Dear god, why do we have to be unreasonably gullible in order to believe in your existence? And when's the next edition of your book coming out? It's been outdated for millennia.

let's play Dear God
by Tater-T indear god, if you are a god as your followers claim you to be, why do you have to operate in the constraints of spacetime?
dear god, why did you have to sacrifice yourself to yourself to save your creation that you made with flaws?.
dear god, why do you not do anything about your old men in robes raping little boys?

How many went from christian to something else?
by Satanus ini noticed some posters who used to argue along christian lines, but don't do so, anymore.
granted, it's a tough line to keep to on this forum.
i would be interested to hear (read) of people who came here as believers, and then transitioned to unbeliever, and the reasons for that.

I went from born-in JW to deist, and now I'm agnostic. I started reading the bible by itself without any publications, and I stopped believing in it halfway through the OT. I couldn't wrap my mind around all the violence, genocide, and bloodshed. It broke my heart when I read that peoples were killed just because they didn't worship Yahweh, not to mention the account of the concubine who was raped and cut into 12 pieces. The [warrior] god of the bible doesn't deserve my worship or praise.
When I would read the bible I would compare verses with another translation if I had trouble understanding how the NWT read, and that usually helped me understand better. That's how I found bible.cc and loved how I could compare multiple translations at once, unlike biblegateway.com. I also noticed there were some commentaries at the bottom. I read those at well because I wanted to know what "Christendom" taught, and how it was different from my JW beliefs. I was amazed at how much more sense (e.g., "other sheep" in John 10:16 meaning Gentiles) they made than WT literature. I mainly did this because I didn't want to be caught off guard if a householder used a different translation.

Need help in identifying a Bible translation
by Caminante ini'm working on transcribing the full 3 hour recording of ray franz's visit in romania of over five years ago and i realize he quotes from a pretty unfamiliar bible translation.
well, it's unfamiliar to me--it might not be for you though--and i don't seem to find it anywhere online.
as a clue, i have the verses from 1 peter 4:8-10. they read as follows: "above all, let your love for one another be constant, for love covers a multitude of sins.

JWs say it's my fault I didn't go to university ?!
by ekruks inlike many on here, as a jw trying hard to follow the direction of the gb, i listened to the advice to pioneer and trust in jehovah to provide (mat6.33) instead of going to university.
after struggling for ages in low-paid physically-demanding jobs, i decided to become a student (thanks for the encouragement on here guys!).
i tell a jw i wish i had been to university when i was a teenager, and put all that pioneer time into studying hard for a good grade, get a good job, and if i had wound up tired as i am now, at least i would have been paying into a mortgage on a home and pension.

Ekruks, I forgot to add this in my first reply, but I know what you mean. I have asked older JWs that lived through the 1975 fiasco if they remember anything, and it's as if nothing happened. How does someone forget their past?!
Billy- Yeah, that's what keeps me going so far. Only a year and a half left to finish my bachelor...
problemaddict- I think it's this one: http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/bible/223283/1/BOE-March-6-2012
jgnat- Thank you for that comeback. I'll be using it now lol

The few JWs in my Hall going to college are also pioneering (except me!). I guess they're doing it so they won't get reproached (or "lose their spirituality"), and even then I'm the only one going to a four-year college (because two years is a long time?!).
I'm told it's a waste of time and that it's like painting a boat that's about to sink. And if I try to encourage young JWs to go to college, I get rebuked. I could lose my "privileges", so says the BOE letter. Not that I care, but my stepdad is an elder.

does anybody have a graph of the numbers of newbies who have joined in say the last 5 years ?.

I'm in, and having a hard time biting my tongue sometimes
by noonehome ini spend allot of time with other young witnesses my age, and am very close to a few of these friends.
my question is, is there any way to safely talk about doubts?
for instance, i've been learning allot about evolution and the science behind the flood (or lack thereof).

I can't contain myself sometimes. The other day my non-JW grandma and my sister were talking, when my sister asked her what happened to a girl she knew that was studying with the JWs. My grandma said she quit when she was told or heard that only JWs would survive Armageddon and that her family would not make it. She couldn't contemplate 'everlasting life' without her family. My sister right away 'apologised' and told her that that's not true, and that she probably misunderstood or that the brother lied. I had a WTF!? expression on my face and snapped. I asked my sister why she was lying and didn't know what she believed in (she doesn't, like most JWs). I then looked up the most recent Watchtower that said that only JWs will survive and showed it to her in private later on. Her face turned red when she read it and realised she was wrong, and she then asked me why I was 'against Jehovah'. She accused me of being an apostate. I was dumbfounded. All I did was show her a recent Watchtower (not 'old light')!
"But Jehovah's servants already belong to the only organization that will survive the end of this wicked system of things." Watchtower 2007 Dec 15 p.14
I believe Moshe is right. The only way you can safely discuss doubts is if you're ready to be financially independent. Are you currently going to school or working? I'm also your age if you need someone to talk to.
