Urban legend? Or did this really happen when they renovated The Towers?
by cobaltcupcake inmy ex-husband was in bethel when the society bought and started renovating the towers hotel in brooklyn.
my family stayed there when the society was renting a few floors - the place was beyond flea-bag - and people actually lived there.
once the society took possession of the building they started renovating, and of course the residents had to be evicted.

Sometimes sorry isn't enough...
by cedars ini thought you might like to see a rare example of the society saying the actual word "sorry" in the literature.. in 1992 someone wrote in to the awake!
and their comment was published in the july 8th edition in the "from our readers" section, page 30.. their comment read as follows.... "your suggestion that sex education be considered a 'family secret' could accidentally result in great difficulty for some of your readers.
social workers, teachers, nurses, and other professionals are now trained to watch for signs of child abuse.

I don't think the elite GB would care to rub shoulders with the unwashed "Other Sheep" masses.

Planning exit, alternative venues to preach?
by Goodstein inbackground:.
i've come to the conclusion that many doctrines of the wts are unscriptural after many years of privately disagreeing with some of them but feeling that the society was "mostly right" and still being used by jehovah.
this turning point has happened in the last year or so.

Pioneering - the best job in the world!
by MMXIV inhow often did i hear those words at circuit or district assemblies - that pioneering was the best job in the world?
how often did i hear a fake job advert for pioneering where there was 100% job satisfaction working for the most powerful person in the universe and you'd get to travel the world and live forever.... i've done both jobs and would say that the job advert should more honestly read like this:.
secular job.

I tried pioneering a couple of times. It was soul-crushing.

Our visit was in 1973. Our room was on the 4th floor, so we pressed the button for the elevator. A group of weary Bethelites was standing in front of it, and one of them groaned, "It's stuck again." We walked up the 4 flights.
Oh, and do you remember the weird painting on the wall - "Towers - First Hotel on the Moon." It depicted a tall building on the moon.

Jehovah's Witnesses and Divorce
by Eustace ini really hate divorce.
it was my parents getting divorced that helped messed up my childhood.. part of why i came to conclude the jehovah's witnesses don't have the "spiritual paradise" they claim to is how many of their marriages end up in divorce.my parents i could dismiss as an exception to a general rule, but i could never understand how often it seemed to keep happening to lots of different people when the watchtower society teaches that divorce is wrong except in case of adultery.. but what really brought things home for me was this study by the pewforum on religion survey showing that even though jehovah's witness are less likely to be married than the general population, they're more likely to be divorced or separated.. http://religions.pewforum.org/.
they really have a nerve telling people in the jehovah's witnesses religion that they shouldn't have sex outside of marriage when they've done so little to protect jws who get married, and their children, from the extreme stress and conflict of divorce.. it's really messed up.. heck, even the catholics they're are always dumping on have a lower divorce/separation rate than the jws.. jw divorced/separated = 14%.

Other religions have people that counsel marriages in danger . No such thing in the witnesses , elders are worse than
worthless .
That's fer darn sure! My ex-FIL counseled a couple who had conflicting sex drives (he wanted it all the time and she didn't) by telling the husband, "That's what she's there for - use her!"

Once the Society took possession of the building they started renovating, and of course the residents had to be evicted. Some of the residents refused to leave, but a funny thing kept happening.
A Bethelite would go around posting eviction notices on doors and notice a funny smell coming from a room of a recalcitrant resident. They'd get someone to open the door, and the person would be dead. This happened often enough to become legendary. Of course, the JWs took it to mean that Big J was smiting those who stood in the way of the WTBTS.
Does anyone remember this?

Weird "new world" artwork from the 2013 calendar
by cedars inmy mother-in-law has a strange obsession with calendars, and orders the society's calendar each year.
this year's calendar is especially weird.
it features images depicting future events - in particular, the society's vision of the new world order.. i've taken the opportunity to scan some of the images for you all to check out.. please note - there are captions for each of the images, but i don't have the english language version of the calendar so i'd rather just quote the scripture used so as not to reveal which country i'm in.. .

Cedars - Love the Flash Gordon imagery!
I think the perspective is off on some of those pics. And why is the surf so different for the children and waders than it is for the surfer? Nobody would be wading like that or placidly swimming underwater if the surf was suitable for surfing.
