False prophets or simply wrong expectations?
by leaving_quietly inin a talk i heard recently, the brother was talking about how jws had certain expectations about the end, acknowledging 1914, 1925, surely before 1935 and 1975, then we learned that it's not in our jurisdiction to know jehovah's timetable.
then he said, some say that because we made those mistakes, some say jws are false prophets.
he said that was "simplistic thinking".

Great thoughts leaving_quietly!
Next time anyone hears this bullshit, pull out 'The Finished Mysery' and read it aloud. I guarantee you everyone in the building will be storming out with their chairs with fingers in their ears. Every false prophet had wrong expectations and after such expectations guess what happened? They were stoned according to Deut. 18: 20-22. They will then have to say Harold Camping (who they call out in their magazines) had wrong expectations too, because he did the very thing they did in 1914, 1918, 1925, 1975.

So...why is taking blood essentially viewed as unforgivable by the WT?
by sd-7 inbeen hearing about this 'grey's anatomy' episode, and while i didn't see it, it brought up a question i wanted to throw out there, albeit a long-winded one, as is my usual nature.. the fact that people would rather die than take blood, as if...if they take it, they're doomed for sure to not make the new system--it doesn't make sense to me.
people both in the organization and the bible stories are forgiven for heinous crimes, murder, adultery, child sacrifice, everything up to and including denying jesus altogether.
(let's not forget child molestation and rape, apparently...) so why does it seem like this one act is presented to jws as one that's never to be forgiven?.

what separates it from lying, fornication, stealing, adultery, drunkeness, etc? -- Nothing

How long did you keep rooting for Walter White?
by slimboyfat inisn't this guy like the greatest anti-hero of all time?.
as the series wears on it is getting more and more difficult to sympathise with the guy.
but i must admit i stuck with him pretty far.

SPOILER ALERT: After the kid on the bike got shot he lost my sympathy. Especially after the Mike incident, I loved Mike!
I find myself having a lot of parallels with the psychology of the story. Living a double life as an "apostate" among my JW friends and Walt's double life with his DEA brother-in-law haha. Fake it till you make it.

Markan priority and the synoptic gospels
by 88JM inthis might be a question for leolaia, but i noticed in researching the gospel of mark this week that the dates the wtbts gives for the writing of the other synoptic gospels does not seem to agree with most new testament scholars.. the all scripture book gives the following dates:.
matthew: writing completed: c. 41 c.e.mark: writing completed: c. 6065 c.e.luke: writing completed: c. 5658 c.e.this would put mark as the last of the three synoptic gospels to be written, and therefore the wtbts does not adhere to the markan priority hypothesis.. wikipedia states that: "the theory of markan priority is today accepted by the majority of new testament scholars".. .
is there a good reason why the wtbts dates the synoptic gospels in that order?how can they date matthew and luke so early?is it merely because the wtbts rejects the possibility of a "q" source, and possibly even the idea of collusion between the writers altogether?or is it because many scholars put the writings of luke and matthew after the destruction of jerusalem, meaning the "prophecies" of destruction became historical accounts of past events by the time they were written?

mP,
Robert M Price has lost a lot of credibility with his mythiscism amongst scholars. He is a minority in the academic world with his radical theories. I have read some of his work and heard his debates but if you ever get a chance, there's a radio show called 'Unbelievable' where Ehrman absolutely destroys Price's arguments relating to the historical Jesus.
Also, the verses transhuman68 just quoted are all before the end of Mark 16:8. Of course everything after those verses were added.

Mentally diseased translation in NWT.
by newdawnfades inperhaps this has been discussed before.
1 tim 6:4. nwt .
4 he is puffed up [with pride], not understanding anything, but being mentally diseased over questionings and debates about words.

Too bad Paul didn't write 1st or 2nd Timothy. The author (possibly Polycarp) of those pastoral epistles was actually mentally diseased with putting women down, establishing heirarchy, and many other idea's which were not Pauline.
So forget about translation bias and just throw the whole thing out the window.

Latest KM says we need to being willing to sacrifice our life like Jonah did!!!
by life is to short inin case any of you wondered why those two poor women who were attacked by the pit bull and probably ignored warning signs of a dag being in the yard and posted signs went to the door anyway.. here it is from the latest april 2013 km front page titled "take as a pattern the prophets-jonah".
paragraph #3 "when jonah realized that his bad decision had jeopardized the lives of the mariners, he was willing to sacrifice his life.
(jonah 1:3, 4, 12) later, when fulfilling his commission in nineveh, he walked deep into the heart of the city, perhaps looking for a suitable location to proclaim the judgment of jehovah.

Watchtower Dishonesty
by Vanderhoven7 injust re-discovered this gem:.
"it is a matter of fact that the history of the watchtower society is riddled with failed date-setting and abandoned doctrine,1 and the society has gone to great lengths to hide this past from its members.
older (incriminating) watchtower publications are virtually impossible to obtain through the society,2 while at the same time members are overwhelmed with "current" watchtower material.. the watchtower society has even gone as far as to publish disinformation about its own history in an attempt to convince readers that watchtower doctrine has remained consistent over the years, and that the society is not a false prophet.

Julia Orwell, Amazon and eBay are your friends in this matter :)
I bought several books from both places to confirm several quotes and check their context.
