i decided to make a new post to deal with these related but different issues.. first, the purpose of the post was not so much about rushing to judgment, but to show that the process is flawed, and the reflective question at the end shows that i was disturbed as to why we allowed these events to develop the way we do, especially over matters that really are not all that serious.. second, your follow-up comments also bring out some good additional concerns.
i will address those that seem to be of greatest concern.
...And of *course* I live in Northeastern Ohio! Actually, I was just up in the Niagara Falls area last week, which was a nice trip. Unfortunately, the rest of this month is no good for travel...

this is completely unrelated to jw, but i would like to garner some opinions on this.... i was raised to call adults in the congregation "brother" and "sister.
" non-jw adults were mr. or mrs. unless they advised me to call them by their first names.. we have a neighbor who allows her 3 and 4 year old sons to call my husband and i by our first names.
my husband corrected one of the boys in front of his father, telling him, "please call me mr.
I appreciate all of the comments so far; I'd like to think that I'm a *little* more open-minded than I used to be as a JW...
This is just one of those things, small as it may seem, that is important to me.
It irritates me when I go to a restaurant and see young kids (or younger adults) waiting in every available chair while older or handicapped people stand. Or men/boys who don't hold the door for their wives/daughters/sisters. My Dad had never held a door for my mother in his LIFE until he saw my husband do it everywhere for my mother and I. Now he does it regularly. Someone just needed to show him.
I let older people go ahead of me in the grocery -- even when they're cranky and don't say thank you and smell like cat pee. I do it because it's right. And there are times in traffic when I say, "yeah, you're welcome asshole" when I've let some nimrod merge, but I don't do it for the appreciation (if I crave appreciation, I'll never become a parent) I do it because it's the right thing to do.
I'm slightly surprised that this isn't an issue of bigger import, but then, I'm not really surprised. It isn't a big deal, but it is ---> the Bigger Picture.

it seems like to me the majority of people who are in the truth, are were in the truth was a result of either a family member are a friend witnessing to them and not many seem to have been found in the door to door work.. from my years of associating with the borg i cannot recall many coming in the truth from the door to door work.. how were you sucked in?
for me it was my aunt who has now even though i am not disfellowshipped decided to write me out of her will to the tune of about $150,000.00 (maybe i should hang around a couple more years)dont think i will.. please respond .

My Aunt (my sister's mother) met a JW, started dating, soon became one. Started studying with my Mom, who in turn dragged my Dad in (by the balls, might I add) and raised all of us kids in it.
Of my aunt's children, one was DFed, one married at 18 and divorced last year (husband finally "came out" to her. I mean, did everyone *else* in the world know he was gay except her?!) the others are too young yet.
I'm the only one of my sibs who has left ---> YET!

I am not a member of any religion at all. I cannot accept all of the Bible as literal or necessarily inspired.
I went to Mass a few times with my husband’s family (couldn’t get past the transubstantiation), tried out a non-denominational Christian Church (one step up from the Unitarian Universalists in the wishy-washy factor) and sat through an Episcopalian service (gossip-factor appeared to be more motivation than God for a lot of the parishioners). I can’t get comfortable with a church though I’ve tried. I’ve stopped trying. My relationship with God is not dependent on what church I attend or how often. I need my sisters-in-law (“RC” stands for “Raging Catholic” in my extended family) to accept this and stop trying to convert me.
I have a tough time accepting Adam & Eve and Noah’s Ark as true historical fact. I have become an Evolutionist in that I believe that God used the evolutionary process to achieve completion of the universe. I’m still developing my belief system on this issue.
I cannot equate God with Jehovah. The name Jehovah turns my stomach.
If I ever get the opportunity to meet any that I participated in DFing, whether I was in error or not, I will apoligize and try to make it up in some way.
One elder that sat on my JC and was ultimately responsible for DFing me apologizes to my mother and asks after me every time he sees her. I think it’s motivated by guilt (he later admitted that the DFing was wrong). The only solace for me is that he has stepped down (aside?) as an elder recently and no longer exerts the control over the cong that he once did. Unfortunately, Dad is now the PO and has that control. My father was always much more kind and loving with the members of the congregation than he was with the members of his own family. I hope for their sake that he continues to be that way.
I do not have to sit on these forums and expose anything, or expend considerable time, or engage in helping to expose the pedophile issue

I am amazed at (no pun intended, I promise!) and very grateful for the amount of time and effort that you put into your posts. You’ve provided me with much food for thought. Your research has prompted me to delve deeper into the JW doctrine and decide for *myself* why I’ve come out – and plan to stay away.

with the news that the killers of jamie bulger have been released, it would be interesting to know how people feel.. from the mcveigh thread it seems that many americans believe the death penalty would have been appropriate.. i do not know whether many in the us know of the case in britain of a 2 year old being tortured and murdered by two 10 year olds.
but now 8 years later they have been released.. i know of the arguments that they have been rehabilitated since killing jamie bulger.....but is this really justice?
They will live in fear of anyone uncovering their identities.
Good. They should suffer every day for the rest of their (hopefully) very short lives, just as that child suffered, and just as his parents continue to suffer every single day.
Jan, I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your grandchild. If I had my way, first offense drunk driving would be charged as felony assault with a deadly weapon, minimum sentence of 3 years in prison. There is no excuse for such irresponsiblity. I've known too many people who have lost loved ones to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th+ time offenders.
I absolutely cannot feel any sympathy for these two monsters. I hope they can never sleep again, from fear and loathing.

We now ignore the children when they call us by their first names, but it's obviously not "getting through." I want to write Ann Landers, see if she'll post the letter, and then surreptitiously mail it to my neighbor to see if she "gets the hint."

the typical jw response is to always direct the problems identified to some individual or to some local problems not common among other jws.

She states that she is not a Witless, yet when open_mind asked a question of her and/or Fred on another thread, she certainly replied. I want to know, if she *isn't* a Witless, how can she speak so authoritatively on JW doctrine?
Just like a Witless, unable to respond to the "meaty" issues. Can't stomach more than the curdled milk that they're fed.
She's certainly on her way, dodging questions as she has.

Funny... we used to go to Pittsburg @ Three-Rivers, and the Elderberries were always reminding us "young ones" to be mindful of the "program" and not be so concerned with the socialization. One brother stated from the platform that he was tired of seeing all of the teenagers at "Gate A" which is where everyone between the ages of 15 and 25 met to scope out mates (or, "cut one from the herd," as my dad used to say).
I remember seeing girls in slightly too-short or too-tight dresses, overly made up faces & hair, with their phone numbers written in HUGE BLOCK LETTERS on their name badges. It was such a joke. I would have young brothers following me around, trying to find out from my friends which congregation I attended... one young brother got up in the middle of a session to bring me over his suit coat b/c I was cold. Dad didn't think that was as chivalrous as the young man did, and the poor kid got the evil eye...
