  Shunning non-JWs and shunning in general

  often the topic of shunning comes up on this forum, how bad it is, unloving, etc.. my question is this.

  even if you think disfellowshipping is bad, have you ever cut off ties and/or avoided anyone?

  maybe not to the level of jws, but do you just try to avoid talking to some people or try to be in another part of the room at social events?

  It's kind of humorous, but I have more or less "shunned" someone because of their inexcusable behavior. Oddly enough he was an ex-JW.

  Corporate moved him to our office, and when I found out he was an ex-JW I was ecstatic, hoping to have an ear to bend when the mood struck me. He even moved into my apartment complex.

  Then I found out that he was a thief, a gross liar, a braggart, and a two-faced narcissistic a-hole. He threw everyone, including me, under the bus more than once, undermined our relationships with clients, and supported a drug-addicted girlfriend by stealing from petty cash. I wanted nothing to do with him, a sentiment shared by almost everyone else in the office.

  We ganged up on him, presented our complaints to Corporate, and they shipped him back to HQ.

  Why does the Society allow women to speak in the congregations?

  i know this sounds sexist, but you know what?

  the bible is sexist.. in order to establish that birthdays cannot be celebrated, the society references two obscure passages that mentions someone getting killed at a birthday celebration.

  however, nowhere in the scriptures does it say that birthdays are wrong.. but then, when the bible is very clear about something such as this:.

  I used to ask that question too. The TMS was started to teach brothers how to speak so they could give public talks. They added sisters later on, and they have to give a demonstration rather than stand at a podium and teach the congregation.

  Giving comments - it always seemed to me that the scriptures were pretty clear that women shouldn't be making comments during a meeting, but I agree with the cherrypicking comment. It's Bible verse a la carte.

  Not that I agreed with the suppression of women's voices. My ex-husband used to let me speak quite freely at home and he considered himself a radical thinker in regards to women's place in the congregation. LOL!

  Fire Tower Example in latest WT

  so the latest wt has a box about the witnesses and false predictions.

  there is an example of a watchman in a fire tower who sees a wisp of smoke on the horizon which turns out to ba false alarm yet his alertness could later save lives.. the difference is that the wt is not just highlighting a wisp of smoke.

  they are predictingwhen the fire will arrive on the basis of prophecy and setting expectations of imminent fulfilment.

  Hey, where there's smoke there's fire. Reporting a wisp of smoke isn't the same as making a prediction that causes people to dramatically alter their lives and make foolish decisions, like that 1975 debacle did.

  I wouldn't put it past them to use a cover like that. Seems like there was one back in the early 80s that was pretty gosh-darn terrifying - something about the destruction of false religion with churches getting zapped and stuff like that.

  Most of us slid that one inside the Awake and presented something more peaceful to the householders, but one brother loved the cover and shoved it in people's faces with glee. I tried to avoid being in his car group.

  Don't you know that Halloween is really the occasion for the demons to mourn their offspring (the Nephilim) who died in the flood?

  I remember this, but I can't find a reference to it. Anyone recall the reasoning behind this conclusion?

  Did you ever shun people when you were a dub? How did it feel?

  okay, i don't know lots of people that were df'd, but of all the times i've encountered df people when i was a dub, they actually blanked me!

  it was always something that i had fixed in my mind that the jws had dead wrong, even when i was an uber dub.

  i remember several times when i used to arrive late at meetings, and i'd make a point of getting eye contact with the poor dub at the back sitting on the naughty step.

  I did it, feeling a sense of duty and loyalty to the organization/Big J. My best friend was DF'd but luckily I never ran into her and didn't have to shun her.

  Then I started rebelling on my own and I invited her over for chats on a weekly basis. Up yours, WTBTS!
