Birthdays are Evil - so they said
by EverApostate inlast week i celebrated my birthday.
accepted well wishes from people near and far.
had been happily accepting wishes from people since i quit the cult.. as a jw, (brainwashed ) belief that birthdays are evil was the stupidest belief i had in all my life.. when in, i had a hard time to explain to people that i don’t celebrate birthdays.

My grandfather is a longtime JW with advanced Parkinson's. On the advice of a good friend mine who is inactive but not "out" I went to visit him Monday and we talked for awhile. His health isn't well, but he was happy to see me. He seemed almost... proud of me for going to college and trying to do something useful with my life. As I was leaving I asked if I could bring a chess board by in a couple days and we could have a game. (He's always loved chess and used to play on a club in high school.) He seemed to be aware that I was disfellowshipped but wanted me to come anyway.
So I went back Wednesday and we played a bit, he's still pretty good for someone with dementia, though he did get confused on the pieces a few times. Things were going well, until my sister walked in, she didn't say anything just gave me a dark look and stormed out. I recall hearing the word "chess" come from the other room where she went to talk to my nuna (grandma). Anyway I didn't let her phase me and just finished my game with him, it was nice getting to see him again. As I was packing up the board he told me to come back again, but when I walked back through the house and said goodbye to my nuna, she asked that I not come to "play a game" with him again because she didn't think grandpa was fully cognizant and didn't want to "offend Jehovah."
I just wish my family could see how fucked up it is to worship a god that would be "offended" by a grandson spending quality time with his dying grandfather while he still could.

I personally think it's fairly probable that alien lifeforms exist, even somewhat probable that alien lifeforms exist which would meet our definition of "intelligent." Hell, it's even possible (I put the probability around 1%-3%) that some alien abduction stories are real, granted there are a great many explanations that are far more likely and would need to ruled out before I took such a claim seriously.

You Just Can't Make This S--t Up!
by FedUpJW ini know this is kind of trivial but i don’t want to partake in something that might have connections with something that jehovah disapproves of.
i checked the watchtower library and i didn’t find anything on gingerbread man cookies.. .
good lord...how incredibly stupid and helpless are jdubs getting?

Quod Erat Demonstrandum, Ipso Facto, E Pluribus Unum, and Mea Culpa
Watch it with all that fancy Latin, might make a JW faint if they stumble across it.
I just checked it out and there is THREE pages of back and forth discussion about whether it is permitted for a JDub to eat a gingerbread man. Don't those bone-heads have something better to do...like maybe door knocking, or cart sitting or something?
Try looking up the topic of beards on that website sometime, it's ridiculous. So many of them want one but won't grow it because of the stupid unwritten rules on the subject.

Bitcoins: A new world without green backs.
by Fisherman inthe us army backs up the green back and saudi's oil must be paid in dollars so that every nation that uses oil must buy money from the us to pay for oil.. is it advantageous to print money or is digital money the upcoming economy?.
also, are bitcoins legal?
i read that market for them is soaring.

Well, the internet isn’t a sovereign nation so I don’t think anyone has the jurisdiction to enforce a currency standard for the internet, so as far as I know it isn’t legal. However, as with all currencies, the only thing that gives its value is the social construct that we’ve all agreed to assign it some value.

Implications of gender and racial imbalance in JW population.
by doubtfull1799 inthis was inspired by a recent post by nike and the comments that followed re gender balance in the org.
if jw's accept the concept that the gb continue to push - that people only become believers if they are "rightly disposed" and are thereby "drawn by god.".
then given the huge gender imbalance and also the huge differences in percentages of jw in some lands vss others only two things can possible follow from that:.

Yeah, I could never really reconcile the whole “god draws those with the right heart condition” to anything that made logical sense. -

CLAM MEETING Dumbing down
by freddo inso yesterday was the midweek meeting - the first of the month for december so instead of locals doing the little talk skits we get the on screen shadow puppets.. after each one the ms taking the item asks the congregation for "positive" comments.. part way through i get a text from a pimo brother enduring the show which reads thus (and i quote word for word ...).
"it's like listening to a bunch of people from a mental institution.
".

I went to them for about six months before I got out. Half of it is tedious videos and a a portion of those are literally cartoons for children. (Often with sexist/homophobic/xenophobic overtones)

Does "Hanlon's Razor" apply to the Governing Body?
by stuckinarut2 ini recently learned of the term "hanlon's razor".. wikipedia defines it as: .
hanlon's razor is an aphorism expressed in various ways including "never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.
" it recommends a way of eliminating unlikely explanations for a phenomenon (a philosophical razor).. so could it be said that this applies to the gb / society ?.

Most definitely, my best friend in the world is my female roommate (scandalous I know), I've wished many people a "Happy Birthday," and will soon be wishing them "Merry Christmas" as I celebrate these things for the first time in my life.
