Ronald L. Lawson Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Queens College, CUNY – Papers on Seventh-day Adventism, with some comparisons with Mormons and Witnesses
9 January 2019
A question that continues to draw research in the sociology of religion is what factors spur the growth of religions (Kelley 1972; Iannaccone 1994; Bruce 2002; Hoge and Roozen 1979; Stark and Finke 2000). In line with with these previous studies, this article examines three well-known Protestant/Other religions that share many characteristics (supply-side factors): Mormonism, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Seventh-day Adventists. Data on the memberships of these three religions was gathered from 1960 through 2006 for almost every country around the world where they have a presence. Growth rates for those countries were analyzed while controlling for country-level characteristics (demand-side factors). The results of this analysis indicate that both supply- and demand-side factors are important in determining growth. The strongest predictors of growth are: organizational momentum in a country, the level of economic development, and several country-level characteristics.

Hilarious article on Sentinelese in today's Guardian
by LoveUniHateExams ini say 'hilarious' because it shows the guardian's ridiculous bias.. this article is dripping with noble savage hippy-ness.. nearly all contact with outsiders have been violent.. here's an excerpt about one of the two 1991 visits that were non-violent: “they are a peace-loving people,” tn pandit, an anthropologist who conducted one of the first successful meetings with the tribe in 1991, told an indian news outlet this week.. and here's what wikipedia has to say about it: 'on later visits, pandit's boats were confronted by sentinelese who turned their backs, which pandit took as a sign their visit was not welcome; but they were able to leave gifts, which islanders came to take.
he observed that the men carried bows and arrows, but the women did not.
on one visit in 1991 the islanders took coconuts from the hands of pandit's party, but would not allow them to enter the island'.

Simon: The big threat to the Sentinelese is likely disease and viruses - if they have been so isolated some numpty showing up for a photo op could decimate them.
JW preacher: But the Good News MUST be preached to all the inhabited earth and THEN the end will come.
And just like that some numpty JW missionary spread disease and pestilence among the Sentinelese and they perished with a Watchtower magazine on the end of their spear.
JW preacher: See, proof we are living in the Last Days. Jesus foretold there would be pestilence in one place after another. Who else on earth today is fulfilling Bible prophecy?
And just like that some numpty JW preacher died from blood loss in hospital after refusing a blood transfusion following being pierced in the side by a Sentinelese spear.
And there was silence.

“the jehovah’s witness religion i grew up in made me feel immense pressure to maintain my virginity.
i dreaded the prospect of being trapped by a lifelong commitment to a husband in a community that would dictate what we did in the bedroom and i started to realise that i did not belong because i didn’t want to be married or have children in that stifling community.” – ella, victoria, australia.

Shining a light on Reproductive Coercion White Paper
“The Jehovah’s Witness religion I grew up in made me feel immense pressure to maintain my virginity. I dreaded the prospect of being trapped by a lifelong commitment to a husband in a community that would dictate what we did in the bedroom and I started to realise that I did not belong because I didn’t want to be married or have children in that stifling community.” – Ella, Victoria, Australia
Reproductive Coercion is a hidden form of violence and control that can have life altering consequences.
Reproductive coercion is behaviour that deliberately prevents a person from making decisions about their reproductive health. It includes:
- contraceptive sabotage including “stealthing”
- Pressuring another person into pregnancy
- Forcing a person to have an abortion or continue a pregnancy
- Forcing a person into sterilisation.
When recalling her experience of life in a high control Jehovah’s Witness community, Ella highlighted that women in particular not only experience reproductive coercion driven by the culture of the community*, there are also economic drivers that perpetuate and compound reproductive coercion. Ella outlined that decisions of when to start and end reproduction rests with the typically male provider as the woman is expected to be silent or “in subjection”. Ella describes how lack of income, coupled with lack of control over one’s own body results in fear, obligation and guilt and increases reliance on the public health system. In her recovery, she needed psychological counselling, visits to specialist physiotherapists to relax her shallow breathing and to women’s hospitals for a vulva disorder caused by hyper-contraction.
Ella’s full story as a female raised within the Jehovah’s Witnesses is found on pages 49-51 of the White Paper. See link below:
