I've reference martini in this forum before, and I assure you I did not mean to be derogatory to him in any way, except to emphasize he was a catholic monk, and the witnesses of course like to bash Catholics, so that is probably the explanation for why they have never acknowledged his contributions to the name they worship. They like to pretend like the pronunciation/spelling of the name came out of thin air rather than give credit to a monk.

Why using Jehovah for God's name is as good as using Yahweh
by oppostate inin another thread i wrote some notes about why using jehovah in english is as good as using yahweh.
i'm starting a discussion on this topic because it sounds quite ignorant to hear people talk of the monk who started using it in latin without really understanding why the monk did so.. the spanish dominican monk, raymundus martini, in 1270, didn't get hoodwinked by an old jewish superstition about pronouncing the divine name with the vowel points of another word.. 1. first the vowel points of adonay and jehovah cannot be the same for grammatical reasons.
you just can't use the same vowel points because some vowels aren't paired with some consonants in pronouncing hebrew words.

He 'goes about like a roaring lion.' But the scripture doesn't say laughing lion. I mean this is just nuts.

A difficult yet necessary decision
by Brother Jeramy inthe past five weeks have been perhaps the most painful in my life as a witness.. some months ago a young man (i'd say in his late thirties or early forties) began attending meetings at my kingdom hall.
he had just moved to my area from another state.
he had disassociated himself from his home congregation many years back, when he was 20 years old and going through many of the typical trials and temptations most young men experience.. two of the elders met with him initially, and they later shared the details with the body of elders.

This is huge for you. I remember, you tried very hard to affect change from the inside.
Good for you for taking a stand.
Everything is wrong with way they go about doing things. You are correct, it is not biblical, it is not Christian.
i wish you the best, Jeramy. I hope you find peace.

I don't think the semi colon is clear enough for what you're trying to convey. It reads like 'millions now living SEMICOLON.'

That’s What Happens When You Leave the Truth.
by John Aquila init never failed, when someone got disfellowshipped or left the organization, their life became shambles.
if married, a divorce ensued.
if the person had a great job, the company would lay-off or close.

John your story sounds very similar to a good friend of mine's story. Her life was such a mess and she was so unhappy as a witness, trying to please everyone. She was a true believer but got in trouble with a worldly guy. She saw the elders for what they were, and was traumatized by their questions in the back room. She decided not to come back. She married the guy moved on from the WT and has a completely beautiful life now. She's no longer jealous and bitter. She's self confident and sweet and caring. I can not BELIEVE the transformation. She is the best mother I've ever seen, and her husband is the best husband. Shoot, actually I just realized I could also be talking about this OTHER ex witness woman I know too. She also was terribly unhappy, pinched, frustrated. She went through a hard, brief witness marriage and decided to leave. Married a worldly guy, has two amazing children. Is Girl Scout troop leader, PTA president etc. the transformation in her is also amazing! Smiles are wide, eyes sincere. I've been to my high school reunions and people are remarkably the same over time. The real changes I've seen is the happiness levels when witnesses become ex witnesses!! Maybe that's the real reason you're not supposed to talk to them, the GB wants to perpetuate the myth that lives fall apart. -

How are the JW's reacting to the new USA gay marriage laws?
by purrpurr inpersonally i think this is wonderful.
i have nothing against gay people and wish them only the best.. but of course i'm in a minority of one, the jw's around me are posting away on fb the most homophobic vitriol imaginable.
a lot of them are even saying that it's the start to armageddon!!.

The one thing that bothers me of those two pictures is the woman's ears. I can't wait for that trend to be over. She's going to want to have reconstructive surgery someday. -

I was thinking about this a couple days ago. Siblings grow up together, see eachother every single day, are in each others space. But so often they end up living in very different places, seeing eachother once a decade. It's a fact of life, but it's a sad thing. i have lots of kids and the thought they they will live far apart from eachother some day makes me so melancholy.
I am really sorry for your loss. It must feel so strange. Sort of like a part of you is gone.
I just saw Inside/Out and cried 4 times. A kids movie is not supposed to be that sad!! And now you've got me crying again.
