After leaving the WTS have you been left with a phobia about being happy?
by Xanthippe inafter reading flipper's thread about steve hassan's latest book it got me thinking about the stuff on phobias he mentions.
apparently cults deliberately instill phobias in you to cut you off from the real world.. we were constantly being told if we were struggling it showed we were doing everything right because the devil only persecutes those that are doing well.
if i ever said to anyone i am thinking of taking up a hobby or doing some exercise or (very rarely) planning a holiday they were instantly critical.

I never thought about it this way before, but there's emotional trauma involved in the JW indoctrination, certainly spiritual trauma. Maybe that's why so many of us are anxiety prone and phobic.

WT Study Article for 12/9/2012
by RagingBull incannot wait to hear comments on this article "what kind of spirit do you show?".
under the subtitle "avoid the world's spirit", after mentioning the accounts of korah, abiram and dathan (complaining agains moses)..paragraph 6 states .... "some in the first century also became critical of those entrusted with authority in the congregation, "disregarding lordship.
" (jude 8) these men likely were dissatisfied with their privileges and tried to influence others against appointed men who were conscientiously carrying out god-given duties.

Did you ever have to walk out of/shut off a movie when watching with JWs?
by keyser soze ini can only recall one occasion.
it was when my brother and future wife were dating.
they had dinner at my parents' house, along with her uber-zealous/borderline psychotic parents.

My ex and I were out with friends at an art house movie, "The Man Who Fell to Earth" with David Bowie. We could see it leading up to a *gasp* homosexual love scene, so we got up and left.
I remember my ex and I skulking off to a distant theater to see "A Christmas Story" in 1983. I loved Jean Shepherd and couldn't resist.

Pronouncing it RIGHT
by Christ Alone inwhat rules do you follow when pronouncing foreign names/places/things?
i was remembering that when we were studying the daniel book for the book study back in the day, someone released a pronunciation guide.
i remember studying it closely so i could pronounce all the names right (especially on the section of daniel 11).

There was a Ministry School Overseer in my hall who spent 10 minutes counseling someone about their "pro-noun-ciation." I had to get up and leave or I was going to shriek with laughter.

Milan Italy Public Demonstration against ostracism practiced by the Watchtower.
by Nick! inmilan italy public demonstration against ostracism practiced by the watchtower.. .
two years after rome, yesterday december 1st, day by day, we were about 100 of us demonstrating on a public square in the center of milan, italy.. .
at about 10-11 a.m. many of us were already on the spot, installing our gazebo on the public square where we were granted authorization by the police and starting the distribution of about 4000 tracts to passersby in the surrounding squares, boulevards and streets exposing the watchtower for its teachings and instructions on discriminating those who decide to use their rights to walk away from this religious movement without to have to incur the ostracism imposed by the leadership.

Well done!!
It truly is evil to tear families apart. I'm being shunned by my mother and brother. I have to keep checking the SSI "death list" for her name to make sure she's still alive.
Of course, they'd say that's my choice, but my choice is not to be a JW. It's their choice to shun me.

Will the year 2034 be the end? Is the WT seeing a glimpse of "NEW LIGHT"?
by suavojr incedar mentioned this on another thread talking about 2014 and the wt.
ray also mentioned how easily it would be for the wt to apply the 1 day for a year rule and make 2034 a special year.. .
they already have a contingency plan enshrined in their literature that will see them through to 2034.. http://www.quotes-watchtower.co.uk/2034.html.

1973 International Assembly in Montreal. Open stadium. Huge thunderstorm with high winds that started tearing the platform apart. The speaker had to go down underneath the platform to finish his talk. Everyone in the stands is cowering underneath plastic sheets (we weren't supposed to use umbrellas).
1974 district convention was at a racetrack in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Most of the seating was indoors but the stage was outside. One afternoon session was entirely devoted to a drama about the life of the Apostle Paul - 3 hours long. As the afternoon progressed we could see black clouds building in the distance and lightning flashing. Just as the drama concluded the skies opened and thunder roared. The closing song and prayer were pretty much drowned out. Most everyone had to wait at least a half hour before we could leave the place.
During that drama there was one scene where a snake bites someone. The "snake" was on a wire stretched from one side of the stage to the other. It malfunctioned, so someone reached out from behind a potted plant and grabbed the snake. It was hilarious.
