New World Translation Assaults on Language and Phrases that Always Wigged Me Out!

i listened to the august 4th episode of the healingxjws podcast where they interviewed a former jw circuit overseer.

he shared many great examples of how original meanings (especially poetry) were lost in this terrible translation.

it's worth listening to.

I mean, it often reads as if it was composed by someone who speaks English as a second language. When I was a JW it was often frustrating reading the NWT because I had no idea what I was reading, the sentence wouldn't make sense, or I couldn't follow the thread of the argument or narrative. Yet when I tried to read the Bible in most other translations, I wouldn't have this problem in comprehension. And even if there wasn't a problem in comprehension, the language in the NWT often is just godawful. (imo of course)

Leolaia- I'm glad I wasn't the only JW who thought the same. I tried talking about this with a brother once and he felt offended after I told him I understood other translations better. He told me the NWT was the best and most accurate Bible. I strongly disagreed but didn't say anything back. I feel so relieved that I can now speak my mind with others freely.

well this afternoon as i sit here i am calm but my heart is literally aching.

i am sitting here with my young daughter on my shoulder.

i guess you could say i spilled the beans to my wife this afternoon.

The Resurrection - Gender-less Humans or Spirit Beings?

why did the angels abandon their position in heaven and take on men's bodies after looking at attractive human women? Were none of these angels attracted to men on earth? Personally I think it's all just hetrosexually biased Biblical twaddel.

WTF?? Why didn't I notice this? Good observation. Seriously, why did we force ourselves to believe all this?? To those who still believe in the Bible and read it every day, how do you explain all this?

canada bethel laying off ppl in shipping

so when the mags for north america + carribbean were to be printed in canada, canada bethel (aka georgetown) sent out notices to all disctrict conventions in 2008 that they need lots of help.

i think the bethel family increased to over 400 with at least 50 new guys just for shipping.. however, now that the mags are only 16 pages, lots of those new guys are being layed off.

the double shift (6-2,2-11) is now being combined into one shift (8-4/5 i guess).

ohiocowboy- Your advice is excellent!!! I will definitely ask for mark downs. Your chicken breasts in a pan with a can of cream of mushroom recipe also sounds very good and delicious. And the pizza with enless topping possiblites? Wow, another thing to look forward to when I'm on my own. You are right, the possibilities are endless. Reading your post made me hungry.

finally awake- So far I only know how to boil eggs. lol

jam- Are you teaching your boys how to cook in case their wives don't know how to either? Thank you for the stew idea. Another thing I look forward to trying when I move out.

Imallcool- I love Kashi Cinammon cereal! It's not super sweet, yet it's not too bland. I buy it because it has no high fructose corn syrup. Same with the granola bars althought they're more expensive.

I hope this thread helps others who are in a similar situation.

Same here. Cereal, oatmeal, cream of wheat, grits, yogurt, bagel with cream cheese, PB&J, and if I'm in a hurry granola bars and an instant breakfast shake. I was mainly worried about the heavy stuff like lunch and dinner. So no one here ate frozen dinners?

we would go to Costco and load up on stuff like frozen chicken breasts, broccoli, potatoes, and a lot of popcorn

mrsjones5- Another good idea!! I'm not fond of popcorn, but buying frozen chicken breasts is a good idea, especially with my new Foreman grill.

Steamed broccoli would take care of my vegetable needs.

A George Foreman Grill? Why didn't I think about that? Doh! Well now I have my protein intake problem solved. I guess it's not that bad after all. Baltar447, good idea on not using the whole flavor packet. I've been trying to convince my mom into letting me move out to be closer to school and she keeps telling me that I wouldn't make it. I already learned how to iron and I wash my own clothes by myself, and I just solved my eating dilemma. What else does she think I need??
