I was shocked by those videos.
Honestly, I don't doubt that the WT would do all of those things to protect itself. They haven't been that way from the beginning. I suspect it's been a gradual descent into corruption.
It's probably a matter of protecting Jehovah's Organization - you'll lay down your life for it, so it's no big deal to do a little surveillance of a "dangerous apostate" for the brothers.
I watched an interesting program about two Scientologists who rose to a high level in that organization but decided to leave. They suffered a lot of similar harassment - obvious tails, for example.
My ex-husband was a Bethelite back in the early-mid 1970s, and I remember him telling me that the place was run more like a corporation than a religious organization. They disregarded scriptural principles left and right, most notably brotherly love. It's easy to see how easily they could get from there to the point they are now.
The Governing Body have fallen out of "the truth."

Krispy Kremes are only good when they're hot and fresh.
My local Dunkin has a kitchen in the back, but maybe that's only for their sandwiches. Whatever happened to Fred? "Time to make the donuts!"

Can't go. Don't own a dress.
Or - since I'm 1000 miles away from any JW who knows me, I could attend at the local KH wearing my jeans so they'll all think I'm just a harmless newly interested one.
Then I'll pull out my worn deluxe NWT that has my name embossed on the cover, look up all the scriptures as fast as they do, partake of the emblems, and freak 'em all out. That might prove to be quite amusing for me.

You're right - only JWs would be so rude. We used to do it all the time while out in FS - pop in on someone and ask to use their bathroom. During months when I wasn't aux pioneering I would always make sure my bathroom was clean before 10:30 a.m, just in case.

Mahony was out of town but issued a statement Monday apologizing for his mistakes and saying he had been “naive” about the lasting impacts of abuse. He has since met with 90 abuse victims privately and keeps an index card with each victim’s name in his private chapel, where he prays for them daily, he said. The card also includes the name of the molesting priest “lest I forget that real priests created this appalling harm.”
Can you imagine a member of the GB expressing this kind of contrition? I would pay to see that!

There used to be an actual advantage to signing up to pioneer or temporary pioneer. The literature was cheaper for pioneers. I can't remember how much cheaper the books were, but magazines (which were sold to the public for 5 cents each) cost 4 cents for publishers and something like 2 cents for pioneers.
When my ex and I left the pioneer service we received a letter from the Society asking us to count up the books and magazines we had left over from our pioneer service and pony up the difference between the pio and pub rate. They said we could just pop it into the contribution box. We never did.
