Yes hope and faith are different in the way that hope is binary either ones or zeros. You either have hope or you don’t. Atheists don’t have hope in the Bibles promises of something better but agnostics and theists do.

by Teddnzo ineven elders can be part of the new jw lite brigade these days.
they don’t need to go on door to door anymore and there is no requirement for anything really.. taking meeting parts is all dead easy you could turn up on the day with zero preparation because it’s all in the meeting workbook.. quarterly elders meetings are just old men having a good old natter just like old men do down the pub.. congregations could be likened to pubs or bars these days just without the drinks, those come at other times.. no need for territory maps, these almost went away with covid letter writing now they are extremely slow getting finished as those who still go door to door only do ten mins.. you could even voice your questions these days about things the gb say and then just say “we can’t be dogmatic we just don’t know”.
i predict they will say this about 1914 soon..

Faith on the other hand could be measured on a scale of 1-100. Atheists have zero faith in the Bible so no hope. Theists can be up near 100 while agnostics maybe down near to zero the size Jesus mustard grain but they both have hope.Pascal’s wager is basically saying it’s better to have faith the size of a mustard grain and therefore hope than to have none.If you visit someone on the dying bed or someone who has just lost loved ones, you can hold their hand and tell them about the Biblical promises like in this Rev21:3,4, and even if you are nearer to zero on the scale it’s still a hope.Even if it is placebo it’s still a help. The thing about placebo is that believing it helps is actually helping. So to say it actually does no good whatsoever is not accurate as it does do some good as long as you have hope. -

I tend to feel like a lot of non-hardcore Christians do, at least what I perceive them to, that Christ makes amends where we come up short, and that faith in Christ goes a long way
-
Yes that faith goes a long way. But here is my question? Is ignorance bliss? Can a placebo work if you are truly not sure if it maybe just placebo?
Could you have the view that maybe the Bibles promises are correct and having faith and hope in the POSSIBILITY of the Bible being right, will this help?
If a doctor gives a placebo to a critical thinker, and this patient is not sure if it’s just placebo. But the doctor was very convincing that this medication will help. If the patient has the view that maybe it’s placebo but maybe not will it still help?

“With so many religions and religious denominations --many which demand exclusive and rigid devotion-- the odds are that most people will fall short.”
One real problem for all PIMIs is that they have been brainwashed to feel guilty about absolutely everything. They have been programmed to go tell the elders about everything they may feel guilty about.
Many feel guilty they are not doing enough ministry or due to what the GB say they just feel they should be doing more study or doing more in the congregation. They feel guilty they watch slightly inappropriate entertainment. This eats away at them and it’s very detrimental to their physical and mental health that they just can’t live upto the ideal that the GB have put out there.
I know of at least a few brothers who viewed porn and the guilt was eating them up. They had to go tell the elders. It’s often sexual repression and it leads to other problems.
But when you think about it porn and masterbation is very common and not that bad, certainly not bad enough to have guilt eating away at you. Some experts say it’s ok to release tension rather than have repressed feelings building up inside you.
Maybe JWLITE would be an absolute saviour for some who wake up to the fact that the GB are misguided and are wrong about many things. JWLITE means you do have to keep somethings to yourself and certainly not go tell the elders about every questionable thing you do or view in your own personal privacy.
No more having guilt eating away at you.
I know this would help

Pornography in the Marriage
by LostintheFog1999 inthe magazine that they are studying in the congregation this month has an article at the back about how pornography in a marriage could damage the relationship.. there's one piece of advice that sounds rather scary, the wt suggests that the couple should "consider asking an elder with whom you are both comfortable to sit in and guide your discussions for a time.".
how many of you would want an elder present in your home while you and your partner discussed your personal sexual cravings and the type of porn videos being watched?.

How would you know if you are deliberately lying to yourself? You would not know.
isn’t the chance as origin of life theory that it’s survival of the fittest? So if you can try to get away with things that may be considered crimes or immoral then there is nobody like God to care?
I wonder how it compares emotionally someone going from atheist to design theory compared to someone who was a theist to believer in chance theory?

problem for me is i'm not agnostic--i'm atheist. To me its a case of " in the beginning man made god"
What are the advantages of being atheist? I suppose if you genuinely believe the origin of everything was just chance then everything has no purpose it’s all meaningless. You don’t have to feel guilty about hurting others or doing anything wrong according to the Bible. Everyone just does eventually and that’s all there is to it, no hope for the future at all.
Maybe this is all true but I don’t see any advantage to believing in possibilities of intelligent design behind it all.
To keep the possibility there that there is something more to it than just change is more advantageous to me.

Investment departments in Bethel
by Mikejw ini was a bethelite in london for many years then got reassigned to the field and then went on brd from the start of chelmsford right upto covid.. during my years at the branch i was sometimes asked to be on a team who went to homes donated to the branch when some older one died.. this happenes an awful lot, everything is left to the branch in the will.
the unbelieving family is furious they didn’t get left anything and sometimes they tried to get their elderly relatives possessions and there was a legal battle .
but in the end a team of us would go and empty the property and another team would clean it up and put it on the market to sell it for the worldwide work.. all the possessions were sorted into trash or possibly valuable .

Yes there seems to be an attitude that the young bethelites work hard and do things by the book and the older ones can sit back and different rules apply.
they all had investments and read Financial Times.
Peter Bullock was the go to guy about investment. Many were buying gold and silver from ‘him’ I say him but I mean donated bullion in the vault when some older Jw died.
I myself got taken along with all the talk that silver bullion was undervalued and now is the time to buy. I went to the vault to ask what silver was available and how much.
He had a couple of monster boxes (500) of US silver eagles that someone had left in their Will. Brothers were buying tubes of 20 coins for about $20 each Troy ounce. The talk around morning worship tables was that silver would double in price
This was after 2008 GFC. Then I remember 2011 price of silver went over $50 and loads of brothers went back to Peter to sell for double the price. He went and sold loads of gold and silver to the Jewish family who incidentally were the ones who bought all of London Watchtower buildings.
I asked Peter was it his decision to sell loads of the gold and silver in 2011, he said he makes suggestions and then the top brass get back to him.
Many brothers sold gold for $2000oz and Silver for $50oz on Peters suggestion
