The transformation into cult religion: Jehovah's Witness empire in 15 steps
by Terry inthere are only 15 steps from a widely scattered readership of 2nd adventist speculations published by pastor russell into a world wide monolithic control cult.. it reads like a machievellian discourse of absolute power:.
1. nine years after the death of pastor russell his publishing company was being operated by an editorial committee which would review articles pre-publication for the watchtower society.. in 1925 the president of this society (rutherford) offered up an article of extreme controversy.
it was titled the birth of the nation.

(unfortunately, due to the soundtrack i've chosen, this video is apparently banned in germany.

I was one of those who got scared into getting baptised young. My parents told me that getting baptised was the ticket I needed for paradise. I did not feel ready and was afraid of getting disfellowshipped because I had seen how harsh shunning was. Not that I was a troublemaker, but you just never know what could happen in the future.

Why choose the Bible?
What would you have chosen if your Mom wore a burkha?
BlackSheep: I've read that before here when I was lurking, and it really made me think. That and thousands of religions that all claim to be true.

The mind's a powerful thing (placebo effect). I read somewhere a long time ago that praying and/or faith healing work (if they work) because they alleviate stress. I still don't know why she would lose her "power", but maybe it has to do with her burning the books and anything associated with it? I wanted to start a new thread asking people if they believed in demons and why. Is it a good idea? I know WTWizard is a Satanist so he must believe in demons, but why if he doesn't believe in the Bible? I've only been here for a short while so I'm not well informed.
itsibitsybrainbutbigenoughtosmellarat : I will check your link out later. Thanks.

It's a shame that I have to stay in it for a bit longer, if I want to have a house to live in.

Sorry guys I just don't know, I still believe in the supernatural because I can't explain thingsāa lot of things. If demons are real then there must be a God. At this point I'm not agnostic but deist. I'm young and have yet to finish reading the Bible, but it seems to be taking forever because I'm doing it slowly. I have to give it a chance and hear what it has to say. I don't expext to understand it after reading it one time. Thousands of years have passed and I don't think anyone understands it completely.

I know a couple of elders who have never read the Bible entirely. At least they were honest and admitted it to me. Preparing for the Bible Highlights?! It's not like you can read the assigned chapters and share your interpretation. It has to be an interpretation given by the WT before. Do you remember seeing brothers with their spiral-bound TMS "answers"?

In pp. 12-15 there is an auto-biography about a former Pentecostal evangelist who said she had the power to heal. I've never understood this. Are healing powers real? Why do JWs have a lot of stories about people studying and then losing their "gifts"?

Anyone have a Kindle or a Nook?
by Simon ini really don't like the ipad (or apple) but i think an ebook reader would be nice.
nothing made by sony though .... the amazon kindle and barnes & noble nook look to be the best (esp.
with the recent price reductions) but i'd like any insight from anyone who has one.

I have a Nook Simple Touch and it is awesome. Very user friendly. It doesn't render .pdfs nicely and you can't do anything else but read so distractions are limited. There are lots of free public domain books out there for you to download, and Barnes & Nobel has Free Fridays where it promotes an ebook picked by them and makes it free for a limited time. The new Nook Simple Touch has a built-in light for reading in the dark.
