form of religious ceremony.
for the few who have left off affiliation with a religious organization, these events are marked differently - more by tradition than by mystic ritual.
wasa: EXACTLY!!
My parents recently made arrangements in case they are in an accident, one of them dies, etc. (Dad the PO and Mom the Reg. Pioneer). Of course, my younger, less-capable, less-intelligent sister will be responsible for raising my youngest sister and brother (who are both under 17) since she & her husband will raise the kids "in 'The Truth.'" I will, most likely, be called upon to render monetary support, which is no big deal, but it's just the idea.
Actually, I'm glad that they've made effort to make sure that the youngsters will be taken care of in case of DBFS ("death by field service.")
Sorry, I know it's morbid, but I'm just in a mood today...

i was just kinda curious about something.... i've seen a few chatrooms hosted by jw's inviting interested persons to ask questions (as long as they are not too probing or you detect a distinct rise in blood pressure but thats another subject) and i just wondered if these hammer-wielding witnesses count their time and put it in their monthly report.. maybe they keep a record of curious guests and count each time they pop in for a chat as a return visit.. in these modern times is there a section on the report sheet for internet interest or cyberspace studies?.
could a e-mailing of an article count as a placement?.
oh when i think of those hours i spent pioneering in the cold and wet knocking on doors with housewives crouching behind the sofa with their hands over kids mouths.... can you imagine futuristic talks on the platform in the ministry school with instructions on effective arguments to use on pc-holders with a couple of zealous elderly sisters huddled over lap top computers with techno-terror on their faces?.
I bet Fred and You Know (Nothing) are counting their time as they slop around in here with us aposties. Another reason I will not engage either one in convo.

some times the watchtower magazine really comes up with some really hilarious articles.
when describing competing crackpot cults they often in a very accurate way describe themselves.
just look at this little gem about the moonies: .
It's truly amazing that they hold the mirror up for all to check their reflections, but won't look into that mirror themselves.

has anyone on this board ever experienced contact with demons?.
i have heard demons talked about for years, however i have never known anyone that has had any real experiences with them, i have only heard storys.. .
(some quotes).
When I was about 14, recently baptized and a new auxillary pioneer, I went out in service with a few girls from my hall. One of the women with us was a demon freak... she was "sensitive" to things "posessed by the demons." She'd had a pillow that "talked" to her son, telling him to commit suicide, and she attempted to burn it, but "it wouldn't burn." (All of this is in quotes b/c I don't know for sure if it happened, b/c I wasn't there. I called her Sister Exorcist behind her back.)
Anyway, we stopped at one of the girls' houses to use the bathroom (her mom is a pioneer, her dad an elder). Jes had recently started associating again; she'd been hanging around a girl who whose family were JWs, but the girl started getting into witchcraft, drugs, etc. We'd been talking in the cargroup about experiences that Sister Exorcist had had "getting rid of the demons." She told how she's walked into people's houses, holding her Bible, saying prayers out loud... oh yeah. She was a peach to take on return visits.
We were standing in Jes' bedroom and I started hyperventilating. Freaking out, crying, screaming... I had a panic attack. Well, Sister Exorcist starts walking around her room, throwing things away, praying out loud... it was a scene.
Jes found some of her friend's withcraft magazines and marijuana stuffed behind her waterbed. Which validated this whole thing in Sister Exorcist's eyes.
I don't know what it was, but part of me thinks that I just got scared from all the "demon talk." After all, I was only 14. I do believe that the demons can affect people; I just don't know why they'd want to waste their time on me.
"I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul."
youknow, the internet's a funny place.
i sometimes come across tiny christian message boards, usually maned by some poor, pimple-faced baptist lad doing his bit to save us heathens from the confines his bedroom and bible plagued imagination.
