by Kenneson ineugenie scott of the national center for science education has written a retraction, after being slapped with a libel suit.
she wrongly accused roseville, california attorney larry caldwell of presenting for adoption to the school board two books on young-earth creation, one (get this!

Hey Thom,
A lot of that is just classic psychology. In particular, it is a well known phenomenon that we humans forget misses and remember hits. It's just in our nature.
So you probably think about your girlfriend a lot before you pick up the phone, but it only makes a solid memory when she calls at the same time. Of course there is no reason for your brain to try and remember all of the other times nothing happens. So it comes down to coincidence that is bound to happen with the number of times we use the phone along with the number of times we think of our loved ones.
This is one of those classic phenomena that are explained in some good books on critical thinking, such as "Demon Haunted World" by Carl Sagan and "Why People Believe Weird Things" by Michael Shermer.

Watching Hibiscusfire and Heathen talk back and forth about why evolution is wrong is like watching two five-year-olds discuss how much gold is at the end of a rainbow. lol

What's involved in this? To tell you the truth it sounds kinda boring to me. Spending a night in a haunted house seems more exciting. I don't know... I guess I've never really connected with or had much interest in Native American culture. I view it just the same as any witch doctor shamanism.
I'm sure my girlfriend is going to love this... "You're doing what for the weekend?" (rolls eyes)

Why would location and moment of birth have ANYTHING to do with someone's personality? Exhaustive studies have been done on this and there is absolutely zero correlation. Yes, it is a pseudoscience. :)

Brenda,
The fact that you believe your personality traits have anything to do with your zodiac sign leads me to believe that you may not be the most objective observer. :)
I mean, really... Astrology? Now this is just too much. At least Astrology has been empirically disproven... many times.

Randomness is not necessary for evolution
by seattleniceguy incontinuing this theme of evolution and randomness that has been going on this week, i wanted to address a common pitful for the would-be evolutionary student.
often, a person will remark, "i see how the theory works, but i just can't believe it all came about by chance.
" if you're such a person, you'll be happy to know that evolution does not require chance at all.

Awesome, TS. I don't have a cluster, but I do use Linux. :) I'll check it out.

LT,
I would have absolutely no problem doing something like that. In fact I'm fascinated by the subject and I think it would be awesome if something paranormal really did happen. But I'm not going to get my hopes up!
Seeing how common this boogieman stuff is I *should* be running into ghosts everywhere I turn. Hell, I live in San Francisco... a city devastated by earthquake and fire at the turn of the century. There should be tons of ghosts in this building I live in.
But nothing. What am I doing wrong?
I would love to spend the night in a haunted house. Hell, I'd do it without payment, but I'll happily take the $1,000.00 too!

I would be amazed too... but why do you believe this has anything to do with the supernatural? The brain is a mighty powerful organ.

I used to run Tierra... are there some newer/better evolution simulation programs out there now? I always found it amazing how a simple algorithm and some random input can create programs so complex that humans cannot even decypher, yet reproduce and form "strategies" for survival.
